CRAWFORD, Loy Dean

  Services for Loy Dean Crawford, 63, of Tatum were held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, October 21, 2002, at Thompson Funeral Home with the Reverend Jerry Don Ward officiating. Burial was at Tatum City Cemetery. Mr. Crawford died Thursday, October 17, 2002 in Tatum.
  Mr. Crawford was born April 18, 1939 in Ben Wheeler. He was a truck driver for Mack Trucks. Mr. Crawford was a Methodist and was in the U.S. Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hallie Bishop Crawford; his parents, Carl O'Neal and Edithe Crawford; one sister, Jo Crawford King; and one brother, Jerry Ross Curry.
  Survivors include tow brothers, Thomas O'Neal Crawford and his wife Sandi of Glen Rose, and Patrick Dale "Bubba" Crawford and his wife Charlene of Beaumont; three sisters, Ronell Crawford Stockton and husband Louis of Mixon, Shelby Crawford Grimes of Tyler, and Patricia McKnight and husband Hugh of Richardson; and a special friend, Ramona Pugh of Longview.

HEMBY, Thomas Gilchrist "Buster"

  Funeral services for Thomas Gilchrist "Buster" Hemby, 79, of Tatum were held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 24, 2002 at Tatum United Methodist Church with the Reverend David Banks officiating. Interment followed at Tatum City Cemetery. Mr. Hemby died Tuesday, October 22, 2002 in Longview. Arrangements were under the direction of Jimerson Funeral Home in Carthage.
  Mr. Hemby was born on December 4, 1922 to Thomas G. and Mary Moss Hemby in Tatum. Mr. Hemby was a retired vocational agriculture teacher, having taught at Trinity High School and New London-West Rusk Schools. He graduated from Tatum High School in 1940 and received a B.S. Degree from Sam Houston State College in 1947. While at Trinity Mr. Hemby organized and served as president of the Trinity Community Fair. He also served as president of the Trinity Chamber of Commerce. A past president of the London Loins Club, Mr. Hemby served his community in varied youth and adult activities. He headed the Overton young Farmers' Group and was an officer of the Rusk County Cattleman's Association. In 1970 the Texas Forestry Association honored Mr. Hemby by naming him "Tree Farmer of the Year." At West Rusk I.S.D. he announced home football games and became known as the "Voice of the Raiders."
  Mr. Hemby was a World War II veteran, having served his country in the Army Air Force in the Philippines and occupied Japan. He was a Methodist and past member of the Methodist Men. He was a member of the London Ex-Students' Reunion-Memorial Association and the Retired Vocational Agriculture Teachers of Texas, Area VI.
  Loving survivors include his wife Mary Hemby of Tatum; son Jay Hemby and wife Lisa of Highland Village; daughter Linda McKenzie and husband Terry of Irving; grandson Casey Childress and wife Shanna; granddaughter Savannah Hemby; and great-granddaughter Jayde Childress. His parents, brother William Hemby, and aunt Mary Lizzie Martin preceded him in death.
  Those serving as pallbearers were Billy Mims, Bill Dugan, Billy Vernon, Bobby Benbow, Sherman Smith and Lewis Summers.

HICKEY, Agnes Pepper

  Services for Agnes Pepper Hickey, 79, of DeBerry were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 20, 2002, at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Mervin Scott officiating. Burial was at Cool Springs Cemetery in DeSoto Parish, La. Mrs. Hickey, a longtime member of Midyette Baptist Church, died Friday, October 18, 2002, in Carthage.
  She was born February 17, 1923 in Tatum to Wilson and Pearl Jimmerson Pepper. She attended schools in Tatum and Carthage, graduating with the "Class of 1939." She wed Curtis Hickey April 19, 1944 and together they celebrated 38 years of marriage before he preceded her in death in 1982. Mrs. Hickey was also preceded in death by four sisters Gladys Farrell, Ruby Pepper, Virgie Williams, and Mary Belle Berryman and a brother, Willis Pepper.
  Mrs. Hickey is survived by son Gary Hickey and wife Brigitte of DeBerry; grandchildren Shawn Hickey and wife Angela of Shreveport, Ryan Hickey of Dallas; great granddaughter Samantha Hickey; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
  Pallbearers were Shawn Hickey, Ryan Hickey, Darrell Williams, Jack Williams, Garth LaGrone and T.J. Wooten.

HUDSON, Lucille Parker

  Services for Lucille Parker Hudson, 80, of Marshall were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2002, at the Travis Street Chapel of Sullivan Funeral Home with the Reverend Glen Ketchum and Virgil Wilson officiating. Interment followed in Colonial Gardens. Mrs. Hudson died Monday, October 14, 2002, in Pine Hill Nursing Home in Jefferson.
  She was born March 10, 1922 in Panola County to William Coffee Parker and Nina Metcalf Parker. She received her education in the Elysian Fields public schools. In April of 1958, she married Robert Hudson in Lone Star. She was a homemaker, and she was of the Nazarene faith.
  Mrs. Hudson is survived by her husband; four daughters and son-in-laws, Barbara and Jerry Dickerson of Karnack, Tina Grindle and Jerry Joe of Tatum, Laura Prock and Eddie Miranda of Austin, and Jeannie and Ray Ansley of Willis; seven grandchildren, Tammy Colley, James Holley, Rony Martin, Lisa Lopez, Christopher Porterfield, Lindsey Grindle and James Grindle; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother and sister, William C. "Bud" and Nell Parker of Woodlawn; and several nieces.
  Mrs. Hudson was preceded in death by one son, Robert Hudson, and one sister, Mae Capps.

