Maurice Wayne Smith

  Maurice Wayne Smith, 62, of Abilene died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, in Abilene .

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005, in the Abilene Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Jerry Vinson officiating.

Burial followed in an Abilene cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born on Dec. 7, 1942, in Sweetwater. He was an active member of West Texas Services for the Deaf in Abilene .

Survivors include a special friend and partner, Bobbie Connell of Abilene ; and two brothers, Calvin Smith of Kyle and Alvin Smith of Roby.

Pallbearers were Fred Garza, Bobby Weyandt, Paul Freud, Jay Howard, John Craig Smith and Craig Finely.


Roy Gene Boiles Jr.

Roy Gene Boiles Jr., 35, of Merkel died Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, in Abilene.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, in the McCoy Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater with Pastor Wayne Kirk and Pastor Freddy Gillentine officiating.

Burial followed in the Garden of Memories in Sweetwater.

Mr. Boiles was born on July 25, 1970, in Sweetwater. He was a floor hand for Coys Well Service. Mr. Boiles lived most of his life in Sweetwater and was a resident of Merkel the past two years. He also worked for Ludlum's Measurement in maintenance in the past.

Survivors include his mother, Susan Brown of Abilene; his father, Roy Gene Boiles Sr. of Sweetwater; one son, Justin Lee Boiles of Ringgold, La.; one brother, David Creek of Brownwood; one sister, Misty Brown of Dallas; one half-sister, Vickie Jean Kellerman of Big Spring; his maternal grandmother, Betty Bax of Abilene; and several nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts.

He was preceded in death by his maternal step-grandfather, Lambert Bernard Bax, on Oct. 14, 1988; his paternal grandparents, E.L. Boiles and Lille Mae Boiles; and his maternal grandfather, John Phillips, in 1974.


 

Joe D. Killgore

Joe D. Killgore, 70, of Maryneal died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, in the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, in the Roscoe First Baptist Church with the Revs. Ward Hayes and Truman Davis.

Burial will follow in the Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, 2005, in the funeral home.

Mr. Killgore was born on July 14, 1935, in Dimmitt. He married Charlene Riddle on Aug. 14, 1968, in Tahoka. Mr. Killgore was a lifelong resident of Nolan County and a member of the Maryneal Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Roscoe High School and Tech Tech University. Mr. Killgore was a full-time school teacher and rancher, teaching at Highland schools for 31 years before retiring.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene of Maryneal; one son, Tim Stevenson and his wife, Harriet, of Italy; three daughters, Tammy Stewart and her husband, Dwayne, of Grapevine, Rebekah Waddell and her husband, Bryan, of O'Connor, and Jennifer Wood and her husband, Archie Lenn, of Sweetwater; one brother, Mark Killgore and his wife, Joanne, of Dallas; one brother-in-law, Bill Manire of Albuquerque, N.M.; and 11 grandchildren, Steven Stewart, Jason Stewart, Tara Stewart, Daniel Stevenson, Benjamin Joe Stevenson, Mikayla Waddell, Corban Waddell, Bryanna Waddell, Anna Lisa Waddell, Seth Wood and Jolenn Wood.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Manire.


 

JOHN L. BYRNE

John L. Byrne, 69, of Sweet-water died Friday, Oct. 14, 2005, in his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, in the McCoy Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater with Mike Ensminger and Ernest Smith officiating.

Burial will follow in the Sweetwater Cemetery.

Mr. Byrne was born on Feb. 2, 1936, in Brown County. He married Noma Ware on July 14, 1956, in Sweetwater. Mr. Byrne was a member of Normady Ave. Church of Christ. He was a truck driver for Pace Packing and U.S. Gypsum. Mr. Byrne was in the National Guard for nine and one-half years and lived in Sweetwater since 1946.

Survivors include his wife, Noma Byrne of Sweetwater; two daughters, Jackie Ray of Aransas Pass and Jeneta Layman and her husband, Loyd, of Bay City; two sons, Jay Byrne of Spokane, Wash., and Jamey Byrne of Allen; one sister-in-law, Oma Byrne of Bronte; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph B. Byrne and Lola Bell Byrne; and two brothers.


 

WANDA McCOY

Wanda McCoy, 41, of Sweet-water died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, in Lubbock.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, in the McCoy Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater.

Burial will follow in the Sweetwater Cemetery.

Ms. McCoy was born on Dec. 21, 1963, in Sweetwater. She attended Sweetwater High School and was a lifelong resident of Sweetwater. Ms. McCoy was a member of the Mt. Rose Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Tiresa West of Abilene; two sons, Kasey Montgomery of Abilene and Jawel Montgomery of Fort Worth; four sisters, Sharon Williams, Teresa Williams and Felicia Roberson, all of Sweetwater, and Keetha West of Big Spring; three brothers, Chris Taylor and Tyrone Amos, both of Sweetwater, and Marcos West of Big Spring; two grandsons, six nieces and six nephews.


