James Fletcher Eidson family

      The James Fletcher Eidson born 1852 died 1913, with his wife Nancy Agnes and their family left their home in Camden County, Missouri by covered wagon to eventually settle in Sweetwater, Nolan Co., TX.  The 1880 census places them in San Saba Co., TX and their son Martin (age 2) was born in Texas.

        J. F. Eidson's nickname was "General" because he served as a water boy to Confederate troops in Missouri during the Civil War.

        Sweetwater, TX was considered dangerous for children to wander far away, so at that time visits to friends was made by escort, especially when the cowboys rode into town.  The family moved in 1906 to a new residence in Sweetwater to what is now Lamar Street.

        Reading law continuously since their marriage, Mr. Eidson's lifelong dream was soon realized when he was admitted to the bar.  In 1981 the young attorney was elected to serve as County Judge, a position he held for three terms.

        The couple had children named Gladys Nell and Lora May, Martin Van Buren, Clara B., Kathryn E., James Robert, John Henry, and Lilly (died in infancy).

        Nell Eidson married Mike Lucks in about 1917.  Mike Lucks was a Jewish immigrant  from Hungary.  They lived in Cooper, Delta County, Texas until Mike's death in 1925.  Nell remarried to Erwin Emery Smith (1898-1950).  Gladys Nell Smith (1891-1951) and Erwin Emery Smith are buried along with some of the Eidson's in Sweetwater Cemetery, Nolan Co., TX 

        Nell Eidson and Mike Lucks  had only one child, Auti Lucks, who died shortly after birth, only three weeks before Mike passed away.

        Nell was the sister of Lora May Eidson Leach who was a long-time resident of Sweetwater.  Lora May Leach served as the Nolan County Treasurer.
