Funeral services for Hazel A. Oates, age 83, of Conroe, Texas
were held 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at the Stewart Memorial United
Methodist Church in Buffalo, Texas. Rev. Kevin Gilmore officiated and burial was
in the Buffalo City Cemetery. Walters Buffalo Funeral Home was in charge of all
arrangements.
Hazel A. Oates was born on July 31, 1925 in Leon County, Texas to Calvin and
Hattie (Vann) Vestal. She was raised in Buffalo, Texas, but had lived in Conroe
for the past four years coming from Willis, Texas. She married Bill Oates in
1958, and he passed away in 1993. She was a beautician/operator in a beauty shop
in Spring & Willis. She started painting using oils at the age of fifty five.
She loved to paint landscapes, seascapes and homes. She painted up until two
months ago. She was a fun loving, very caring person; loved her family, and she
loved her grandchildren. Mrs. Oates was preceded in death by her parents and her
husband, Bill Oates. Mrs. Oates passed away in a Conroe Healthcare Center on
March 8, 2009.
She is survived by her son John Oates of Galveston, Texas; her daughter, Sue
Wunsch of Conroe, Texas; three grandchildren, Jeanette Brand and husband,
Michael of Houston, Texas, Stacy Tenant and husband, Russell of Willis, Texas,
and David Wunsch and wife,Cassy, presently residing in Canada; two great
grandchildren, John Michael Brand, Brittany Lynn Brand, and another great
grandchild expected to arrive in April.
The pallbearers were Russell Tenant, Jason McLaren, Chris Rienhardt, Wayne
Wunsch, Michael Brand, and Rick Westcott.
