RUFUS ALBERT NOBLE Family

My family has a long
history with the town Blackwell and with Hylton,
Nolan Co., TX.
I am sending several
pictures which were very likely taken in Nolan County,
near Blackwell. The picture labeled Rufus Albert Noble
is my grandfather. The picture was taken in 1919 just
north of Blackwell. The Noble family farm was located
across the road from what is now (or was as of 1996) the
Holland farm.
Rufus Albert Noble is said
to have been born in Ladonia, Texas (unconfirmed) in
1880. His parents were Joseph Noble of Union County,
Illinois and Priscilla Alice (nee Finley) Noble of Scott
County, Missouri.
Joseph and Priscilla Noble
as well as their son, Rufus Albert Noble are found in
the Grady County, OK census for 1900 near the town of
Alex.
Rufus
Albert Noble married Florence Roberson in Ada, OK in 1902.
They had a daughter named Alma born in 1904. About 1906
Rufus's wife, Florence, and an infant son may have died.
Rufus Albert and Otha Noble
are found in the 1920 Blackwell, Nolan County Census.
Their family was complete then, with four girls; Alma,
Audra, Lola, Julia who was called Jude and my dad, Rufus
Benjamin Noble (called Ben). Just above the Noble
family in this census is my great-grandparents, Otha Ann
Best Noble's parents; Benjamin N. Best and Julia (nee
McLaughlin) Best, along with their younger children.
The following year, Rufus
Albert suffered a fatal illness (now thought to have
been cancer). He died 13 May, 1921and is buried in the
Blackwell Cemetery. His marker is the same as that of
his mother, Priscilla Alice Noble. With five children to raise, my grandmother Otha Noble married an area rancher named George W. Miller. Mr. Miller's own children were grown and living elsewhere and he was considerably older than my grandmother. I'm not sure how long the Miller/Noble family remained in the area. They are found in Littlefield, Lamb County, Texas on the 1930 census.
My grandmother's parents and
other relatives, the Best and McLaughlin families,
resided in the Oak Creek area, and many are found in the
Hylton and Blackwell Cemeteries.
Benjamin Best (Otha Best
Noble's father) who was born in 1858 in Darlington
County, South Carolina was buried in the Hylton Cemetery
20 May, 1941.
Julia Ann (twin to Flora)
McLaughlin (Otha Best Nolan's mother) was born near
Gilmer, Upshur County, Texas in 1861died 7 July, 1933
and is also buried in the Hylton Cemetery. David Neal McLaughlin, was born about 1827/1828 in Georgia, his wife Ellen (nee Round) was born 1833 in Clark County, Arkansas (parents of Julia Ann and Flora McLaughlin) are buried in the Hylton Cemetery.
My dad had such fond
memories of the years spent at the Oak Creek area that
he, my mom, and my youngest brother moved to Blackwell
about 1974. My brother Bruce went to the Blackwell
school and played football for the Blackwell Hornet
team.
In 1982, I (Linda Noble
Murphy) moved to Blackwell with my two sons, Shawn and
Jason. My children, too, have the best memories of
their hometown.....tiny little Blackwell, Texas. My parents moved from the area in 1993 and I moved in 1996, but the family history remains in Nolan County.
Names of some families that
have married in with the McLaughlins and Bests include
Stracener, Lightfoot, McCrory, Magness, Patterson,
Burwick, Lewis, Armstrong, and others. Every two years or so, John McLaughlin of Sweetwater has organized a reunion of McLaughlin "Cousins". |
