McCoy Cemetery
Original survey made by Mrs. Florence Reed
There have been three cemeteries established in the vicinity of Coolidge,Texas. The first was the Oak Hill, sometimes known as the McCoy Cemetery. It is of historical interest as the land on which the plot rests was a portion of a grant donated to one William McCoy for his service in the battle of San Jacinto.
William McCoy was born June 11, 1808 in Tennessee. He came to Texas as a boy and spent many years fighting the Indians and Mexicans. He was a close friend of Sam Houston and was an active participant in the battle of San Jacinto, after which he spent many years as a farmer in Limestone Co. He died May 8, 1866, was buried in the Woods Cemetery near Tehuacana. This cemetery has been abandoned and many markers are lost.
On July 2, 1836, he married Martha Jones, who was born near Norfolk, Virginia, on September 18, 1818. They had nine children and she was buried at Gainsville. One of the children, Carolina Virginia, was married to J. W. Askew and remained in Limestone County. She donated the land for the Oak Hill Cemetery.
This cemetery is in a poor state of preservation and some of the graves are not marked except for a rock. The ones that are marked are as follows:
