This cemetery is west of Thornton. Turn west off Highway 14 - just out of
Thornton and follow this black top farm road to the second left turn; turn left
and follow this gravel road approximately 1 1/2 miles, crossing creek bridge, to
sign "Tidwell Cemetery" on farm gate on right; enter pasture and
follow the fence to cyclone fenced cemetery in a grove of trees.
David J. Tidwell, Methodist minister of Winston County, Mississippi 1848 led a
group of related families from his congregation to Limestone County. He
founded the Tidwell Church on his land. Some of the families who came with David
J. Tidwell were Kilpatricks, Hendrix and Mcgees. Some other early
settlers in the Tidwell community were David Barron in 1854, Cain Hogan and W.
A. Kilpatrick in 1855 along with John Chisum and J. R. Chisum.
The earliest date in the cemetery is that on the grave of Nancy Hogan, wife of
J. M. Hogan. She was buried February 5, 1858.
On April 21, 1886, Mary Chisum, widow of J. R. Chisum, anxious to have the
graveyard preserved and protected, gave four acres of her land, known as
Tidwell Cemetery, to the community and citizens of Limestone County, Texas.
