S.J. RENFRO RITES FRIDAY

 

ROSCOE – Funeral services for Sam Jack Renfro, 69, retired farmer and former maintenance manager of Simmons Memorial Hospital Sweetwater, are set for 2 p.m. Friday at Roscoe First Baptist Church .

 

He suffered a heart attack while working in the yard at his home Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician.

 

Mr. Renfro was born in Ellis County on Feb. 7, 1893 and had lived in Roscoe since 1926.  For two and a half years he was maintenance manager with the hospital.

 

On Sept. 20, 1914 he was married to Bessie Williford at Van Zandt County.  He was a member of the Baptist Church .

 

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Gordon of Seattle, Wash. and Ray of Arlington; three daughters, Mrs. O.D. Hopkins of Santa Barbara, Calif., Miss Virginia Renfro and Mrs. Mary Hall, both of Arlington; two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Jacobs of Loraine and Mrs. Della Murphy of Baybank (?); eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. at the church with the pastor, Rev. Glenn Roenfeldt and Rev. G. A. Elrod officiating.  Burial will be in Roscoe Cemetery under direction of Wells Funeral Home.

 

Pallbearers will be M. T. Pointer, A. E. Lamb, B. M. Cooper, James Jones, Barney Wallace and Gene Rayburn.

Mrs. John Catchings Died Suddenly In Chicago, Ill.

 

Word has been received in Lovington of the death of Mrs. John Catchings in Chicago Thursday, while visiting friends and relatives there.

 

Mrs. Catchings, one of Lea County's oldtimers moved to Sweetwater, Texas, about a year ago to make her home.

 

She and Mr. Catchings homesteaded at Humble City in 1909 and at the time they moved to Sweetwater, donated a large ranch to the Abilene Christian College..  A cafeteria at the college was named for the Catchings.

 

They also reserved a 160 acre farm at Humble City to have as a home if they decided they didn't like Sweetwater.

 

Funeral services will be held in Sweetwater sometime Sunday.  The time and place is not known.


 

Dr. Peters Dies; Rites Tuesday

Dr. Roland O. Peters, 60, surgeon and physician here since 1930 and local civic leader for many years, died at l:45 p.m. Sunday at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston after a two weeks illness.

 

A memorial service is set here for 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church the pastor, the Rev. William F. Henning officiating.

 

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the medical profession and Masons of this area.

 

The family has requested that those wishing to send memorials make donations to the Scholarship Fund of Texas Medical School of Nursing in charge of Mrs. A.R. Pierson, Galveston, or the local cancer society.

 

He came to Sweetwater in 1930 following his graduation from University of Texas Medical School at Galveston and established his practice here.  In 1939 he built the Peters Clinic here.

 

Dr. Peters was born in Galveston, May 20, 1905, the son of the late Dr. O.K. Peters.

 

He was married to Virginia Mae Driver, a nurse of Slaton, in 1929.

 

He was a football star in Ball High School at Galveston and was guard for the Rice Owls in the 1920's.

 

During World War II, he was a captain during his two years service in the Army in several Southwest Pacific invasions and was a battalion surgeon.  He returned here from the war, Dec. 5, 1945.

 

Dr. Peters was former city commissioner and mayor here, a Mason, Scottish Rite Mason, member of Suez Temple, past president of Sweetwater Lions Club, a member of Texas Medical Association and Texas Association of General Practice, and was also past president of Sweetwater Country Club.

 

The family home here is at 800 Silas St.  Surviving Dr. Peters are his wife: a son, Roland O. Peters, Jr. of Sulphur Springs; a daughter, Mrs. Morton P. (Carolyn) Schercer of Huntsville, Ala.; five grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Thord Dockery of Lubbock and a nephew, Dr. Karl Dockery of Lubbock.

 

The body is in state at Patterson Chapel of Memories.  Internment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery here.

 

Dr. Peters had been active until a recent check-up in a Lubbock clinic and a trip to Galveston hospital two weeks ago.

 

A friend of Dr. Peters commented Monday, "He was really a man who met the human needs.  He was passionately concerned in trying to meet the needs of everyone who called, regardless of age, creed or color."

WILLIAM EARL TUCKER

William Earl Tucker, 78, of Blackwell, died Friday, April 9, 2004 at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo.