JENNINGS, Linda Jean

  Graveside services for Linda Jean Jennings, 50, of Tatum were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 13, 2002, in Harris Chapel Cemetery with the Reverend Roy Culley and the Reverend Gary Orr officiating. Services were under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Mrs. Jennings died Friday, October 11, 2002, at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview.
  Mrs. Jennings was born January 19, 1952, in Roswell,, New Mexico, at Walker Air Force Base to Elmer Arthur and Elizabeth Jane Shank Mayfield. She started schools in Germany as an "Army brat" and graduated from Longview High School with the class of 1970. On February 11, 1980, she married Stephen Jennings, and together they celebrated 22 years of marriage.
  Linda loved and cared for many animals and her flower gardens.
  She was preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Jane Shank Mayfield; brother, Elmer Arthur Mayfield, Jr.; and infant son, Arthur R. Foster.
  Survivors include her grandmother, Hazel Booth of Beckville; her father, Elmer Mayfield and his wife, Gloria, of Beckville; her husband, Stephen Jennings of Tatum; one daughter, Misty Jennings of Dallas; six sisters, June Grattan of Salt Lake City, Ruth Parker and her husband, Lance, of Huntington, Sandra Garcia of Pampa, Deborah Guillotte and her husband, Richard, of Jacksonville, Briley Dailey and her husband, Bill, of Beckville and Glynna Reser and her husband, Kevin, of Boerne; an uncle, Jack Booth and his wife, Joanna, of Beckville; great uncle, Dennis Mayfield and his wife, Nell, of Marshall; three aunts, Dottie Rostawiche of Pineville, La., Cindy Ilharreguy of Anaheim, Calif., and Bertha Mayfield of Santa Fe, N.M.; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

SIMPSON, Bobby Neal

  Services for Bobby Neal Simpson, 24, of Henderson were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 12, 2002, at the Welch Funeral & Memorial Center Chapel with Brother Kenneth Ross and Brother Cody Ross officiating. Following the funeral service was a Garden Court Committal Service. Burial was in Tatum Cemetery. Mr. Simpson died Wednesday, October 9,2002 in Kilgore.
  Mr. Simpson was born January 28, 1978, to Mitchell and Della Gibson Simpson in Henderson. He was a loving husband and father. Mr. Simpson, an all state football player, graduated from Tatum High School in 1996. He served in the United States Navy.
  Mr. Simpson is survived by his wife, Amy Simpson of Henderson; daughters, Madison and Kennedi Simpson of Henderson; mother and step-father, Della and Bret Modisette of Grand Prairie; father and step-mother, Mitchell and Kathy Simpson of Tatum; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gene and Sue Blount of Henderson; brother, Daniel Simpson of Henderson; and sisters, Ashley and Suzanna Simpson of Tatum; grandparents, Joe and Dorothy Gibson of Henderson; Grandmother, Mary Sue Grisham of Tyler; uncles, Kelly Simpson, Mike Simpson, MarJay Grisham; aunt, Connie Simpson; nephew, Cade Blount; and brother and sister-in-law, Cody and Heather Blount of Longview; and numerous friends.

HATHAWAY, Josh William Sr.

  Funeral services for Josh William Hathaway, Sr., 30, of Longview, were held on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Grange Hall Cemetery in Harrison County. Funeral services were under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home of Marshall. Hathaway was born April 30, 1972 in Longview and died Sept. 2, 2002 in Harrison County.
  Hathaway was the son of Lou Wallace Hathaway of Longview and Marcus Hathaway of Palestine. His early education was in the Beckville schools and he later attended school in Longview. On July 28, 1991 in Panola County, he married Laura Brooks.
  He is survived by his parents, his wife Laura of Longview, a daughter Samantha Hathaway and a son Josh Hathaway, Jr. both of Longview; two brothers Robert Hathaway of Amarillo and Doug Hathaway of Longview.

BURKS, Elbert D.

  Graveside services for Elbert D. Burks, 79, of Marshall, formerly of Carthage were held at 11 am on May 25, 2002 in Kilgore City Cemetery. The Rev. C.F. Shirey officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Grubbs-Lloyd Funeral Hom in Gilmer. He died May 22, 2002 in Marshall.
  Born on April 27, 1923 in Malvern AR, he was the son of Calvin and Jannie Burks. He was of the Baptist faith and was a production foreman for Texaco. He was married to Nazarine Gossett for 58 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his daughter Lucille Vickry; his parents; brothers Laughton, Clayton and Chester and a sister Lucille.
  Survivors include his wife Nazarine Burks of Marshall; son and daughter-in-law Kenneth and Janie Burks of Diana; grandchildren Becky and Jon Cross of Allen; Allen Powell of Dallas and Michael and Christi Burks of Diana; great grandchildren Justin and Jason Cross and Dalton Burks.

CRAWFORD, Ruby Mae Hussey

  Funeral services for Ruby Mae Crawford, 93, of Carthage, were held on May 23, 2002 at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Cedar Yard Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. She died May 22, 2002 in Carthage.
  Born April 20, 1909 in Shelby County, she was the daughter of O.C. and Elizabeth Amason Hussey. After graduating from high school, she attended Stephen F. Austin State University where she worked as a librarian. She wed Harvey Crawford who preceded her in death. She was employed as a store clerk in the Tenaha area for several years. She was a member of the Tennessee Presbyterian Church and was preceded in death by her sister Della Olvia Whitson.
  Survivors include her nephew and his wife Ed and Maren H. Corbitt of Woodbridge VA; numerous other nieces and nephews and a special friend Bid Nutt and his wife Lyndine of Carthage.

