Resources in the Genealogy Department at Richards Memorial Library in Brady include the following:

  • The First Families of Texas (microfilm-5 rolls) which gives the first 4700 families accepted into First Families of Texas.Note: This certificate program is still open to those of you who had ancestors in Texas before she became a state. Contact Ann Shuffler, Librarian, for details on entering your ancestor.
  • Index to the First Families of Texas (book) indexes First Families by ancestor and by submitter.
  • Stacy Cemetery and Smith Ranch Cemetery (book) gives complete inscriptions and location of graves in these two historic McCulloch County Cemeteries. A map of Stacy Cemetery is also on file.
  • A History of the D & O H Ranch of McCulloch and Concho Counties (masters thesis) gives the story of the early open range ranch which covered McCulloch and Concho Counties from the Brady Mountains to the Colorado River during the 1880's and 90's.
  • A file area has been set aside for Family Histories and Local Histories. It is the top drawer in the cabinet just to the left of the computer in the Genealogy Department, and can be easily expanded to two drawers or more, depending on usage. Get your family information together and place it in this vertical file so that other researchers can find it. This is a great way to share what we have found.
  • Old Marriage Licenses - A box of very old marriage licenses that had been stored at the courthouse from 1876 to 1939 has been relocated to the library .  Many have been picked up by family members during the past years but there are still many left.  I've checked on the names for people who have submitted queries,  but if any of you would like to check on a license, please let us know. These old unclaimed licenses are now stored at Richards Memorial Library.  You can see a list of available licenses. A self addressed envelope should be sent to them if you would like a license mailed to you.