Cayetano Olvera

Cayetano Olvera, 98, of Sweetwater died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005, in his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Michael Rodriguez officiating.

Burial will follow in the Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, in the McCoy Chapel of Memories.

Mr. Olvera was born on Aug. 7, 1907, in Old Mexico. He married Francisca Gutierrez on Dec. 1, 1934, in Sweetwater. Mr. Olvera retired from Walls Industries in 1973 as a watchman. He owned Olvera Grocery Store and was a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Olvera was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and lived most of his life in Sweetwater. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Nolan County Honor Guard and American G.I. Forum.

Survivors include one daughter, Petra Olvera of Sweetwater; one son, Adolfo Olvera and his wife, Elvira, of Roscoe; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Oct. 8, 1986; one sister and two brothers.


Walter Billberry

Walter Billberry, 87, of Sweetwater died Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, in the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, in the Clovis District Cemetery in Clovis , Calif. , with the Rev. Steve Hopkins officiating.

Services will be under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.


James Bennett (“Jimmy”) Edwards

James Bennett “Jimmy” Edwards, a former longtime resident of Sweetwater, passed away Oct. 21, 2005, in Highlands . He was 90 years of age, born Feb. 24, 1915, in Trinidad , Colo. , to James E. Edwards and Virginia Miller Edwards.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Evelyn Sollis Edwards; one son, James David Edwards and his wife, Ann Edwards, of Sugar Land ; and one daughter, Virginia Woods and her husband, C.R. “Dickie” Woods of Highlands . He is also survived by six grandchildren, Angela Smittle and her husband, Carl Smittle, of St. Louis, Mo., Amy Foster of Nashville, Tenn., Andrea Edwards of Abilene, Jennifer McCann, Jessica Woods and her husband, Moises Lopez, of Highlands, and Dickson Woods and his wife, Jo Ellen, of Baytown. Also survived by four great-grandchildren, Emma Foster, Michael McCann, Emma Lee Lopez and Logan Lopez; and one brother, John Edwards of Hamlin.

He was employed at United States Gypsum Company for 47 years before retiring. Jim was a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church , where he served as a deacon and taught the men's Bible class. He was also a former member of First Baptist Church in Sweetwater.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at Trinity Baptist Church with the Revs. Malcom Brown and Ward Hayes officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories , Sweetwater.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at Cate-Spencer and Trent Funeral Home in Sweetwater.

 


 

Robert “Rob” Holman

Mr. Robert “Rob” Holman, 63, of Colorado City died Wednesday in a local hospital.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, in the 22nd and Austin Streets Church of Christ with Royce Clay officiating.

Burial followed in the Colorado City Cemetery under the direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.

Mr. Holman was born in Colorado City on Aug. 23, 1942, to Whit and Wilda Rogers Holman. He was a 1960 graduate of Colorado High. He married Karen Marricle on July 29, 1967, in Colorado City . He was a lifelong farmer and rancher in Mitchell County , and a member of the 22nd and Austin Streets Church of Christ. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was on the Cap Rock Electric board of directors for 22 years.

He is survived by his mother, Wilda Holman of Colorado City; his wife of 38 years, Karen Holman of Colorado City; daughters, Nikki Smith and her husband, Rodney, of Olton, and Halie Holman of Colorado City; one son, Barry Holman and his wife, Shari, of Colorado City; five grandchildren, Kaytlin Smith and Kaden Smith, both of Olton, and Keifer Holman, Hunter Holman and Jaycee Holman, all of Colorado City; one sister, Sue McGuire of Snyder; and two brothers, Donald Holman of Sand Springs and Marvin Holman of Sweetwater.

He was preceded in death by his father, Whit Holman; a daughter, April Holman; and a sister, Karen Kay Sanders.


Carol Elizabeth Siever

 

Carol Elizabeth Siever, 43, of Sweetwater died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, in her residence.Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Tues-day, Oct. 25, 2005, in the Sweetwater Cemetery with the Rev. Floyd Shifflett officiating.

 

Services will be under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.


 

Stanley E. Millican

Graveside services for Stanley E. Millican, 91, of Tishomingo, Okla., will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, in the Sweetwater Cemetery with Dr. Harvey Tingle officiating.

Services will be under the direction of Clark Funeral Service of Tishomingo, Okla.

Mr. Millican passed away on Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Medical Center of Southeastern Oklahoma in Durant.