JONES, Mike

  Funeral services for Mike Jones, 46, of Chalk Hill, son-in-law of Carthage resident Sue Soape, were held on May 24, 2002 at Crawford-A. Crim Funeral Home Chapel in Henderson. The Revs. Trey Roberson, Kenneth Nichols and Don Rivers officiated. Burial followed in Duncan Cemetery. He died on May 21, 2002.
  Born August 22, 1955 in Mt. Pleasant, he was the son of Leon and Loretta Jones. He was a resident of Chalk Hill and the owner/president of Tatum West Inc. He was married to Lisa Ilene Jones for eight years. He was on the board of directors at Long Glade Lake where he lived, a past member of the Tatum Volunteer Fire Department and A.S.E. Certified Master Mechanic.
  Survivors include his wife, Lisa Ilene Jones of Chalk Hill; daughter and son-in-law Aimee and Wayne Griffith of Minden, son Michael Corey Jones of Longview; grandchildren Shelby Dalynn Pepper and Katelynn Victoria Griffith; parents Leon and Loretta Jones of Tatum; brother and sister-in-law Randy and Vanessa Jones of Tatum; brother Bobby Jones of Tatum; sister and brother-in-law Lorrie and James Pitre of Longview, numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

SMITH, Robert F. Sr.

  Funeral services for Robert F. Smith, Sr., 75, of Carthage, were held on May 25, 2002 at Pine Grove Baptist Church in the Hollands Quarters Community west of Carthage. The Rev. Raymond Ridgeway and Bishop Hubert Owens officiated. Burial followed in Hollands Quarters Cemetery under the direction of Jenkins-Garmon Funeral Home. He died May 18, 2002 in Carthage.
  Born July 4, 1926 in Carthage he was the son of Henry and Bernice Brown Smith. He was an automobile detailer for McClean Cadillac in California for several years. He grew up and attended public school in the Holland Quarters Community and was a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church. He was married to the late Jerrel Dean Hicks Smith for 47 years and served as a PFC in the U.S. Army during World War II.
  He was stationed at Camp Beal in California where he received a WW II Victory Medal and an honorable discharge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jerrel Dean Smith; parents, sister Essie B. Pellum and his brother Delma Smith.
  Survivors include his sons Robert Fulton Smith, Jr., Ronney Lamar Smith and Graylin Smith all of Carthage, Jimmie Earl Smith of Santa Ana CA, Carl Fredrick Smith of Corona CA and Henry Tom Smith of Tahachopi CA; a daughter Berneice Smith-Brown of San Bernandina CA, 38 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren; sisters Cassie Brown and Verdell Carter both of Los Angeles CA; seven nieces, four nephews and many other relatives and friends.

SOLOMON, Harold Gene Sr.

  Funeral services for Harold Gene Solomon, Sr., 59, of Deer Park, were held on May 24, 2002 at the Woods United Methodist Church. The Rev. Allen Tilley officiated. Burial followed in Woods Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. He died on May 22, 2002 in Deer Park.
  Born on Nov. 16, 1942 in Beaumont, he was the son of Alfred Ashley and Bennie Nora League Solomon. He was a loving father and grandfather. He had been employed as an electrician at a chemical plant. He fought a courageous battle with lung cancer and generously offered a helping hand to those in need. He was deeply devoted to his family, his fierce loyalty to those he loved never wavered.
  Survivors include his best friend Ms. Tomme Warren; son and daughter-in-law Harold G.Jr. and Gloria Solomon of Houston; daughter and son-in-law Carolyn and Sammy "Bo" Masters of Baytown; brother J.A. Solomon of Houston; sisters and brothers-in-law Nora Dell and James Morris of Silsbee and Marilyn and J.P. Wells of Lumberton; grandchildren Taylor, Gabriella and Kellen Solomon, Samantha and Dirk Masters; special family friends Teresa, Luke and Sean Peyton and local survivors Lurline Wilson and family.

BRANNON, Jameston Rezin

  Funeral services for Jameston Rezin Brannon, 66, of Carthage, were held on May 17, 2002 at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Michael Powell, Bill O'Neal and Charles Hughes officiated. Burial followed in Gary Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. He died May 14, 2002 in Tyler.
  Born June 3, 1935 in Shreveport LA he was the son of the late Jameston Rezin, Sr. and Emma Collins Brannon. He graduated from Carthage High School with the class of 1953. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches and did doctoral research at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge LA. Honors include "Who's Who in the South and Southwest", "Who's Who in American Education", "Leaders in American Science", Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi.
  He married Jean Brannon on March 1, 1980. He was an instructor and demartment chairman of Biology at Panola College in Carthage for 32 years retiring in 1995. He was a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans Horace Randall Camp in Carthage and an associate member of Colonel George Madison Camp # 1205 in Colorado Springs CO and an endowment member of the National Rifle Association.
  Survivors include his wife Jean Brannon of Carthage; stepson and daughter-in-law Keith and Sarah Cahpman and children Jake and Nick Hardin of Tyler; grandchildren Keric Lane Chapman of Houston, Amanda Leigh Chapman Powell and Michael Powell both of Fort Worth; foster brother James Brannon and his son Gary Brannon of Shreveport; uncle Jack Brannon of Slidell LA; several cousins nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
  Pallbearers were Malcolm Alford, Ron Collier, Ronnie Wolfe, John Richard Pack, Mike Parker and Jackie Robinson. Honorary pallbearers were Pat Porter, Charles Hebert, Bill Hutto, Ron Harrell, Billy Willis, Jim Harris, Ron Davis, Paschall Hamblen, Ed Blitch, Jack Gibbons and Wellborn Jack.

