The Vanous Cemetery is north and a little west (northwest) of Ben Hur. To my
knowledge there are only two tombstone markers that are of the Vanous family and
another marker of a man not related to the Vanous family, and according to
family stories and tradition I believe there are several children buried in the
cemetery but there are no markers to indicate the location of the graves or
names of said children. I feel sure one child as a son or daughter of Anna
(Zachas) and Tobias (Tobe) Vanous.
Tobias Vanous and his mother, Katerina Vanous, came to this country in 1887
from Bohemia and settled in Washington County. They lived in the Wesley
Community for several years. Tobe married Anna Zachas from near by Cat Springs
in Austin County and several children were born to this union before the family
moved to the Ben Hur area about 1894. It was around 1905 or 1906 when the Vanous
family moved to the Mart Area.
There were six children born to Anna and Tobe Vanous. one died in infancy. My
daddy, Joseph (Joe), was the oldest and there was Olga, married John E. Barton;
Toby who married Edna Geirth; Mary, who never married, and the youngest John who
married Gertrude Grohoske. Aunt Gertrude is still living and she still lives on
"the "home place" that grandpa Vanous bought when he moved to Mart from Ben Hur.