He was born on June 1, 1914, in Coke County to Charlie W. and Annie Maud Lamb Millican. After graduating from high school, he married Blanche Estell Guthrie on Dec. 27, 1947, in San Angelo. He worked for many years as a laundry worker before his retirement. Mr. Millican was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Lubbock, and was a very social person. He enjoyed playing and watching basketball among other hobbies. He moved to Johnston County in July 2004 from Lubbock, so that he would be near his family who live in this area.

Mr. Millican was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on Aug. 31, 1984; and his older sister, Vera Brodnax.

He is survived by his twin sisters, Reba Hipp of Durant, Okla., and Eva Walls of Denton; and seven nieces and six nephews.


Jason “Coach Caddie” Moore

Jason Michael Moore, 26, of Hickory Creek died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005. in Denton. He was born Dec. 18, 1978, in Midwest City, Okla. He was a member of the Aubrey I.S.D. coaching staff.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, at 10: a.m. at New Life Worship Center with the Rev. Jim Brown Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Roscoe Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, from 6-8 p.m. at Slay Memorial Funeral Center.

He is survived by his parents Donald and Vickie McIntire Cheek; one sister Melissa Cheek; and one niece, Breana Cheek, all of Hickory Creek. He is also survived by maternal grandparents, Cecil and Carol McIntire of Sweetwater; and aunts and uncles, Judy and Ronny Kinsey of Sweetwater, Linda and Donnie Kubala of Roscoe, Alan and Debbie McIntire of Roscoe, and Jamie and Jenie Walker of Palo Pinto.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorials donations to the Aubrey I.S.D. Athletic Booster Club.

Arrangements are under the direction of Slay Memorial Funeral Center, Aubrey.


Charles Pinkerton Hankins

Charles Pinkerton Hankins, age 89, of Sweetwater , Texas passed away on Friday, October 28, 2005 at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.

Funerals services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, October 31, 2005 at the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with Reverend David Chittenden and Reverend James Baker officiating. Burial will be in the Sweetwater Cemetery .

Charles was born in Stephenville , Texas on March 31, 1916. He married Mabel Corbin on May 9, 1943 in Sweetwater , Texas . He had been a member of the Broadway Baptist Church , a Division Manager for Meads Bread Company, and had worked for Mrs. Baird Bread Company. He was also a House Parent for the West Texas Childrens Home in Pyote , Texas and was a World War II Army Veteran.

He is survived by: his wife, Mabel Hankins of Sweetwater , Texas ; two sons, Ken Hankins of Abilene , Texas and Danny Hankins of Noosho , Missouri ; a sister, Frances Howell of Lubbock , Texas ; a brother, Jack Hankins of Goldthwaite , Texas ; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother T. W. (Slim) Hankins, and a sister, Mittie McDonough.

Pallbearers will be Calvin Daniel, Aubrey Turner, Ray Davison, Arthur Ray Boyd, Bill Adkins, and Frank Beam.

The family will receive visitors from 3:00 p.m., until 5:00 p.m., Sunday, October 30, 2005 at McCoy Funeral Home.


Mathis Swain Buddy Taylor

Mathis Swain Buddy Taylor, age 83, of Lewisville , Texas and formerly of Sweetwater, passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with Joe Bagby officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites performed by Sweetwater Masonic Lodge # 571.

Buddy was born on June 13, 1922 in Roscoe , Texas . He married Jewell Kiefer in Roscoe on November 15, 1941. He was a graduate of Roscoe High School in 1941. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U. S. Army Air Corp. He was the Hudson Dealer in Sweetwater for many years and was partners with his dad, Arthur Taylor in the Pontiac dealership until 1975. In 1952 he purchased property in Lovington , New Mexico and fed cattle in the feed lots. He lived in Lovington , New Mexico from 1969 until 1982 when he retired. He was a member of the Sweetwater Masonic Lodge # 571. He was a 32nd degree mason and was a member of the Suez Shrine Temple in San Angelo , Texas .

Buddy is survived by: his wife, Jewell Taylor of Lewisville , Texas ; a daughter, Donna Easom and husband, Jerry of Farmers Branch , Texas ; two grandsons, Brandon Bernstein of Lake Forest , California , and Clayton Taylor Easom of Fayetteville , Arkansas ; a brother-in-law, George Kiefer of San Antonio , Texas and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are: John Akins, Walter Taylor, Charles Diggs, Kenny Maxwell, Lewis Williams, and John Meadows.

The family will receive friends and visitors from 10:30 a.m. until service time on Wednesday morning at the funeral home.


Allen W. Bunn

Allen W. Bunn, 54, of Sweetwater died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, in his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005, in the McCoy Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater with Jerry Huffman officiating.

Burial will follow in the Sweetwater Cemetery.