 

Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church in Blackwell Monday, April 12, 2004 at 2 p.m.  Rev. John Curry will officiate.  Burial will follow at the Blackwell Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.

 

Pallbearers will be Will Lenoir, Ray Walls, Jay Lenoir, Bryant Lenoir, Darrell Hardin and Rodney Tucker.  Honorary pallbearers will be members of the the Hylton Masonic Lodge #884.

 

Mr. Tucker was born Nov. 1, 1925 in Sweetwater.  He married Gwen Ader June 8, 1954 in Georgetown.  He was a member of Hillside Christian Church of Amarillo and a 32 degree Mason and member of Hylton Masonic Lodge #884.

 

Mr. Tucker retired from the Sandia National Lab in 1983 where he worked as a supervisor from 1953 to 1983.  He had an Associate's degree from Amarillo College.  He was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Navy.

 

Survivors include his wife, Gwen Tucker of Blackwell; one daughter, Mavanee Edgington and husband, Lee of Houston; one son, Blake Tucker and friend, Cindy of Las Vegas, Nev.; three step-daughters, Shirley Rustin of Garland, Marie White of San Antonio and Linda McLean of San Antonio; one sister, Helen Woods and husband, Cecil of Sweetwater; one brother, Howard Tucker and wife, Leona of Ft. Stockton; grandchildren, Adam Edgington and Abel Edgington, Travis Tucker and Cody Tucker; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his father, W.O. Tucker in August, 1984; his mother, Mary Tucker in February, 1985; and two brothers, E.J. Tucker in October, 1996 and Lavelle Tucker in May, 2001.

 

Memorials may be made to the Blackwell Volunteer Fire Department.

ALMA JEAN CORNETT

Alma Jean Cornett, 78, of Lamesa, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at Medical Arts Hospital.

 

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 10, at First Baptist Church in Lamesa with Rev. Nathan McBride and Rev. Clifton Igo officiating.  Burial followed at Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Branon Funeral Home of Lamesa.

 

Cornett was born June 11, 1925 in Clifton, Tenn. and married Henry Cornett April 5, 1944, in San Diego, Calif.  She managed the Sears store in Lamesa for 28 years and was a 58-year member of the First Baptist Church.

 

Survivors include three daughters, Patsy Sue King of Sweetwater, Joan Paske of Lamesa and Judy Ann Beam of Lubbock; one sister, Helen Gilliam of Clinton, Tenn.; one brother, Earl York of Gainsville, Fla.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 25, 1995; and one grandson, Hugh Allen King in 1986.

J.D. TAYLOR

 

J.D. Taylor, 72, of Blackwell died Sunday, April 17, 2005, in his home.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2005, in the Blackwell First Baptist Church with the Rev. John Curry officiating.

 

Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral home of Sweetwater.

 

A family visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2005, in the family home in Blackwell.

 

He was born on Aug. 26, 1932, in Bronte.  Taylor married Anna B. Gallaway on Dec. 6, 1961, in San Angelo.  He was a longtime resident of Nolan County and worked for Lone Star Industries as a utility man for many years.  He was a member of the Blackwell Baptist Church and participated in gospel singings around the area for many years.

 

Survivors include his wife, Anna Taylor of Blackwell; four sons, Joseph D. Taylor Jr. and his wife, Sharon, and Vance Taylor and his wife, Lucile, all of Blackwell, Robert Bledsoe and his wife, Ann, of Grovetown, Ga., and Tommy B. Bledsoe and his wife, Brenda, of Georgetown; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

ZID D. HERRING

 

San Angelo Standard Times - Dec. 1980

 

BALLINGER - Zid D. Herring, 80, of Ballinger and father of a San Angelo resident, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1980 at 7 p.m. Saturday in Ballinger Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.

 

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Rains-Seale Funeral Home chapel with burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

 

Herring was born Nov. 10, 1900, in Coleman County.  He was married to Mildred Scales May 15, 1927, in Breckenridge.  He ranched in Nolan and Runnels counties all his life.

