FORTNER, Mary LaGrone
Funeral services for Mary LaGrone Fortner, 73, of Longview, formerly of Deadwood, were held Dec. 27, 2001 at Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Mervin Scott officiated. Burial followed in Deadwood Cemetery under the direction of Lipsey Funeral Home. She died Dec. 23, 2001 at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview.Born Dec. 8, 1928 in Deadwood, she was the daughter of Emmett and Madie Fuller LaGrone. She had lived in Longview for four years moving there from Deadwood. She was a member of Deadwood United Methodist Church, and was the manager of the Deadwood General Store during the 70's, worked for H & R Block during the 80's, and worked in the oil and gas business prior to 1971 in Shreveport, LA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris M. Fortner, who died May 11, 2000.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Mitch and Robin Fortner, of Longview; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clenton and Margie LaGrone, of Deadwood, and Bobby and Janice LaGrone, of Vicksburg, Miss.; sister, Doris Marsalis, of Covington, LA; and grandchildren, Megan, Mallory, and Madie Fortner, of Longview.
Pallbearers were Clint LaGrone, Killis LaGrone, Richard Bagley, Nealan LaGrone, Butch Marsalis, Barry LaGrone, and Donny LaGrone.

Burial will follow at 1 p.m. in Huffines Cemetery in Atlanta. Mrs. Smith, a former Avon representative, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001 in Carthage. Born June 3, 1914 in Cass County, she was the daughter of John Jasper and Maudie Kimre Festivan Moore. She attended school in Huffins and graduated from McCloud High School. She wed Charles Benton Smith on Jan. 26, 1936 and they celebrated 46 years of marriage before his death in 1982. She was a homemaker and sold Avon. She was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church in Carthage, and was a devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed ceramics, dolls and sewing. She was preceded in death by her son, Jerry Cleve Smith; brother, John Moore; sisters, Nellie Dees, Lilly Dauphine, Bernice Parker, Mary McLeod and Josie Elkins.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Donna Smith, of Carthage; daughters and sons-in-law, Devon and Richard Almand, of Carthage, Reba and Don Gordon, of Athens, and Becky and Bobby Malone, of Carthage; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of friends.
Pallbearers were Mike Almand, Tommy Smith, Gary Don Gordon, Brian Malone, Scott Castillo, Rick Almand, and Wesley Develin.

Memorial services for George Albert Riley, 57, of Jefferson will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 29, 2001 at the residence of Lloyd Rainwater, nephew of Mr. Riley, with Brother Yandell officiating. Arrangements are by East Texas Funeral Home of Longview. Mr. Riley died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, in a local hospital.Mr. Riley was born Dec. 2, 1944, in Cullen, La., to Thomas and Maudie Riley. He worked as a pipe fitter and was a longtime area resident.
Survivors include his brothers and sisters, Rachel Rainwater of Ore City, Norma Jean Guthrie of Kilgore, Donna Kay Christie of Glenwood Acres, Eugene Riley and Thomas Allen Riley, both of Tatum and Donald Ray Mangum of Harleton; and one stepdaughter, Christie Knoble.
Mr. Riley was preceded in death by his parents, Maudie Mangum and Thomas Grover Riley; one brother, Johnny Riley; and one sister, Lisa Roberts;
The family will receive friends before the service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ozelia Simoneaux.

MYERS, Jerry Milton
HOUSTON - Jerry Milton Myers, 49, of Katy passed away Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, after a brief battle with cancer. Mr. Myers was born Nov. 10, 1952, in Carthage, the son of H.A. Sr. and Fae Myers. He was raised in Center and Longview. In 1971, he graduated from Longview High School, where he was a football standout for the Longview Lobos. In 1976, Jerry received a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington; and, in 1989, he received an executive master's degree in business administration from the University of Houston.On Aug. 10, 1974, he married Dinah Kay Morris. He was employed by Thompson Paper Products Inc. from 1976 to 2000, when he became president and co-owner. He was employed by Prudential Insurance Co. as a certified financial planner 2000-2001.
Jerry was a great outdoorsman and sportsman whose hobbies included bird hunting, fishing in Matagorda Bay, skiing in Colorado and cheering for the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry also gave much back to his community, including many years as a team manager and positive role model for the Katy National Little League baseball organization, during which he influenced many young lives. He was an active member of Second Baptist Church of West Houston.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father and sister, Dora Lynn Myers. He is survived by his daughter, Lacey Kay Myers of Katy; his son, Paul Cunningham Myers of Katy; his mother, of Longview; his brother, H.A. Myers Jr. of Longview; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and friend Ellen Dickey of Katy.
Visitation is 6-9 p.m. today, Dec. 18, at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway in Houston.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at the First Baptist Church of Katy, 600 Pinoak Road in Katy. Visitation will follow in Longview 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, at Welch Funeral Home. A graveside service is set for 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, in Restland Cemetery in Carthage.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Hospice of the Texas Medical Center, 1905 Holcombe Blvd., or to the American Cancer Society