MOORE, Dorothy Louise Lazarus

  Funeral services for Dorothy Louise "Sallie" Moore, 80, of Burleson, formerly of Carthage, were held at 10 am on May 18, 2002, at Lipsey Family Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Allen L. Tilley officiated. Burial followed in Oddfellows Cemetery in Carthage under the direction of Lipsey Family Funeral Home. She died May 16, 2002 in Burleson.
  Born on June 7, 1921 in Gibsland LA,she was the daughter of Pat Henry and Ketherine Heflin Lazarus. She was a homemaker and had lived in Burleson for one year with her daughter. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carthage and the Johnson County Iris and Daylily Society. She loved her home and family and her hobby was fishing. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, George Pierce Moore, who died on Feb. 14, 2001.
  Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law George Garland and Pat Moore os Azle and Sammy joe and Frances Lovett Moore of Flower Mound; daughter and son-in-law Susan and Nogie Lee Jones of Burleson; brother and sister-in-law Fred "Pete" and Joyce Lazarus of Waco; sister Helen Pate of Dallas; grandchildren and their spouses Alan Moore and Michael and Paula Moore, all of Englewood CO; Jodie and Randy Bratcher of Keller, Jill and Aaron Jacobs and Seth Jones all of Burleson and Kristi and Jonathon Williamson of Arlington; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

BROADAWAY, William Burl

  Funeral services for William Burl Broadaway, 74, of Carthage, were held at 10 am on May 22, 2002 at the Jimerson Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Steven Hill officiated. Burial followed in the Old Prospect Cemetery in Deadwood. He died on May 20, 2002 at his residence.
  Born Oct. 11, 1927 in Panola County, he was the son of William Burl, Sr. and Celia Mae Neighbors Broadaway. He spent most of his life in the Deadwood community and was married to the late Annie L. Broadaway. By profession he was a truck drives; however, his passion was for ranching and farming. He was a loving husband and father and he will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Claude Admiral Broaway and a sister Ellis Irene Coppedge.
  Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Billy and June M. Broadaway of Deadwood; daughters and son-in-law Martha "Marty" Broadaway of Deadwood and Loretta and Len Arnold of Carthage; sisters and brother-in-law Opal Hutchens and Mary and Marvin Walker all of Galloway; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Oleigh and Alton Bradshaw of Carthage and Dorothy and Charlie Burnett of Deadwood; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
  Service as pallbearers were Leonard Bierman, Arnold Walker, Kenneth Walker, Bobby Watson, John St. Clair and Richard Broadus. Honorary pallbearers were Walter Wilbanks, Hugh Barnett, Woodrow Colton and Bear Powell.

CAYCE, Margaret Catherine Wilson

  Funeral services for Margaret Catherine Cayce, 77, of Overton, mother of Carthage resident John Warwick Cayce, Jr., were held on May 21, 2002 in Overton Missionary Baptist Church. The Revs. Don McPherson and Dick Cayce officiated. Burial followed in Overton City Cemetery under the direction of Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home in Overton. She died on May 18, 2002 in a Tyler hospital.
  Born March 31, 1925 in Plano, she was the daughter of the late albert J. and Euila Mae Farmer Wilson. She married John W. Cayce, Sr. on Dec. 7, 1949 in Dallas and moved to Overton from Winnsboro in 1966. She was a homemaker and a faithful member of Overton Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Cayce, Sr. who died on Jan. 3, 1997 and her sister Polly Traylor.
  Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law John Warwick, Jr. and Terry Cayce of Carthage; daughter and son-in-law Cathy and James Roney of Overton; grandchildren Kelly, Kyle and Kayla Cayce and Nathan and Cheryl Roney and several nieces and nephews.

DUNCAN, Betty Sinclair

  Graveside services for Betty Sinclair Duncan, 68, of Gladewater, formerly of Henderson, sister of Carthage resident Arlene Cabanis, were held at 1 pm on May 23, 2002 in Davis Cemetery in Rusk County. Jackie Smart officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Bryan Funeral Home in Henderson. She died May 21, 2002 at Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview.
  Born on Nov. 16, 1933 in Mt. Vernon, she was the daughter of Morse and Blanche Sinclair. She was a homemaker and a member of Midway Church of Christ in Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her husband "Spike" Dewayne Duncan; her parents, two brothers and one son.
  Survivors include her daughters Katherine Knowles of Gladewater, Caroline Compton of Hallsville and Carol Hairgrove of Henderson; sisters Arlene Cabanis of Carthage and Gwendolyn Barnfield of Houston; brother Bill Sinclair of Rusk; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

STRONG, Nora Lee Nunley

  Funeral services for Nora "Nokie" Lee Nunley Strong, 77, of Keithville LA, relative of Panola County residents, were held on May 20, 2002 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home Chapel in Logansport. The Rev.   Born in Logansport, she was a retired clerk for Hancock Fabrics and was a resident of Keithville. She was preceded in death by her parents Jonah and Rosa Nunley and her sister Doris O'Brian.
  Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Dorothy LaMerle and Richard Nesbett of Shreveport; sister Adis Elaine Taxter of Shreveport; brother Leon Nunley of Shreveport; grandchildren Randy Nesbett and his wife Tyra of Keithville and Kevin Nesbett of Shreveport; great-grandchildren Harles, Aaron and Adam Nesbett.
  Pallbearers were Randy Nesbett, Kevin Nesbett, Mike O'Brian, Johnny Nunley, Shelton Perkins and Rusty Hays. Honorary pallbearers were Bob Hays and L.J. Whitten.

