Lake Cemetery
Surveyed by Marylee W. Knight 09-25-98Directions: From Carthage go westbound on State Hwy 315 for 8.3 miles to the intersection with FM 1971. Turn left onto FM 1971 go southbound for 4.6 miles (just south of Dotson's Crossing) to County Road 1741. Turn left on CR 1741 and go 0.2 miles to where the oil surface ends. There will be a sign for Private Road 5741 on the right the driveway to the cemetery turns to the right just past that sign.
This cemetery is very well kept. It has a cyclone fence around it and is nestled in thick trees. Approximately 8-10 unmarked graves were noted. On one grave the headstone is missing but the footstone with the initials "W.L." is propped in the base where the headstone once was. There are two headstones in different places for the William Lake 1827-1879 with exactly the same dates. There are obvious grave indentions in both spots. No known explanation at this time for this duplication.