ROBERTS, Walter Russell
Services for Walter Russell Roberts, 77, of Longview will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17, 2001 at Rader Funeral Home Chapel of Longview, 1617 Judson Road, with the Rev. Diane Dill-Lanham officiating. Entombment will follow in Rosewood Park Mausoleum. Mr. Roberts died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, in a local hospital.Mr. Roberts was born Sept. 22, 1924, in Dallas to Walter Russell and Erna Roberts. He was a member of the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and had been employed by the Upjohn Co., working as a warehouseman for over 36 years. Mr. Roberts served his country during World War II in the U.S. Air Force. He married Nancy Myers on May 11, 1947.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today, Dec. 16, 2001 at the funeral home.
Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife, Nancy Roberts of Longview; two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Ann Roberts of Lewisville and Brad and Dalene Roberts of Carthage; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many wonderful friends whose lives he enriched with his humor, kindness and generosity and whose friendship and affection meant so much to him.
Serving as honorary pallbearer will be Ray Knox.

Funeral services for Mike Cummings, 44, of Joaquin, relative of Carthage residents Steve and Connie Walker, were held at 2 pm on Dec 9, 2001 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Center. The Revs. Mike Oliver, Elmer Mathews and Jerry Manis officiated. Burial followed in the Strong Cemetery in Shelby County under the direction of Watson and Sons Funeral Home. He died Dec 7, 2001 in Center.Born Aug 27. 1957 in Center, he was the son of Herman Leroy and Lillie Belle Murray Cummings. He was a life-time resident of Shelby County and was a shipping supervisor for Hendrix Manufacturing in Mansfield. He was a member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church and served for more than 20 years as a member of the Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister and his grandparents Henry and Hattie Cummings and Jeff and Resa Murray.
Survivors include his wife Freda Cummings of Joaquin, daughter Jennie Cummings of Joaquin; sons Mike Cummings, Jr. and Curt Cummings both of Joaquin; granddaughter Katelyne Cummings of Joaquin; sisters and brothers-in-law Patricia and Richard Gray, Linda and Roy Brodus and Sue and Ronny Raybon all of Joaquin; brothers and sisters-in-law Kenneth and Mary Cummings, Junior and Lucy Cummings and Oke and Lisa Cummings all of Joaquin.
Also surviving Cummings are his sisters-in-law and their spouses Connie and Steve Walker of Carthage and Deb and Ricky Burch of Stanley LA; brothers-in-law and their spouses Curtis M. and Rita Loftin and Ty Adams all of Shreveport; Ronald Joe and Debbie Loftin of Joaquin; aunt Annie Mae Ervin of Center, numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Mrs. Allen died at 9:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Marshall Manor Nursing Home.She was born on April 7, 1909, in Panola County to Nellie Williams and James Thomas Green. She graduated from Harris Chapel High School and the Oscar Jones School of Nursing. The licensed vocational nurse had worked at Marshall Memorial Hospital and was retired from her work at Oak Haven Nursing Home in Marshall. She had also worked as a dietitian at the public schools in Tatum. She was of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Allen is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, James and Juanita Allen of Tatum; her grandchildren, Becky Fry of Tatum, Jimmy Nelson of Fairplay, Pat Waterman of Georgetown, Marie Rand of Lufkin, James Allen II of Tatum, Gwen White of Houston, Lisa Allen of Plano and Lori Allen Fuller of Woodlawn; 17 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, one son and one daughter.

She had lived in Carthage for 55 years, moving here from Marshall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy O. Smith, Sr. who died Feb 12, 1993; son Ralph Smith and grandson Keith Smith.
Survivors include her daughter Billie Jean Vandagriff of Carthage, son Roy R. Smith, Jr. of Longview, sister Ruth Mills of Winona, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Born Dec 8, 1938 in Montrose CO, she was the daughter of Homer and Juanita Darlene Wheeler Tyler. She retired from Merry Maids of Houston coming to this area to spend her retirement. She was of the Baptist faith and attended Murry League Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening and cooking and loved her family. She was very proud of all her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her great-grandson Colton Anderson.
Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Randy Singletary and Mitchell and Diane Singletary, all of Marshall; daughters and son-in-law Betty and Ruff Wall, Jr. of Marshall and Darlene Menah of Carthage; brothers Frank Eaton of Florida, Donald Eaton of Cleveland, William Eaton of Conroe and Robert Eaton of Texas; sisters and brothers-in-law Jaquite and Charles West of Moscow, Betty Everett of Cleveland, Mary Eaton of Carthage and Eva and Paul Winters of Middleton NY.
Also surviving Sonnier is her special grandson Dwayne Wilkerson of Special Forces in Saudi Arabia; seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Honorary pallbearers will be Woody Pacousky, Robert Boley, Anthony Eaton and Michael Eaton.

