 John Thomas Harkins b. Dec 04 1837, Fayette, Fayette Co., Alabama; d. Oct 04 1904; Sugarloaf, Bell Co., Texas; Burial Sugarloaf Cemetery. Reinterred to Killeen Cemetery in 1942. He married Mary Jane Jones Dec 18 1859, b. Jan 12 1845 Fayette, Fayette Co., Alabama; d. Jun 14 1915 Belton, Bell Co., Texas; Burial Sugarloaf Cemetery. Reinterred to Killeen Cemetery in 1942

Served in Civil War as a Captain and was with Robert E. Lee when they surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia . He and his family came to Bell Co., Texas in 1877, settling in Sugarloaf community, which is where Ft. Hood stands today. After his death, his wife moved to Roscoe in Nolan Co., where some of her children already lived. Around 1911 or 1912, she moved back to Bell Co. living with her daughter, Jennie Blair in Belton