Mr. Bunn was born on Dec. 13, 1950, in Big Spring. He married Kaye Bunn on Oct. 17, 1970, in Coahoma. Mr. Bunn was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a bio-medical technician. He lived in Sweetwater since 1990 and was a former resident of Lubbock. Mr. Bunn loved fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Kaye Bunn of Sweetwater; and one son, Drew Bunn of Roscoe.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Montez Bunn; and his mother-in-law, Reba Wolf.


Celia M. Sanchez

Celia M. Sanchez, 79, of Sweetwater died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, in the Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.

Prayer services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005, in the McCoy Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater with Father Michael Rodriguez officiating.

Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, in the funeral home.

Mrs. Sanchez was born on Dec. 1, 1925, in Corpus Christi. She married Aniceto Sanchez in Corpus Christi. Mrs. Sanchez was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and lived in Sweetwater since 1962. She was a housewife.

Survivors include two sons, Rene Sanchez and his wife, Minnie, and Joe Sanchez and his wife, Odilia, all of Sweetwater; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 11, 2004; and two sons, Fermin Sanchez on Feb. 15, 2004, and Robert Sanchez on July 13, 1996.


 Joyce Whaley

Joyce Whaley left this life on Oct. 16, 2005, in Sweetwater at the age of 83.

She was born Oct. 18, 1921, to W.H. “Willom” Whaley and Aileen Beall Whaley in Sweetwater. She graduated from Newman High School and attended the University of Texas from 1938 to 1941. “Pinky” was named Miss Sweetwater Beauty Revue on July 14, 1938, and Miss West Texas 1939 by the West Texas Chamber of Commerce. Her nickname partially derived from her auburn colored hair. Joyce moved to Clayton, N.M., in a first marriage, and lost a son at birth during World War II. She later worked with American Airlines as a flight attendant. Joyce then worked with the American Red Cross in the U.S. and Japan, leaving that career to care for her aging parents. She lived in Sweetwater since that time, becoming a very private person who was loyal to old friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; the infant son; a stepson, Michael McElyea; and cousins, George Dent Beall, Dr. Jimmy Beall and Josephine Price.

She is survived by first cousins, Allen and Don Wright of Abilene, Jane Beall Carothers of Dallas; and cousins, Patricia Beall of Sweetwater, Dr. Bob Beall of Mesquite, Edie Beall of Ruidoso, N.M., Diane Medford of Reclaw, Eddie Price of Silva, N.C., many cousins of the next generation, and special friend Edwin Schwartz of Fort Worth.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 1311 McCauley, Sweetwater at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005 with the Rev. Howell Martin officiating. There will be no prior visitation as the body was cremated. In lieu of flowers, donations to hurricane relief will be appreciated by the family.


William Edsel Bankhead

William Edsel Bankhead, 79, died Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at Roscoe Health Care Center. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Champion Baptist Church, with Rev. Bruce Parsons and Rev. Corey Cornutt officiating. Burial will follow in Champion Cemetery, directed by McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.

Mr. Bankhead was born January 6, 1926 in Roscoe. On May 12, 1950, he married Wynona Mae Eckert. He was a graduate of Highland High School and was Highland's Voice of the Hornets for 30 plus years. Mr. Bankhead was a retired farmer and for 12 years, was Nolan County Commissioner. In addition, he was a member of Champion Baptist Church and was a deacon for 56 years. Mr. Bankhead was a member of the Roscoe Lions Club, a member of the Highland School Board of Trustees for 17 years, director of Roscoe Co-op Gin for ten years, a member of the Nolan County Livestock Association for many years, and served with the Farm Service Agency for nine years.

Mr. Bankhead was preceded in death by: two brothers, D.E. Bankhead and Troy Bankhead; and two sisters, Latane McKibben and Neil Bankhead.

Survivors are: his wife, Wynona Bankhead of Roscoe; two daughters, Janice Carnathan and husband Ray of Roscoe, and Jarmila Cornutt and husband Donnie of Roscoe; two sons, Wendell Bankhead and wife Debbie of Roscoe, and Randall Bankhead and wife Mary of Roscoe; four sisters, Hautine Bankhead of Oklahoma City, OK, Evelyn Hard of Sanger, Ethelyn Blackwell of Maysville, MO, and Roberta Campbell and husband J.L. of Roscoe; nine grandchildren, Kimberley Gray, April Taylor, Brandon Bankhead, Joanna Self, Chris Carnathan, Bryan Bankhead, Corey Cornutt, Laura Bankhead, and Scott Bankhead; and eleven great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be: Brandon Bankhead, Bryan Bankhead, Chris Carnathan, Matt Self, Tim Gray, Will Taylor, and Scott Bankhead. Honorary pallbearers will be: James Wells, Danny Thompson, Jimmie Burke, Mark Wright, Karry Owens, and David Stewart.

Memorials may be made to Champion Baptist Church of Hendrick Hospice Care.