Burial followed in Bethel Cemetery in Beckville under the direction of Jimerson Funeral Home. She died Nov 30, 2001 in Baylor Hospital in Dallas.
Born May 21, 1914 in Beckville, she was the daughter of Jack and Parilee King Gates. She was reared in Beckville and spent her entire life there. She was married to the late Eddie L. Bennett for 50 years. She loved people and her visits with everyone, but her favorite past time was fishing.
She was a member of the Eastern Star for 30 years, the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church secretary for 15 years as well as a Sunday School teacher for the church. She was affectionately known by all as "Aunt Sister". She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Jimmy Gates and her sister Elma Gates.
Survivors include her sons Roy Phillips and Ray Phillips both of Dallas; daughters Dorothy Jinks of Chicago IL and Mollye Winkley of Kansas City MO; brother Herman Gates of Carthage; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

CARTHAGE - The death of Louise Dickey, 60, of the Fairplay community was announced by Lipsey Funeral Home. She was born Feb. 14, 1941, in Lincoln, Kan., to Charles Albert and Printha Alice Marie Lieberger Anderson. Mrs. Dickey had lived in the Fairplay community since 1984, moving from Nashville, Ark.The Longview News Journal
Lipsey Family Funeral Home announced the death of Louise Dickey, 60, of the Fairplay Community. She was cremated. Arrangements were under the direction of Lipsey Family Funeral Home.
Born Feb 14, 1941 she was the daughter of Charles Albert and Printha Alice Marie Lieberger Anderson. She was a self-employed entrepreneur being in the restaurant business. She raised poodles and Chihuahua puppies and was also a home health aide who loved animal great and small. She had lived in Fairplay since 1984, moving from Nashville AR. She was preceded in death by her sister Sally Holder who died in 1972.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Richard L. and Gloria Hughes of Fairplay; daughter Charlene Hughes of Fairplay; brother Charles Anderson, Jr. of Hope AR; sister Clara Hickman of Highlandville MO and eight grandchildren.

Born May 20, 1910 in Wann, OK, she was the daughter of Jonce R. and Alma Davis Hendrickson. She was married to the late James Lloyd Folk. They moved from Kilgore to Carthage in 1946 at which time she and her husband built and operated the Carthage Airport that was located on the same property as the present Golden Corral Restaurant. Mr. and Mrs. Folk loved to garden and share their vegetables with friends. She also loved to quilt and crochet and children seemed to flock around her because she loved them and they could tell because of her actions. She was a member of Carthage Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Leona Pebbles, Edra Newby and Luetta Dickey; brothers G.R. Hendrickson, Ed Hendrickson and Carl Hendrickson and her grandson Mike Weaver.
Survivors include her daughter Pamela Weaver of Elysian Fields, brother Jack Hendrickson of Lake Murvaul; sisters Janice Zeigler of Wichita KA and Wasslea McRae of Mulvanne KA, numerous nieces and nephews and a dear friend Katherine Smith of Carthage.

Born Aug 16, 1916 in Orange, he was the son of Allen and Ada Lamele Gruver. He attended Orange schools and was reared in the Baptist faith. He served in the US Navy during Warld War II and later married Nellwyn Williams celebrating 45 years together before her death in 1988. He worked as an oilfield consultant across the South and internationally in Saudi Arabia. He was preceded in death by his wife; brothers Cecil, Ivy and Allen Gruver and a sister Grances Biggers.
Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law Deborah Gruver of Carthage and Cheryl and Don Perdue of Manhattan NY; brother and sister-in-law Ernest and Lethea Gruver of Gilmer; sisters and brothers-in-law Irene and Jim Cleary of Kilgore; Jessie and Ira Runnels of Sour Lake; grandson Adam Gruver of Carthage; nieces Fern Finley of Port Arthur and Myrtle Love of Nederland; numerous other nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

He received the National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He was a retired welder and was preceded in death by his parents/, brothers Jerry Hall (twin), B. T. Hall and his sister Ouida Bates.

Services for Mary Alice Kuhn, 80, of Longview will be held at 10 a.m. today, Dec. 3, at the Welch Funeral and Memorial Center Chapel, 4619 Judson Road. Burial will be held at noon in Youngblood Cemetery near Beckville. Mrs. Kuhn died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, in a local hospital.Mrs. Kuhn was born Jan. 13, 1921, to Joe Mills and Princess Smith in Beckville. She was employed by Consolidated Aircraft during World War II building B-24 bombers. She retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. after 38 years as an operator. Mrs. Kuhn was a member of Wesley McCabe United Methodist Church and had been a resident of Longview since 1964.
Mrs. Kuhn is survived by her brother, Joe Cullen Smith of Longview; two nephews, Bill Tullis of Tyler and Brad Tullis; two nieces, Kay Benton of Fort Worth and Pattie LeJeune of Everman; and one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bess and Carrel Harding of Fort Worth.
The family received friends 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the funeral and memorial center.