 

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Billie Jean Herring of San Angelo, Hettie Mae Taylor of Fort Stockton, Joy Lee Owens of Maryneal; two sons, E.S. Herring of Junction, Z.D. Herring, Jr., of Fort Stockton; three sisters, Ione Touchstone of Ballinger, Edith Cervenka of Coleman, Maggie McKay of El Paso; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

MILDRED HERRING - Mildred was known as "Dobbie" Herring

 

Mrs. Mildred Herring, 83, longtime Ballinger resident, died Thursday, Aug. 20, in Ballinger Memorial Hospital.  Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, in Raines-Seal Funeral Home Chapel.

 

She married Zid Dalton Herring on May 15, 1927 in Breckenridge.  He preceded her in death in 1980.

 

Survivors include three daughters, Billie Jean Herring, San Angelo, Hettie Mae Taylor, Ft. Stockton, and Joy Lee Owens, Maryneal; two sons, Z.D. Herring, Jr., Maryneal, and E.S. "Snookie" Herring, Maryneal; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.


HARVIE FRANKLIN SAUNDERS

June 13, 1975

Funeral services for Harvie Franklin Saunders, 82, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Blackwell Cemetery.  Newby Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

 

Mr. Saunders died Thursday of last week in a Sweetwater hospital.

 

He was born Feb. 23, 1883 in Anderson County.  he moved to Coke County in 1915 and was a rancher and farmer.  He was married to Bertie Cade Oct. 31, 1912 in Anderson County.

 

Survivors include his wife; four sons, John W. Saunders of Cortez, Co., H.F. Sanders, Jr. of Dallas, James H. Saunders of Blackwell and Rex Saunders of Robert Lee; four daughters, Mrs. Florine Van Zandt of Blackwell.  Mrs. Evelyn McRorey of San Angelo, Mrs. Frances Sneed of Fort Worth and Mrs. Eula Fitzgerald of Bonnaza, Ore.; a sister, Mrs. Dona Meredith of Sacramento, Calif.; 20 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

BERTIE CADE SAUNDERS

Bertie Cade Saunders, 94, of Blackwell died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1992, in a Loraine nursing home.

 

Graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Blackwell Cemetery, directed by Shaffer Funeral Home.  The Rev. Phil Bell, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Bronte conducted the service.

 

She was born Feb. 22, 1898 in Anderson County.  She was a homemaker.  She was married to Harvey Saunders in 1912 in Frankston, TX.  They moved to Blackwell in 1915.

 

Survivors include three sons, Pete Saunders of Cortez, Co., and James Saunders and Rex Saunders both of Blackwell; four daughters, Flourine Van Zandt of Blackwell, Evelyn McRorey of San Angelo, Frances Snead of Fort Worth, and Eula Fitzgerald of Reno, Nev.; a brother, Roscoe Cade of Houston; a sister, Jewel Zimmerman of Fort Worth; twenty grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons, Bill and H.F. Saunders.

CARUTHERS

B.E. Caruthers, Jr., 70, of Blackwell died Monday, Sept. 7, 1992, in Gatesville.

 

Graveside service was held Friday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. in the Blackwell Cemetery, directed by Shaffer Funeral Home.

 

He was born March 22, 1922, in Tulsa, OK, and was a longtime resident of Blackwell.  He was retired from Reynolds Aluminum Co. and was an Army veteran of World War II.

 

Survivors include a son, Bob Caruthers of Austin; a brother, Jack Caruthers of Phoenix, AZ; two sisters, Irene Debrinski of Tulsa and Juanita Castleberry of Fort Worth; and two grandchildren.

Ruby Ida Nations
ROSCOE - Ruby Ida Nations, 79, of Roscoe, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000 in the Roscoe Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000 at First Salem Lutheran in Roscoe with Rev. Glenn Dittmer officiating. Burial will follow in Roscoe Cemetery, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Roscoe.
Mrs. Nations was born April 14, 1921 in Nolan County, Texas. She married Anton Watzl in 1944 in Hermleigh. He preceded her in death in 1958. She married Bob Nations on Jan. 5, 1961 in Sweetwater.
A homemaker, Mrs. Nations lived in Nolan County all her life. She owned and operated Roscoe Garden Center for seven years. She was a past member of the Roscoe Garden Club. She attended school at Brownlee School and was a graduate of Roscoe High School.
Survivors include her husband, Bob Nations of Roscoe; one son, Ricky Watzl of Sweetwater; one daughter-in-law, Becky Watzl of Midland; three sisters, Teresa Weiss of Vera, Texas, Gladys Bownds of Thorndale, Texas and Iona Zinke of Hermleigh; and, four grandchildren.
In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son in 1950; a son, Ronald Watzl in 1991; and, a brother, Troy Rannefeld in 2000.
Pallbearers will be Don Richburg, Ralph Stirl, Bruce McGlothlin, Willie Hackfeld, Jerry Rannefeld and Raymond Zetzman.


