Mrs. Florence Vinson Reed, in writing about the Oak Hill or McCoy Cemetery,
reports that William McCoy was born June 11, 1808 in Tennessee. He came to Texas
as a boy and spent many years fighting Indians and Mexicans. He was a close
friend Sam Houston and was an active participant in the battle of San Jacinto,
after which he spent many years as a farmer in Limestone County. He died May 8,
1866, and was buried in the Wood Cemetery, which is located near Tehuacana. This
cemetery has been abandoned and the markers lost. He was married to Martha
Jones, who was born near Norfolk, Va., on Sept. 18, 1828. She was buried at
Gainsville.
