Asa Chappell, who was born in May, 1810 in NC, purchased his first piece of land in MS on 7 Jan 1841. He and Sarah A. Sanders, who was born in Georgia on 23 May, 1818, were married about 1845, and had four children: John D. (1847-1917), Mary Pinnina A.(1848-1932), Joseph M. (1852-1925), and Samuel Asa (1855-1920), born in Lafayette Co, MS. According to the 1860 Census Mortality Schedule, Sarah A. Chappell died of "hemorrage of the womb"[sic], on 23 June 1859. The family story is that an aunt came to live with them to take care of the children. (The 1860 Census lists Lydia Jones, age 18, born in NC in the household.) The Civil War, primarily in the form of Confederate deserters, dealt harshly with the family: stories of hiding valuables away from the house have been handed down. The Union Army did move in and occupy Oxford and environs, and burned the town square in 1864. Also handed down is the story of how Asa Chappell was killed on 14 March 1863: a slave named Wash (who had been jointly owned by Asa and his brother) beheaded Asa with an axe, with some of the children looking on. The slave was caught and lynched by a mob. Supposedly, there was a newspaper clipping of this in the possession of the family for years, until someone decided it was too gruesome and destroyed it.] Asa and Sarah are buried in the Bethel Cemetery, near the Bethel Baptist Church, east of Oxford, in Lafayette Co., MS . Mary P.innina married a neighbor’s son, A. Pinkney Livingston , on 26 Nov 1867. They had twins, Salley and Naute. Apparently, the marriage was not a good one, and there was a separation or divorce. The family home was sold in Nov 1870, with Livingston signing the deed as her husband. The story is handed down of Livingston’s kidnapping one of the twins – the boy, he thought. Soon after, Mary P. and her brothers “took their guns and rescued the baby from Livingston’s mother’s house, where she had been left”. Mary P., her children, and her brothers left Mississippi for Texas, where they settled in Bell Co. in 1871. She met and married Thomas Jackson Rawls in 1872 and they moved to Falls Co. where they farmed , and reportedly, he also taught school. He died suddendly from heat stroke while working in a field. Their youngest child, Mary Tom, was born after his death. Mary P., who was known as Penny (short for Pennina), moved back to Bell Co. to farm and raise her children. One son, Joseph, was shot and killed by a neighbor, and she never believed it to be an accident. She was a staunch Baptist, and a charter member of the Heidenheimer Baptist Church. Mary P. Rawls lived with her son, Charles, and his family in her later years. Her death in 1932 was attributed to "senility", and she is buried in the Reed's Lake Cemetery, along with her son, Joseph, and some of her grandchildren Her older brother, John D. Chappell, was born in MS, served in the CSA, and was married in MS to Susan C. Wilson. He sold out in October 1871, and he and his family moved with some of her family to Los Nietos, Los Angeles Co., California. Four of his children were born there, and his wife, Susan, died there. The family returned to Bell Co. in 1881, and lived there for 11 years. He married twice while in Bell ‘Co. He and his third wife and the remaining family moved to Coleman Co. where they lived in Santa Anna for 25 years. In his old age, he lived in Brownwood, where he died in 1917. He is buried in the Santa Anna Cemetery. Joseph M. Chappell moved to Bell Co. with the rest of the family. He married Tennessee Ater in 1877 in Bell Co., and settled there. They moved to the area that became Roscoe, in Nolan Co., after 1887 and lived out their lives there. In 1925, Joe had gone to visit his son in Dallas and to attend the State Fair, when he died of "acute indigestion". He and Tennessee are buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Roscoe. (See detailed information below) Sam Chappell lived in Bell Co , where he farmed. When Mary moved back to the Rogers-Heidenheimer area of Bell Co. after T.J.’s death, Sam helped her farm and raise her children. He never married. In later years he worked as a salesman for the Terrell Monument Co. in Temple. He became an alcoholic and was sent to the Marlin mineral bath sanitariums to be "dried out" more than once. He contracted tuberculosis and was placed in the charity ward in the TB hospital in Houston. When no more could be done for him, he was sent home to die in Bell Co.Home in 1920. Obituary, _ROSCOE TIMES, Friday, Oct. 16, 1925: ”J. M. Chappell died Tuesday afternoon, October 13, at four o’clock at the residence of his son, Asa Chappell, in Dallas. Mr. Chappell had gone to Dallas to visit his son and spend a few days at the Fair. When he arrived at the home of his son, he complained of being a little sick and his daughter-in-law gave him immediate attention, but he died in a short time of acute indigestion. Mr. Chappell’s body was shipped back to Roscoe, arriving on Thursday morning. Funeral services were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs.C. M. Moore, at three o’clock and he was buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery by the side of his wife, son and daughter. He is survived by two sons, Asa Chappell, Dallas, and B. B. and daughter, Mrs. C. M. Moore, Roscoe, with whom he made his home. All the children, as well as other relatives were present at the funeral. Mr. Chappell was well known in Roscoe, having moved here when there was hardly any town here.