Born Dec 17, 2921 in Panola County, she was the daughter of Clyde and Anabel Holland Woodyard. She was married to George Woodrow Cox who preceded her in death on Nov 15, 1996. They were the owners of Cox's Jewelry in Carthage for 45 years retiring in 1990. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was also preceded in death by her sister, Margorie Ann Woodyard.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Jim and Donna Cox of Carthage; grandchildren Andrea Harkrider of Athens GA, Adam Harkrider of College Station and Alex Harkrider of Carthage; cousin Martha Ann Arnold of Carthage.

Born Sep 30, 1906 in Nacogdoches County, she was the daughter of Tom B. and Florence Strahan Springer. She was in the ministry from 1938 until her retirement in 1955. She had lived in Gary for more than 79 years and was a member of the First Assembly of God in Carthage.
She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon Collins who died Feb 28, 1986, sisters Zeffie Bristor and Donnie Oliver and brothers M.C. Springer and Jack Springer.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Joyce and Bobby Reider of Gary, sister Jo Hennigan of Merryville LA; grandchildren and their spouses LaWanda and Tony Book of Red Oak, David Reider of Houston and Curtis and Necia Reider of McKinney; three great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Born Dec 26, 1932 in Logansport LA he was the son of Agnew Lorene Farmer Andrews and the late Archie Elijah Andrews. He went to work at an early age in a sawmill. He wed Carmen Jean Rogers and they celebrated 25 years on marriage. He was employed as a truck driver for many years and was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Marshall. He loved to sing and play gospel music and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus of Marshall. He played the guitar in clubs in Marshall and also loved hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother Charles Ray Andrews.
Survivors include his mother Agnes Lorene Andrews of Carthage, wife Carmen Andrews of Kilgore; sons and daughter-in-law Don and Sherry Andrews of Denver CO and Jimmy Dean Andrews of Palestine; brothers and sisters-in-law Harold and Linda Andrews of Kilgore, Billy Don and Wendy Andrews of Henderson and Donnie and Judy Andrews all of Carthage.
Also surviving Andrews are sisters and brothers-in-law Carolyn Hodge of Carthage, Janie and Bruce Grubbs of Henderson, Evonne Tankersley of Kilgore and Nancy and Sam Newman of the Midyett Community; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

CARTHAGE - Graveside services for Virginia LaRena Sader, 69, of Carthage will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, in Mound Grove Cemetery in Independence, Mo., with Don and Jan Keairnes officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Jimerson Funeral Home. Mrs. Sader passed away at her residence Friday evening, Nov. 16, 2001, after a lengthy illness.Mrs. Sader was born May 10, 1932, in Independence, Mo., to Kenneth Arlando and Margaret Darlynn Harrington Morford. Mrs. Sader married Ralph Edward Sader on March 13, 1954, in Independence, where they made their home until 1992, at which time they moved to the Carthage area.
Mrs. Sader was employed for five years as a secretary for Trinity in Longview. She was a loving wife and mother and will be missed by all. Mrs. Sader was a member of the Community of Christ Church in White Oak and a NON Club member at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa.
Loving survivors include her husband, Ralph Edward Sader; one son, Michael Lee Sader of Andrews; two daughters, Terri Lynn Coleman of Pevely, Mo., and Barbara Ann Goodmote of Pasadena; her father, Kenneth Arlando Morford of Simi Valley, Calif.; one brother, Kenneth Arlando Morford Jr. of Independence, Mo.; two sisters, Betty Jo Grant of Independence, Mo., and Audrey Jean Pederson of Odessa; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Sader was preceded in death by her mother and one sister.
Serving as pallbearers will be Max Ridings, Earl Koonce, Donald Goodmote, Chad Griffen, Boyd Griffen and Paul Gage.
At a later date, a memorial service for Mrs. Sader will be held at the Community of Christ Church in White Oak.

Born May 18, 1932 in St. Louis, Mo., he was the son of William Joseph and Johanna Friedman Eckel Sr. He attended Lutheran Schools in St. Louis, and married Ethel Blankenship. They celebrated 46 years of marriage. He served his country from 1953 to 1955 in the United States Army. He worked as a construction supervisor and was a member of the Abundant Life Church. He loved fishing and woodworking, and was preceded in death by his son, Harry Joseph; and a brother, William Eckel, Jr.

Born May 28, 1964 in Tampa, Fla., she was the daughter of Donald Lee and Sandra Bernice Mills Knighton. She graduated from Carthage High School with the Class of 1983, and later moved to Phoenix, Arizona where she met and married Bobby Akey. They celebrated more than 10 years of marriage before he preceded her in death of October 5, 1998.
In the early morning hours of Nov. 5, 2001 she lost her fight with cancer. She fought with courage and optimism to the end. Never letting on that she was in pain, she was always chipper and was an inspiration to all she met. She will forever be in the hearts of her family and friends.