Charlie Ambers McCright
Charlie Ambers McCright, 76, of Clyde, died Nov. 5, 2000 in the Hospice Care Unit of Abilene.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000 at the Clyde Church of Christ with Rick Cunningham and Jim Hall officiating. Burial followed at Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home in Clyde.
Mr. McCright was born Jan. 13, 1924 in Royston, Tx. to the late Walter A. and Iva Lou McCright. He married his wife, Billie Jean Wilkins McCright on Aug. 24, 1941 in Clairmont, Tx. They were married for 59 years. He was a veteran of World War II. 
He worked in construction all of his life, starting at Alston Construction of Sweetwater. He moved to Snyder in 1958 where he supervised the building of Stanfield Elementary. He then worked for Glenn W. Casey Construction in Odessa and Austin.
Survivors include his wife, Billie Jean Wilkins McCright of Clyde; one son, Danny and his wife, Flora McCright, of Fort Worth; one daughter, Frances and her husband, Bill Arbuckle, of Snyder; one brother, Jim and his wife, Amaleeta McCright, of Rotan; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Dean McCright; two sisters, Vera Lee Mitchell and Alece Ward; and, two brothers, Aubrey and Johnny McCright.


Robert E. Blailock
Robert E. Blailock, 91, of Abilene, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at an Abilene nursing home.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 at Starbuck Funeral Home Chapel in Merkel with Bobby Lee officiating. Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel.
Mr. Blailock was born in Vermillian Parish, La. on Sept. 18, 1909 to James Lacy and Martha Ann McClellan Blailock. He married Nola Knight Jan. 18, 1936 in Sweetwater. He worked for U.S. Gypsum in Sweetwater and owned and operated a Chevron gas station in Sweetwater until 1949. He owned Capitol Theater in Moran 1949 to 1954, worked for Chaney and Son Butane 1951 to 1980 and was a member of the First Christian Church of Cisco.
Survivors include his wife, Nola Blailock of Abilene; three daughters, Bobbie Belanger of Fort Worth, Joyce Elam of Abilene and Betty Rhynes of Abilene; one brother, Harvey H. Blailock of Sweetwater; one sister, May Rogers of Sweetwater; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, James Edgar Blailock.


Loretta Morgan
Loretta Morgan, 82, of Sweetwater, died Saturday, June 16, 2001 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.
Funeral services were held at the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Chapel in McKinney 12 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2001 with Robert Oglesby officiating. Burial followed at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen.
Mrs. Morgan was born Jan. 28, 1919 to James H. and Dora E. (Allen) Karr in Idalou. She married Harold Elden Morgan on Sept. 29, 1937. She was of the Church of Christ faith.
Survivors include two sons, Jim Morgan and wife, Sandra of Denver City and Dale Morgan and wife, Carole of Plano; one daughter, Linda Morgan Reed of Plano; four grandchildren, Terri Valenzuela, Dee Morgan, Britt Reed and Shane Reed; four great-grandchildren, Melissa Felton, Morgan Moss, Maggie Valenzuela and Caden Reed; one step-granddaughter, Tanya Loffler; five step-great-grandchildren, Madisson, Brenna, Jaina, Kaylen and Chris; one sister, Opal Powers of Brownfield; and one sister-in-law, Nelly Karr of Brownfield.
She was preceded in death by her husband; eight brothers and sisters; and one granddaughter, Debbie Morgan.


Wesley James Strength
Wesley James Strength, 66, of Oak Creek Lake near Blackwell, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001 at his residence.
Funeral services were pending Tuesday with McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
Mr. Strength was born on Jan. 7, 1935 in Bruceville, Tex. He married Barbara Nell O'Nell on July 18, 1958 in Waco. He lived at Oak Creek Lake the past seven years. He lived in Lubbock from 1969 to 1994 prior to moving to Oak Creek Lake. He was the executive director of Lubbock Boys Club until retirement. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Strength of Oak Creek Lake; two daughters, Lettie Maddux and husband, Kelly of Lubbock and Lisa Church and husband, Perry of Canyon; one brother, L.N. Strength of Tyler; and three grandchildren.

