Andrew Crawford Cemetery
Surveyed by Marylee W. Knight 05-20-1978Directions:From Carthage, go southbound on U.S. Highway 79 South, to the intersection with FM 124 in the Fairplay Community. Turn right on to FM 124, go approximately 500 feet to the intersection with FM 1251. Turn left on to FM 1251 and continue for approximately 1.5 miles. The cemetery will be on the right side of the highway, behind the home of Kenneth and Emmy Guest. Mrs. Guest is the great-granddaughter of Andrew and Mary (Scott) Crawford.
There have never been tombstones for any of the persons who are known to have been buried here. It has always been maintained by family members and oral traditions alone furnish the information regarding the burials. The land on which it is located is part of the estate of Andrew and Mary that they purchased when they came to TX from Pike County, GA.
The two Rhodes children buried in the cemetery were the children of a family that lived nearby, but later moved away from Panola County. Nothing further on this family is known at this time.
Quite possibly there were other graves in the cemetery for which no one has knowledge. It is alleged that a young daughter of John Jackson and Angeline (Crawford) Wills died at the same time as her mother. It stands to reason that if Angeline were buried here, then her daughter was also. The Crawfords brought slaves with them to TX and it is possible that the slaves were buried with or near the Crawford family, but there is no record or family tradition regarding that.