Born Feb. 24, 1930 in Orange, she was the daughter of Dora Rudolph and Hermie Lee Robinson Harris. She was reared in Panola County where she met and married her late husband, Junior Harris. They moved to Houston in 1952 where she worked for the Spring Branch School District at Valley Oaks Elementary School.
They moved back to the Buncombe Community in 1974 at which time she started working for Panola Junior College in the cafeteria department until she retired in 1985. She was a loving mother, sister and friend to all who knew her. She attended Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a sister, Janice Almany.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney and Nanette Hall, and David and Goldie Hall, all of Carthage, and Larry and Joann Hall, of San Marcos; daughter, Barbara Brewer, of Carthage; brothers and sisters-in-law, Hooper and Carolyn Harris, of Carthage, and Tommy and Laura Harris, of Center.

Mr. Brannon died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, in Carthage.Mr. Brannon was born Dec. 27, 1907, in Gary to John Alvin and Mae Alice Woodfin Brannon. He was schooled in Gary and reared in the First Baptist Church of Gary, where he served as a deacon for more than 35 years. Mr. Brannon married Vesta Clara Graves and they celebrated 67 years of marriage before her death. He owned and operated the Brannon Appliance Store for many years. Mr. Brannon loved the outdoors, where he spent time fishing and squirrel hunting.
Mr. Brannon is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his stepmother, Gertrude Whitaker Brannon; his son, Ben Aubrey Brannon; his daughter-in-law, Marcella Brannon; three brothers, Lloyd, J.B. and Abe Brannon; and four sisters, Eurist and Clara Brannon, Gertie Lee Wells and Lorene Adams.
Mr. Brannon is survived by two grandchildren, Mark Brannon and his wife, Maria, of Beaumont and Benay Brannon of Lake Murvaul; four great-grandchildren, Jessica Brannon of Lafayette, La., Amanda Strohmeyer of Lake Murvaul, Allen Brannon and Mariegrace Brannon, both of Beaumont; his aunts and uncles, James Brannon of Shreveport, Jack Brannon and his wife, June, of Slidell, La., and Martha Ellen Brannon; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

FURRH, John Dewitt Jr.
MARSHALL - John Dewitt Furrh Jr. was born Dec. 14, 1909, in Carthage. He was the first son of John Dewitt and Zuma Perkins Furrh of Elysian Fields. He is a fourth generation son of Harrison County. He died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, in Marshall Regional Center after a lengthy illness.His paternal great-grandfather, John Furrh (1821-1898) and his wife, Jane Graham Furrh (1821-1904) settled near Elysian Fields more than 100 years ago in the fall of 1858. John Furrh, his son, James Madison Furrh (1845-1935) and a brother-in-law, Thomas A. Steele, started the Furrh Store in Elysian Fields in 1866.
Judge Furrh was reared in Elysian Fields and attended Elysian Fields public schools from 1915 to 1925. As valedictorian of his high school class, he received his undergraduate degree from the Schreiner Institute in Kerrville in 1927. He attended the University of Texas, where he received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in 1933 and his law degree in 1936. He was a student representative on the athletic council and a member of the order of San Jacinto. He played freshman and varsity football and lettered on the Longhorn football team in 1931 and 1932. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the Friar Society of Texas. He received his Master of Law degree from the Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Mass., in 1938.
He married Mary Elizabeth McMurry Furrh of Spearman on March 19, 1933.
From 1937 to 1939, Mr. Furrh practiced law in Longview and Carthage. He served as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the U.S. Department of Justice from 1939 to 1945. Following the war, he practiced general law in Reno, Nev., from 1945 to 1954 and returned to Marshall in 1955 to a private law practice. He was elected County Judge of Harrison County in 1962 and served two terms from 1963 to 1967. He resigned as County Judge in 1968 to run for District Judge of Gregg and Harrison counties. In 1968, he was elected District Judge of the 71st Judicial District. He retired from the bench in 1979.
Active in Republican politics since 1948, he was the first elected Republican judge in Harrison County since Reconstruction. He was a chairman of finance for Washoe County, Nev., Republican party in 1952, as well as a delegate to the county and state Republican conventions in Nevada and the alternate delegate to the National Republican Convention from the State of Nevada in 1952. He was the Harrison County delegate to the Texas State Republican Convention from 1956 to 1968. Mr. Furrh was the Texas delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1960, 1964 and 1968.
Judge Furrh was a member of the Harrison County Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, the State Bar of Nevada and the American Bar Association and was a former president of the Harrison County Bar Association in 1963 and the former president of the Washoe County Bar Association in 1950 in Reno, Nev. He was a fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, a member of the American Judicature Society and the Society of Former Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Judge Furrh served as chairman of the Board of the Elysian Fields Independent School District from 1957 to 1962. He served on the executive committee of Memorial Hospital from 1957 to 1960. He served as Juvenile Judge and as a member of the Harrison County Juvenile Board from 1963 to 1968 and also on the Gregg County Juvenile Board. He had been a lecturer from 1966 to 1967 at the East Texas Municipal Police Academy and LeTourneau College.
He was a member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity, the Phi Delta Theta Alumnae Association, the University of Texas T-Association, the University of Texas Alumnae Association, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, 32nd Degree Mason and the Golden Rule Presbyterian Church in Elysian Fields.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Furrh; one son and daughter-in-law, James Madison and Gail Furrh; two daughters and one son-in-law, Mary Zuma Furrh and Rafael Gomez and Mindy Jane Furrh Jay; six grandchildren, Heather Leigh Furrh Rasmussen, Sean Madison Furrh, Michael Shepherd Furrh, Molly Elizabeth Gomez, Mary Alexis Jay and Skye Kathleen Jay; and three great-grandchildren, Annabelle Elizabeth Furrh, Sofia Marie Furrh and Jakob Madison Rasmussen.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Austin Street Chapel of Sullivan Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elysian Fields.
Pallbearers will be Sean Madison Furrh, Michael Shepherd Furrh, Rafael Gomez, James Brooke Furrh Jr., William Kirkpatrick Furrh Jr., Bjarne Rasmussen and James Roberson. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert F. Rosborough, Barry Rudd, Sam Cooke and Bill Huffman.