  He was a graduate of Carthage High School. Donnie earned his bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State University while attending school on a baseball scholarship. He received his master's degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. Mr. Oden taught and coached four years in San Augustine before coming to Kilgore. Coach Oden touched many lives in the 29 years at Kilgore High School.
  He is survived by his wife, Mary Del Oden of Kilgore; a son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Carla Oden of Kilgore; a daughter, Vonn Oden of Dallas; his brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Sandra Oden of DeBerry; a sister and brother-in-law, Toby and Mack Monday of Kilgore; his brother-in-law and his wife, Ernest and Sue Eaves of Greenwood, La.; two grandchildren, Ryan and Madison Oden of Kilgore; his nephews, Walter, Ronnie and Stevie Oden and Michael Eaves; his nieces, Teri, Angela and Susan; two aunts, Eloise Martin and Maude Cloe Studdard; and 14 first cousins.

Mrs. Oden was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tatum. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jeff Oden, in 1993.
  Mrs. Oden is survived by one daughter, Dee Nell Swanner and her husband, Mike, of Tatum; one brother, Cecil Williams of Tatum; one grandson, Kevin Oden and his wife, Kim; and three great-grandchildren, Zach, Austin and Jake Oden, all of Longview.

  Services for Loyd Mims, 90, of Longview will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Rader Funeral Home in Longview. Officiating will be Pastor Larry Mims and the Rev. Charlotte Riddle with a eulogy by Mark Mims. Burial will be in New Prospect Cemetery in Henderson. After a lengthy battle with cancer, Mr. Mims died peacefully in his sleep at his home.
  Mr. Mims was born Oct. 3, 1911, in Henderson to Albert and Cora Lee Mims. He was a farmer and was with the Department of Agriculture through the Rusk County Oil Mill and Fertilizer Works. He married Betty Ramsey Nov. 5, 1948, and moved to Wichita Falls, where he owned and operated several barber and beauty shops and was also in real estate.
  Retiring in 1979, he moved back to East Texas and was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Longview.
  He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Foster, John and Sam Mims, and a sister, Bessie Mae Standard, all of Henderson; a grandson, Wesley Vaughn Riddle of Dallas; and special grandson Danny Loyd Mims of Las Vegas.
  Mr. Mims is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Betty Mims of Longview; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Patsy Mims of Las Vegas, Pastor Larry and Carol Mims of Franklin, Tenn., and Mark and Vickie Mims of Pittsburg; one daughter and son-in-law, the Rev. Charlotte and Marshall Riddle of Harleton; one sister, Elsie Lee VanSickle of Henderson; his brothers-in-law, Ferris Ramsey of Carthage and Buddy Ramsey and his wife, Movelda, of Henderson; a sister-in-law, Sybil Morton of Odessa; numerous nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Betty Reeves and Robbie Butler of Odessa; nine grandchildren, John Beall, Barbara Beall, Cheryl Bond, Carrie Lewis, Martin Mims, Jake and Matthew Mims and Heather and Leslie Mims; and 11 great-grandchildren.
  Pallbearers will be his grandsons and special friends Chase and Scott Martin and B.W. Brantley. Honorary pallbearers will be Angus Mims, Jacob Mims, Billy Barton, Buddy Ramsey, Ferris Ramsey, H.D. Standard, James Barber and David Castle.

  She was born Dec. 28, 1912, in Tatum. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Tatum and was a schoolteacher for 33 years. She attended East Texas Baptist University, the University of Colorado, William & Mary University and Sul Ross University. She received a bachelor of arts degree from East Texas State University. Mrs. Smith was a charter member and a lifetime member of Tatum Garden Club.
  She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis R. Smith; a sister, Margaret Murray; and her parents, R.E. "Doc" Young and Minnie Belle Menefee Young. She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, C. Larry and Nancy Smith of Tatum, Ross Menefee Smith of Houston and James R. and Patricia Smith, also of Houston. Survivors also include five grandchildren, Suzan Stanfield and her husband, Steven, of Denver, Tate Smith of Tatum, Curt Smith of Tatum, Allison Smith of Houston and Christine Smith, also of Houston, and one great-granddaughter, Sarah Paige Stanfield of Denver.
  The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today, Feb. 8, at the funeral home.

  Born January 22, 1940, she was the youngest of three children born to the late Ernest and Martha Harris. She attended Marshall public schools where she specialized in cosmetology. Her early Christian training was done in Pine Bluff Baptist Church. She later moved to Dallas where she made many friends.
  Survivors include her newphew, Harold Lovely; many close cousins and a host of friends.