Albert Ortega
Albert Ortega, 53, of Sweetwater, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Services were held Monday, Nov. 5, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Father Mike Goode officiated. Burial followed at the Sweetwater Cemetery, all under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
Pallbearers were Oliver Clowers, Joe Gonzales, Ray Keith and Welton Ellison.
Mr. Ortega was born Oct. 18, 1948 in Brackettville. He married Mary Ophelia Garcia in 1997 in Sweetwater. He attended Holy Family Catholic Church, worked for T&R Oil Field Service. Formerly of Fort Stockton, he lived in Sweetwater for 25 years.
He was survived by his wife, Mary Ophelia Ortega of Sweetwater; two sons, Valentine Ortega of Del Rio and Albert Ortega, Jr. of Las Vegas, N.M.; one daughter, Rosie Ortega of Del Rio; two step sons, Juan Palamo of Sweetwater and Ray Campa of Midland; four step daughters, Blanca Campa of Sweetwater, Christina Campa of Laredo, Cecelia Hoover of Lewisville and Maria Madrano of Snyder; five brothers, Armando Ortega and Pete Ortega, both of Sweetwater, Mario Ortega, Richard Ortega and Nick Ortega, all of Brackettville; two sisters, Hortencia Pena and Diana Hernandez, both of Brackettville; 4 grandchildren; and 15 step grandchildren.

Thomas Jackson Clark
Thomas Jackson Clark, 45, of Sweetwater, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000 at his residence.
Services were pending at McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
Mr. Clark was born July 24, 1955 in Brunswick, Ga. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Survivors include: his parents, Jessie and Monteen Griffin; two sisters, Ann Clark of Sweetwater and Lucinda Hernandez of Brownsville; one brother, Pete Gavito of Brownsville; one niece, Jeanie Burns of Sweetwater; and, two great-nieces, Jessica and Brandi Burns.


Mary Grace Spence Treadaway
Mary Grace Spence Treadaway, 84, of Sweetwater, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 at Holiday Retirement Center in Sweetwater.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 at McCoy Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater with Rev. Leroy Scifres officiating. Burial followed at Roscoe Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
Mrs. Treadaway was born May 11, 1916 in Lee County. She married Richard Treadaway on May 12, 1934 in La Grange. She worked as a nurses aide at Roscoe and Sweetwater nursing homes for 21 years and attended Highland Baptist Church in Sweetwater. She lived in Sweetwater for the past 20 years and in Roscoe before that. She worked as a housewife.
Survivors include one daughter, Fay Beights and husband, Frank, of Sweetwater; five sons, Chester Lee Treadaway and wife, Ann, of Rush Springs, Okla., Billy Ray Treadaway and wife, Inez, of Roscoe, Kenneth Treadaway and wife, Glenda, of Medford, Ore., O.D. Treadaway and wife, Sharon, of Avrey and R.B. Treadaway and wife, Cookie of Medford, Ore.; a companion, Albert Campbell of Abilene; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John W. and Minnie Spence; three brothers, R.Q. Spence, James Spence and Sam Arnold Spence; three sisters, Ollie Campbell, Lousenda Robinson and Bulal Parham; and her husband, Richard Treadaway on June 22, 1985.
Pallbearers were Travis Robinson, J.L. Campbell, Wilford Petty, Dwayne Petty, Bill Parham and Bobby Dean Spence.

Manuel Allison
Manuel Allison, 80, of Gainesville, died Monday, April 16, 2001 at his residence.
A funeral service was held 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at Commerce Street Church of Christ in Gainesville with Mr. Percy Parrish officiating, assisted by Mr. Ronnie Quaid and Mr. Walter Vincent. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana under the direction of Clement-Keel Funeral Home in Gainesville. A family visitation was held at Clement-Keel Funeral Home on Tuesday night.
Born Jan. 31, 1921 in Vivian, La. to John and Ruth Allison, Mr. Allison worked for Arco Oil Company for 36 years. He married Bessie Fae Kelly on Dec. 20, 1941 in Gladewater. He was a member of the Optimist Club in Quitman and coached Little League Baseball.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie Fae Allison of Gainesville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Stephanie Allison of Shamrock, Philip and Lena Allison of Gainesville and Mike and Patti Allison of Roscoe; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Marie Vasarevic of Tyler; and one sister-in-law, Luella Allison of Lefors. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Manuel Allison, Jr.; two brothers, Johnny Allison and Marvin Allison; and one sister.
Pallbearers were friends and family members.