She was a member of the First Christian Church for over 50 years and a member of the Hooker Circle. Mrs. Reynolds was a loving homemaker and avid gardener of beautiful things. She is preceded in death by her husband; brothers, John and Jimmy Holley; sisters, Ola Mae Bayles. Survivors: Loving son, Bobby Reynolds of Houston, Texas; sister, Janiece Brand of Enterprise, Alabama; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was an active member of the Forest Home Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. Mr. Fowler served as a chairman of the deacons during the 2000-2001 term. He was a member of the Sanctuary Sunday School Class. Mr. Fowler was employed with Halliburton Services for 37 years. He retired in 1998 as a maintenance supervisor.
Mr. Fowler is survived by his wife, Wanda Fowler of Kilgore; one daughter, Rhonda Fowler of Kilgore; his mother, Mary Fowler of Pittsburg; one nephew, Greg Dickens of Carthage; one niece, Cheryl Nixon; and several aunts and cousins.
The family received friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at the funeral home.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Craig is survived by his wife of 51 years, Pat Craig of Longview; his daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Chuck Jamison of Tyler and Connie and Steve Dorman of Longview; and his son and daughter-in-law James and Kathy Craig of Plano. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Emily Jamison, Adam Jamison, Will Jamison and Elizabeth Jamison all of Tyler; Kelli Sellers and her husband Mark of Longview, Linsey Dorman of Longview and Paige Craig of Plano. He was born Oct 5, 1917 in Panola County TX to William Lee and Jennie Mae (Jones) Morton.
Mr. Morton graduated from Tatum High School and attended Sam Houston State College for two years. He served in the US Navy during World War II and married Evelyn Marie Capps on Aug 26, 1950 in Texarkana AR. He was a machinist for Libbey Owens of Shreveport, working for 32 years and 11 months. He was a Methodist, a member of the American Legion and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife Marie Morton of Gladewater; three daughters Nelwyn Morton of Tyler, Cindy Morton of Houston and Cheryl Fulton of Mooresville NC; one son James Morton of Gladewater; four grandchildren Jeffrey Freeman of Gladewater, Brian Freeman of Gladewater, Sandra Mallox of Houston and Chase Fulton of Mooresville; a sister Freida Schenk of San Antonio.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Gayle Freeman.

Later in life, on July 11, 1998, he married Ms Elizabeth Odum Starling and no children were born to this union.