  Funeral services for Rev. Daniel Allison were held January 18, 2002 at Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Henderson. The Rev. Carolyn Sims officiated.
  Rev. Allison was born to the late Caleb and Rebecca Smith Allison on May 16, 1916. He united in holy matrimony to the late Cora Mae Chatham Allison. They were in love with each other for over 50 years. To this union five girls and one son was born.
  Rev. Allison retired from Donnell Saw Mill after 40 plus years of employment. Three sisters and one brother preceded him in death, Vera Lee Allison of Tatum, Sally Mae Allison Simpson and Precious Allison Gray, John Richard Allison, all of Carthage. Another brother Haston Dock Allison died three days after receiving the news of Daniel's death. Services for Haston Dock Allison were held Friday, January 25, 2002 in Saginaw, Michigan.
  He leaves to cherish his precious memories: daughters Margie Bell of Palm Springs CA, Doris Calhoun of Carthage, Irma Champion of Gary, Margarett Tucker and Elizabeth Jones both of Carthage; and one son, the late Milton Lee Allison of Carthage; 17 grandchildren (two preceded him in death, L.D.   Born October 4, 1914 in Panola County, she was the daughter of Willis Blackburn and Cornelia Ellen McDaniel Rhiddlehoover. She completed Alsup schools and wed Add Dorman on December 16, 1933. They celebrated 51 years of marriage before his death in 1984. She was employed at Whites Home and Auto and received the Employee of the Year award in 1973. She had been a member of Southside Baptist Church since 1950 where she taught Sunday School, was a member of the Mary Sunday School Class and played the piano. She was preceded in death by a son Weldon Dorman; brothers J.B., Reagan, Roy, Fonnie, Billy and Murry Rhiddlehoover and sisters Ethel Rhiddlehoover McPherson, Vesta Rhiddlehoover Howell and Dee Alma Rhiddlehoover Bridwell.
  Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law Fred Allen and Dorothy Dorman of Canton, Richard Blackburn Dorman of Longview, James Larry and Mickey Dorman of Beckville and Jerry Don and Pat Dorman of Carthage; daughter and son-in-law Sue Dorman and Oliver Graves of Huffman and daughter-in-law Susie Fields Dorman of Carthage.
  Also surviving Dorman is her sister Alice Rhiddlehoover Chamness of Carthage; sisters in law Helen Rhiddlehoover, Edith Wooten and Iva Lou Swanson all of Carthage; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; special friends, the staff of Briarcliff Nursing Home and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

They celebrated nearly 20 years of marriage before his death. She had lived in Carthage since 1989 and been employed as a dietary aide at a hospital in California for ten years.
  Since moving to Carthage she had been employed in the shoe department at WalMart. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary #5620 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She enjoyed crocheting and loved to play Scrabble.

  Born June 20, 1906 in Brownwood, she was the daughter of Will J. and Mary Sarah Goyotte Crundwell. She was married to the late A.Z. Millican and for approximately 45 years she lived in Fort Worth. In 1978 her family moved to Carthage and since 1992 she had lived in Tomball.
  She was an active member of Central Baptist Church until she moved to Tomball and a member of Eastern Star Chapter 747 in Carthage. She was a loving mother and grandmother and everyone who knew her will miss her. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother William and sister Delphene.
  Survivors include her daughter Naomi Funk of Houston; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

  Born July 20, 1947 in Marshall, he was the son of C.W. and Alice Marie Briggs Moore. He attended Marshall public schools and was retired from J.M. Security Services. He married Sherry Allums on May 20, 1966 in Marshall and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War era. He had also served in the U.S. Army reserve.

  Born July 8, 1954 in Henderson, he was the son of Rev. Ray and Mildred Tatum and was a life time resident of Rusk County. He was of the Baptist faith and drove the handicapped bus for Henderson schools and transportation. He was preceded in death by his brother, Steve Tatum.
  Survivors include his wife Ruthie Clark Tatum of Henderson; step-daughter and son-in-law Tisha and Brandon Goff of Palestine; parents Rev. JACKSON, Joseph Earl

  A memorial service for Joseph Earl Jackson, 82, of Carthage, was held January 29, 2002 at First United Methodist Church in Carthage. Dr. Gary Fitzgerald of Carthage and Dr. Steve Rody of San Antonio officiated.
  A private burial followed in Hopewell Cemetery near Lindale under the direction of Caudle-Rutledge Funeral Home in Lindale. Local arrangements were under the direction of Lipsey Family Funeral Home in Carthage. He died January 27, 2002 at his residence after a lengthy illness.
  Born in 1919 in Smith County, he was the son of James Olan and Belle Kay Jackson. He was a long time lawyer in Carthage and graduated from Tyler High School. He attended Tyler Junior College and received his law degree from the University of Texas Law School in Austin. He joined the Navy during World War II and continued on active duty through the Korean War before joining the law firm of Long & Strong in Carthage in 1953.
  Jackson continued his law practice there until December of 2001 and remained active in the Naval Reserve until 1979, attaining the rank of captain U.S. Nave Ret. In 1993 the State Bar of Texas recognized him for 50 years of the practice of law in Texas. In 1943 he married the former Jon Beth Shelton of Tyler who preceded him in death in 1995. They are survived by a daughter and son-in-law Lynell and David Y. Burkett of San Antonio.
  In 1996 he married Jesse Helen Harris Ramsey, who survives him. He is also survived by his step-sons and daughters-in-law Dennis and Geneva Ramsey of Austin and Kenneth and Judy Ramsey of El Paso; three step-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.