Ruth Varner
Ruth Varner, 88, of Snyder and formerly of Sweetwater, died Monday, June 18, 2001 at Cogdell Memorial Hospital in Snyder.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date as her body was cremated. Arrangements will be made under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
Ms. Varner was born Nov. 13, 1912 in Indianapolis, Ind.
Survivors include two daughters, Clara Denny of Snyder and Virginia Akin of Sweetwater; one son, John F. Denny of Bangor, Wash; and two step-daughters, Ethel Martin of Indianapolis, Ind. and Wilma Frymire of Irvington, Ky.


Marie Allen Newberry
SAN ANGELO -- Marie Allen Newberry, 84, of San Angelo, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001 in a local hospital. 
Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001 in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001 in Lee Cemetery in Winnsboro, Tex.
Pallbearers were Virgil Kelly, Murray "Monk" McKay, Marcus Gilstrap, Bill Brooks, J.W. Henson, Don Hayes, Tom Latham and Bobby Baucom.
Mrs. Newberry was born March 27, 1917 in Pickton, Tex. to George and Ida Pearl Keelin Allen. She married Clyde Newberry, Sr. on Oct. 17, 1942 in San Angelo. Mrs. Newberry had worked for Home Hardware, Hempill Wells and retired from Angelo Pellets. She was a member of Heights Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Martha Baker and husband, Don of Veribest; one son, Doug Attaway and wife, Diane of Hewitt and formerly of Sweetwater; one step-son, Clyde Newberry, Jr. and wife, Margie of Sylvania, Ga.; seven grandchildren, including Devan Knudson and husband, Conrad of Sweetwater; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, G.D. Allen and wife, Marie of Houston and Vaughn Allen of Tyler; one sister-in-law, Bernice Newberry of San Angelo; numerous nieces and nephews; a special friend, Paul Baldani of San Angelo; and a host of other friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clyde Newberry, Sr.; three brothers; three sisters; and one grandson, Scott Newberry.


C. O. Cross
C. O. Cross, 86, of Sweetwater and formerly of Big Spring, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.
Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Sept. 18, 2000 at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring with Dr. Randy Cotton, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church of Big Spring, officiating. Arrangements were made under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home of Big Spring.
Mr. Cross was born on March 19, 1914 in Hunt County, Tx. He married Mamie Wiswell on Sept. 19, 1946 in Reno, Nev. She preceded him in death on May 6, 1994.
Mr. Cross came to this area in 1920 and worked at the Big Spring State Hospital for many years, retiring in 1975. He moved to Sweetwater in 1996. He was a Baptist. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.
Survivors include: two daughters and sons-in-law, Janelle and Derryl Nelson of Sweetwater and Joyce and Ron Lofgren of Chandler, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and, four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Patsy Barber; his parents, J.M. and Nona Bell Alexander Cross; and, one brother, M. D. Cross.
The family suggests memorials be made to the donor's favorite charity.


Ella Bea Pitt
Ella Bea Pitt, 88, of Sweetwater, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000 at the Holiday Retirement Center in Sweetwater.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000 at the McCoy Chapel of Memories in Sweetwater with Dr. Mark Alexander officiating. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
Mrs. Pitt was born April 6, 1912 in Roosevelt County, N.M. She married Lester Pitt in 1931 in Chattanooga, Tenn. They were married for 69 years. She was a homemaker and had lived in Sweetwater since 1956. 
She had been a nurse at Simmons Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater and also a private duty nurse. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sweetwater and a member and conference officer of the WSCS and delegate to the United Nations. She was a 4-H Club leader for many years with many of her students winning national awards.
Survivors include her husband, Lester Pitt of Sweetwater; her daughter, Parthenia Balko and her husband, Doyle, of Fort Worth; two sons, Clifford Pitt and Gary Pitt and his wife, Janice, all of Coin, Iowa; two grandchildren; and, two great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Sarah Tollett; two brothers; and, three sisters.
Pallbearers will be Merrill Lewis, Frankie Little, Jimmy Fry, Jimmy Carson, Robert Whitteker and Paul McCarthy. Honorary pallbearers are Doyle Balko, Ronnie Dennis, Sean Pitt, Art Tollett, Jimmy Tollett and Gordon Musick.