Funeral services for Chief Deputy J. B. Jones, 54, of Carthage, will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 22, 2001 at Bethlehem Baptist Church. The Rev. John B. Claiborne will officiate. Burial will follow in Shady Grove Cemetery in Long Branch under the direction of Jimerson Funeral Home. A tribute service was held Friday, Sept. 21, 2001 at the funeral home chapel. He died Wednesday in a Longview hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born June 25, 1947 in Carthage, he was the son of Jewel and Cardy Mae Delaney Jones. He was a life long resident of Carthage, and was a 1965 graduate of Turner High School. He also attended Panola Junior College, and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970. While in the Air Force he obtained the rank of sergeant, served as a security police officer, and completed a tour of duty in Vietnam.
After an Honorable Discharge, he worked for ALCOA in Scottsville from 1970 to 1983. He joined the Panola County Sheriff's Office in 1985 as a patrol deputy, became a lieutenant in the Criminal Investigation Division in 1987, and in 1997 he became a chief deputy.
During his years with the Panola County Sheriff's Office he received certification in the following areas of law enforcement: Master Peace Officers Certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, member of the Regional Organized Crime Information Center, member of the Chief Deputies Association of Texas, and a member of the Deputy Sheriff's Association of Texas.
He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Carthage where he served as a deacon and taught the adult Sunday school class. His involvement with his church family was unlimited and he made a practice of assisting in anyway that was helpful to any person. All will miss his activeness in the church and community. He was a member of Kiwanis Club, president of the Turner Association, board member of Boys and Girls Club, a member of the United Way, and a member of Habitat for Humanity. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Charles Jones.
Survivors include his wife, Clara Simpson Jones, of Carthage; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Ronette Jones, of El Centro, Calif., daughter, Tasha Jones, of Dallas; mother, Cardie Mae Jones, of Carthage; brothers and sisters-in-law, Freddie and Elizabeth Jones, of Carthage, Kenneth Jones, of Marshall, and Ronny Jones, of Longview; sisters-in-law, Ouida and husband, Andre' Robert (Bob) Simon, of Kennewick, Wash., Diane and husband, Welton Sanders, of Houston, Barbara and husband, Oliver Hicks, of Carthage, and Betty Jones of Longview.
Also surviving Jones are his grandchildren, Rozland, Jazmin, Jerdazone (Joe) and Alysia who was raised by, adored and loved very much by her grandfather; mother-in-law, Pearlene Davis, of Long Branch; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Pallbearers will be members of the Panola County Sheriff's Department, and Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Barry Washington. Honorary pallbearers will be Freddie Jones, Kenneth Jones, Ronny Jones, Andre' Robert (Bob) Simon, Welton Sanders Jr. and Oliver Hicks.

Mr. Lumpkin loved to fish and hunt.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Lumpkin, in 1996.

Moore died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, in Longview.Reuben Earl Moore was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Gary to Reuben Clay and Annie Belle Jeffress Moore. He attended schools in Gary, graduating with the class of 1939. Earl served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He married Aleese Stone on Jan. 30. 1940, and together they celebrated 61 years of marriage. He worked in the grocery business managing both Brookshire Bros. and Piggly Wiggly. Earl also managed Cassity Jones Lumber Co. and the Carthage Tractor Co.
The Rev. Moore was a devoted minister, serving churches throughout East Texas. He preached his first sermon at the First Baptist Church in Carthage, which he felt was his home church. The Rev. Moore served Good Hope in Timpson, Old Center Baptist Church in Old Center, Northside Baptist in Center, Central Baptist in Haskell, First Baptist and Landmark Baptist in Cushing, Walnut Street Baptist in Winnsboro, Shady Grove Baptist in the Shady Grove community and he was presently serving as interim pastor of Bethel Baptist is Clayton. He served on the local district draft board. The Rev. Moore devoted his life to God and serving his fellow man.
The Rev. Moore is survived by his loving wife, Aleese Moore of Carthage; one son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Bobby and Sue Moore of Longview; one daughter and son-in-law, Jere and Jackie Brewster of Longview; one brother and sister-in-law, J.B. and Elsie Moore of Carthage; five grandchildren and their spouses, David and Pamela Moore and Jason and Kimberly Moore, all of Longview, Scott Moore of Dallas, Melinda and Tript Tidwell of Longview and Lisa and Kevin Dykes of Forney; six great-grandchildren, Casey, Jake, Micah, Maddie, Brandon and Matthew; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Pallbearers will be David Moore, Scott Moore, Jason Moore, Casey Moore, Lisa Dykes, Kevin Dykes, Tript Tidwell and Melinda Tidwell.

Mr. Sherman is survived by his wife Maria of Tatum; two daughters and sons-in-law Sandy and Jose Luis Morales of Longview and Gernadette and Gerardo Romo of Tatum; one son Donald Edward Sherman, Jr. of San Marcos; two grandchildren Jacob and Ashley Morales; one brother James Sherman of Longview; four sisters Linda Sherman of Chicago, Loretta Eberheart of Luddington MI and Jeanine Harding of Fort Worth, also several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Pauline Chambless, Age 86 of Houston formerly of Carthage, Texas. Services will be held at 1:00p.m. Thursday, September 6, 2001 at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David Uth Officiating. Interment will be in the Restland Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Mrs. Chambless died September 2, 2001 in Houston, Texas.Mrs. Pauline Chambless was born December 26, 1914 in Strong, Arkansas to Willie and Mattie Lee Moore Brillhart. Pauline attended school in El Dorado Arkansas, She wed Shelby R. Chambless on March 30, 1939 and together they celebrated over 60 years of marriage before his death in March of 2000. Mrs. Chambless was a homemaker and a member of Central Baptist Church. She had traveled extensively through South America. Pauline was a devoted mother and grandmother. Mrs. Chambless had a green thumb and always maintained a beautiful yard.
She is preceded in death by a daughter; Susan Kay Chambless; brother: Willard Brillhart: sisters; Maxola McCauley and Mary Lee Hendricks.