  LINDALE - Joseph Earl Jackson, 82, a longtime lawyer in Carthage, died at his home Sunday morning, Jan. 27, 2002, after a year-long battle with cancer. Mr. Jackson was born in Smith County in 1919, the only son of James Olan and Belle Kay Jackson.
  He graduated from Tyler High School, attended Tyler Junior College and received his law degree from the University of Texas Law School in Austin.

  In 1996, he married Helen Ramsey, who survives him. He also is survived by two stepsons, Dennis Ramsey and his wife, Geneva, of Austin and Kenneth Ramsey and his wife, Judy, of El Paso, as well as by three stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
  Visitation was 6-9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, in the family home in Carthage. After a private burial in Hopewell Cemetery near Lindale today, Jan. 29, his life will be celebrated at a memorial service at 2 p.m. today at First Methodist Church in Carthage. A reception will follow in the church parlor. Arrangements are by Caudle Rutledge Funeral Home.
  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Longview or a church of choice.

  Born April 7, 1916 in St. Louis MO he was the son of Ralph and Veronica Brynac Krshul. He graduated from Bayless High School with the class of 1934 and attended business college. He served his country as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army and owned and operated Al's Restaurant in Afton MO. He later worked as a vending machine distributor for Fawn Vending of Iowa. In 1973 he made a career change and worked as a deputy for the St. Louis County Sheriff's Department where he was employed as a process server until his retirement.
  Krshul was a member of the VFW Post 103 in Maplewood MO, the Concord Village Lions Club and the Gravois Kiwanis Club. He was instrumental in helping to organize the Afton Volunteer Fire Department in Missouri in 1944. Upon his retirement he married Brooksie Ima Hughes and moved to the Shady Grove Community in Panola County where he continued to organize volunteer fire fighters and was instrumental in starting the Intercommunity Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his sisters Josephine Heutel and Dorothy Krshul.
  Survivors include his wife Brooksie Krshul of the Shady Grove Community; daughter and son-in-law Sandra and Steven Robine of Warrenton MO; step-son and daughter-in-law Ted and Cathy Ballard of Deberry; granddaughter and her spouse Amy Lynn and Michael Elliott of Fenton MO; step-grandchildren Jesse Ballard of Dallas and Becky Ballard and fiancé Tim Le Brun of Deberry.
  Also surviving Krshul is his great-granddaughter Ashley Nicole Elliot of Fenton; step great-grandson Collin Ballard of Deberry; sisters-in-law Rae Craig of Longbranch and Audrey Corbitt and I.Z. Jones both of Center; nephew and his spouse Marty and Cindy Heutel of Dittmer MO and numerous other relatives and a host of friends.
  Pallbearers were Johnny Cole, David Cole, Jesse Ballard, Tim LeBrun, John Ulrich, Steve Robine, Mark Hughes and Dale Lawhorn.

  Mrs. Ledbetter was born Nov. 25, 1931, in Amarillo. She was the youngest of two daughters born to Leona Booth McDuffie and Horace Guy McDuffie of Mountain View, Okla. Mrs. Ledbetter owned and operated Ledbetter Court Searches in Abilene until her recent illness. She also owned and operated Ledbetter Court Searches in Longview for a number of years before to moving to Abilene in 1999. Mrs. Ledbetter was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi and was a membership relations director for the Longview Chamber of Commerce for several years.
  Survivors include her husband, Walt Ledbetter of Abilene; one son, Brandon M.   CARTHAGE - Services for Ella Mae Kersh, 91, of Clayton will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 19, 2002, at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ken Stone and the Rev. T.A. Crow officiating. Interment will follow in Clayton Cemetery. Mrs. Kersh died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, in Longview.
  Mrs. Ella Mae Kersh was born April 9, 1910, in Clayton to Garry Richard and Ella Prior Reed. She attended public school in Clayton and Carthage and then Stephen F. Austin State College, as it was known when she was a student there. Ella wed James Clayton Kersh of Gary on July 26, 1932, and together they celebrated 40 years of marriage before his death in 1972. Mrs. Kersh was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Clayton, and before her death she was the oldest member of that church. She worked for a time in the Baker Koonce Cafeteria.
  Mrs. Kersh was always very interested in her family, both immediate and extended, and was extremely proud that her great-great-grandfather, Isaac Reed, established the first Baptist church in Texas, the Old North Church, outside of Nacogdoches. He also established the Bethel Baptist Church in Clayton. She was proud that her parents and grandparents were charter members of the First Baptist Church in Clayton. She related many interesting stories of her Reed and her Prior ancestors. Mrs. Kersh enjoyed sewing, cooking and working with her flowers. She is preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy Marilyn; a brother, Robert Wilson Reed; four sisters, Mary Lucille Reed, Melissa Ruth Reed, Lou Willard Ross, and Jeanette Harrell Taylor; and two sisters-in-law, Katie Mae Gray Reed and Edna Kersh Maddox.
  Mrs. Kersh is survived by devoted son James Rex Kersh of Clayton; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Victoria Kersh Duke of Carthage and Mrs. Madie Lou Graves Kersh Jimerson of Houston; three nephews, Mr. Richard G. Reed of Clayton, Mr. Jerry G. Kersh of Houston and Mr. Charles Duke of White Oak; five nieces, Mrs. Robbie Lynn Reed Marshall of Alvin, Mrs. Sarah Reed Harris of Long Branch, Mrs. Wendell Bowen of Pasadena, Mrs. Robert L. Davis of Carthage and Mrs. John Conway, also of Carthage; two cousins, Mrs. Annelle Smith of Spring and Mrs. Louise Boren of Henderson; many great- and great-great-nieces and great- and great-great-nephews; and a host of friends.