Randy Dale Rowan
Randy Dale Rowan, 44, of Sweetwater, died Friday, June 22, 2001 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, June 25, 2001 at Trinity Baptist Church of Sweetwater. Rev. Randy Tenery and Dr. Travis Monday will officiate the services. Burial followed at the Garden of Memories in Sweetwater. Arrangements were made under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater. 
Mr. Rowan was born Oct. 1, 1956. He married Martha Renee Baker on June 21, 1987 in Sweetwater. He was an honor graduate of Sweetwater High School in 1975 and a 1979 graduate of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, where he received his B.B.A. He was employed by the First National Bank of Sweetwater and had been employed by Reeves Company and Sinclair Oil. He was a member of the Sweetwater Community Church and had lived in Sweetwater all of his life.
Survivors include his wife, Renee Rowan of Sweetwater; four daughters, Randi Dawn Rowan of Sweetwater, Teri L. Rowan of Fort Worth, Christina L. Rowan of Fort Worth and Chelle Rowan of Sweetwater; one step-son, Clint Hefner of Lewisville; his parents Jackie and Betty Rowan of Sweetwater; one sister, Sherry DeLeon of Sweetwater; two brothers, Rodger Rowan of Bronte and Robbie Rowan of Bastrop; and his father and mother-in-law, Bill and Wanda Baker of Lubbock.
Pallbearers were David McDonald, Terry Pittman, Paul Scott, Rob Zetzman, Stan Mulanax, Michael Thomas Montgomery.


 

Lelia M. Russell 
BALLINGER -- Lelia M. Russell, 77, of Ballinger, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001 in the Ballinger Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services were held Monday, Nov. 5, 2001 at 11 a.m. in Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo under the direction of Johnson's Funeral Home.
Mrs. Russell was born Sept. 27,1924 in Lamesa. She was a retired Medical Supply Clerk and a Morman.
She is survived by her two sisters, Lena Turner, of Sweetwater, and Dorothy Cochran of Ballinger; and one brother, Raymond Turner of San Angelo.


 

John William Midgett
John William Midgett, 59, of Colorado City died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001 at his home.
Graveside services were 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 18 at Colorado City Cemetery with Rev. Sammy Elliott officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Family visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, Dec. 17, 2001 at McCoy Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were James Pierce, Steve Rich, Royce Clay, Tony Rivera, Chris Pierce and J.W. Hunter.
Born Nov. 9, 1942 in Oblong, Illinois, Mr. Midgett had lived in Colorado City the past ten years and in Abilene ten years before Colorado City. He was married to Sandra Jean. He was a meat market manager most of his working life and was a Baptist.
Survivors include: his wife, Sandra Jean Midgett of Colorado City; one son, Scott Midgett and wife, Shelly, of Abilene; two daughters, Melinda Owens and husband, Glen, of Colorado City and Debbie Matos and husband, Dan, of Templeton, California; one brother, George Midgett of Oblong, Illinois; two sisters, Mary Dennis and Ruth Adams, both of Oblong, Illinois; seven grandchildren; and, two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Johnny Wayne Midgett, on Nov. 15, 1966.

Irene Wynona Welborn
Irene Wynona Welborn, 83, of Sweetwater died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.
Graveside services were 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001 at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. James Baker officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Cate-Spencer and Trent Funeral Home.
Ms. Welborn was a Christian. She had worked as a security guard for Hardin-Simmons University before retiring.
Survivors include: one sister, Lela Parker of Kansas City, Mo.; two grand-nieces and a grand-nephew, Pamela Nachbar, Russell Nachbar and Cheryle Miller; and, special friends, Martha and Julian Montoya of Sweetwater and Reyes and Hortencia Rodriguez of Abilene.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Pat and Hattie Murphy; and, one sister, Lola Martin.