Funeral services for Hugh Derron Hall, 76, of Gary, were held Monday, Sept. 3, 2001 at Lipsey Family Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. John W. Gradberg and Duane Turner officiated. Burial followed in Gary Cemetery under the direction of Lipsey Family Funeral Home. He died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001 in the Overton Brooks Veterans Administration Hospital in Shreveport.Born Feb. 19, 1925 in Gary, he was the son of Justus L. and Gracie Graves Hall. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, and was a lifelong resident of Panola County. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gary and the Carthage V.F.W. He married Dixie June Weseman on Jan. 25, 1948 in Carthage, and was preceded in death by his brothers, John L., Junior, Kenneth (Jakie), and Jackie Hall; and sisters, Mattie Claris and Juanita Hall Akin.
Survivors include his wife, Dixie June Weseman Hall, of Gary; daughters and sons-in-law, Martha Ann and Jimmy Saucier, of Washington, LA, Carol Sue and Tony White, of Amarillo, and Brenda Kay and Larry Cranford, of Gary; sons and daughters-in-law, James Thomas (Buddy) and Debra Hall, of Carthage, and Hugh Glen and Brenda Hall, and Johnny and Bobbie Hall, all of Carthage; sister and brother-in-law, Ioan and Frank Crow, of Angleton; and half-brother, Bailey Hall, of Houston.
Also surviving Hall are his grandchildren, Howard Stephen Teer, of Pensacola, Fla, Joe Teer, Hattiesburg, Miss, Andy White, of Siloam Springs, Ark, Jenny (White) Chambers, of Tulsa, Okla., Casie Cranford, of Carthage, LaMar Hall and Angela and Matthew Hall, all of Gary; Casie Waller, of Los Angeles, Calif., Lisa Dawn (Hall) Glidewell, and Rusty Dwain Hall, both of Carthage; great-grandchildren, Sondra, Scarlet and Silvia Teer, of Pensacola, Stephenie Teer, of Hattiesburg, and Kaitlyn Glidewell, of Carthage; many nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were his grandsons: LaMar Hall, Matthew Hall, Charles Glidewell, Tracy Teer, Joe Teer, and Andy White. Honorary pallbearers were Rodney Hall, Larry Hall, David Hall, and Rusty Hall.

KENNEDY, Windal Calvin
Funeral services for Windal Calvin Kennedy, 54, of Carthage, were held Sunday Sept. 2, 2001 at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Larry Hutto officiated. Burial followed in Rehobeth Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. He died Friday August 31, 2001 in Carthage.Born Sept. 2, 1947 in Bogalusa, LA, he was the son of James Austin and Elsie Williams Kennedy. He attended State High School in Angie, LA, graduating with the class of 1965. He married Angeles Mendoza Musngi celebrating many years of marriage. He served in the Air Force as a Military Policeman who trained Canine dogs.
He was employed as a supervisor with Texas Utilities in maintenance and operations. He was a member of Stateline Baptist Church in Mississippi, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding in the river bottom. He was preceded in death by his father, James Austin Kennedy.
Survivors include his mother, Elsie Morton, of Slidell, LA; wife, Angeles Kennedy, of Carthage; son and daughter-in-law, Paul Calvin and Dawn Kennedy, of Carthage; daughter, Angeles Kennedy, of Carthage; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Polly Kennedy, of Gulf Port, Miss., and Kindal and Jamie Kennedy, of Angie, LA; sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Delaine Stockstill, of Bogalusa; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Heather, Kristen, and Paul; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Pallbearers were Larry Milligan, Barney Himes, Ed Tillman, Eddie Tillman, James Cox, Travis Smith, and Larry McQuaid.

Graveside services for infant Christopher Micheal Leeth, one month old, of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, relative of several Panola County residents, were held Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001 in Panola Mt. Zion Cemetery. The Rev. Thumper Miller officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. He died August 29, 2001 in Pensacola, Florida.Born July 8, 2001 at Eglin Air Force Base in Ft. Walton Beach, he was the son of Timothy Brian and Crystal Boyd Leeth. He was a sweet baby, who was loved and will be missed by all.
Survivors include his parents, Timothy and Crystal Leeth, of Ft. Walton Beach; sister, Shyan Allison Leeth, of Ft. Graveside services for T. M. Nichols, 56, of Carthage, were held Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001 in Panola Mt. Zion Cemetery. The Rev. Pete Williams officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. He died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001 in Longview.Born Sept. 25, 1944 in Carthage, he was the son of Thomas Monterrey Jr. and Nettie Lee Cole Nichols. He was reared in the Baptist faith, and graduated from Carthage schools. He worked as a machinist for LeTourneau, and was a member of DeBerry Baptist Church. He was a talented oil painter, and loved working in his gardens of flowers and vegetables.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Alma Nichols, and Cary and Sherri Nichols, all of Gladewater, and Kirk and Debra Nichols, of North Carolina; daughters and son-in-law, Angel Nichols, and Misty and Mike McCoy, all of Gladewater; sisters and brother-in-law, Billie Nell Longshore, of Carthage, and Hazel Fern and Jimmy Hughes, of Ft. Worth; 13 grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