SANDERS, Onise Ava

  MARSHALL - Services for Onise Ava Harrison Sanders, 75, of Marshall are set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002 at Morgan Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ron Segers will officiate. Interment will follow in Rehobeth Cemetery in Carthage. Mrs. Sanders died Thursday, Jan 17, 2002 in a Longview hospital.   Mrs. Sanders was born on March 2, 1926 in Panola County, TX. She was the daughter of William Edward and Lela Clyde Breedlove Harrison. Onise married Jasper Jackson Sanders on Feb. 10, 1942 in Panola County, TX. Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Elizabeth Sanders Bagwell, and a granddaughter, Stacy Leigh Lawhorn.
  Mrs. Sanders is survived by her husband, Jasper J. Sanders, of Marshall; daughter, Betty Jo Morgan; sons and daughter-in-law, Jack Norman Sanders, of Marshall and Johnny Wayne Sanders, Sr. and wife, of Marshall. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Johnny Wayne Sanders, Jr., Kay Sanders, Crystal Sanders, Brianna Bagwell, Ashley Phillips, Theresa Brown, Michael Duane Smith, Melody Sammons, and Jennifer Morgan and 19 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Maxine and Jack Barnes, of Chandler, TX, Mildred Hodges and Callie Sanders,both of Carthage and numerous nieces and nephews.

  Services for Marvin L. O'Brien, 66, of Lake Cherokee will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at the Welch Funeral & Memorial Center Garden Court, 4619 Judson Road in Longview, with the Rev. Eugene Tolstedt officiating. Burial will follow in Grace Hill Cemetery.
  Mr. O'Brien was born Oct. 1, 1935, to William H.T. and Marvel Inez Nichols O'Brien in Sioux City, Iowa. He was a veteran of the Korean War and a retired aviation machinist. Mr. O'Brien was a Methodist and an avid fisherman and hunter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Marvel Inez O'Brien.
  Mr. O'Brien is survived by his wife of 47 years, Beverly O'Brien; two sons, Bob O'Brien of Tatum and Bill O'Brien of Longview; one daughter, Rhonda Howard of Indiana; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tom O'Brien of Battle Creek, Iowa, and Gerry O'Brien of Los Banos, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

  She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Lamar and Betty Hancock of Longview; three grandchildren; a sister, Betty Arnold of Columbus, Ga.; and a brother, Jack Moore, also of Columbus, Ga.

DICKERSON, Albert Thomas

  CARTHAGE - Services for Albert Thomas Dickerson, 73, of the Deadwood community will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Deadwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mervin Scott, the Rev. Harold Gunstanson and the Rev. Ronnie Luman officiating. Interment will be in Deadwood Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Mr. Dickerson died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, in Shreveport.
  Albert Thomas "Tom" Dickerson was born July 19, 1928, in Deadwood to William Albert "Willbuck" and Tommie Briggs Dickerson. Tom attended Deadwood schools, graduated with the first graduating class from Panola Junior College, then graduated from Centenary College with a bachelor of science degree in geology. Tom served his country with the U.S. Navy. On June 7, 1950, he wed Temple Mae LaGrone. They celebrated nearly 50 years of marriage before her death in 1999. Tom and Temple became active members of the Deadwood community. He was employed as a geologist for Phillips Petroleum for 23 years and retired as exploration manager from Franks Petroleum Co.
  Tom Dickerson was the fire chief of the Flatwood Fire Department for 10 years. He founded the Deadwood Water Board, where he served as their first president and continued to serve for 10 years. In the late 1970s, he was named Hunter of the Year by Sutton County, where he enjoyed deer hunting for 30 years.
  Thomas was a member of the American Geological Society and had served as an election judge and reserve deputy with the Panola County Sheriff's Department. He also served as an ambassador for the Panola County Chamber of Commerce.
  For more than 30 years, Tom was a member of the Deadwood United Methodist Church, where he loved singing with the choir.
  Thomas was well-loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
  Mr. Dickerson was preceded in death by three sisters, Ulah Bea Farmer, Jane Luman and Dorothy Luman, and one brother, John Dickerson.
  Survivors include a son, Jeff Dickerson and his wife, Heather, of Deadwood; a daughter, Donna Dickerson Rowe of Waco; his mother-in-law, Zona Mae LaGrone; two brothers, Lawrence Rodney Dickerson and his wife, Rosa Lee, of Deadwood and Boyce Brown and his wife, Shirley, of Waskom; two sisters, Willie Mae Rinkle and her husband, Neal, of Carthage and Lorraine Godwin and her husband, Glen, of Deadwood; two brothers-in-law, Joe Ben LaGrone and his wife, Peggy, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Troy H. LaGrone and Sarah of Denton; his grandchildren, Sarah Isbell and her husband, Michael, of Deadwood, Danny Dickerson and his wife, Blanca, of Houston, Laura Dickerson of Deadwood and Michael Dee Rowe of Waco; two great-grandchildren, Macy Kathryn Isbell and Madison Emily Isbell; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
  Pallbearers will be Michael Dee Rowe, Charles "Brick" Dickerson, Michael Isbell, Ronnie Ebarb, Mike Ebarb, Jack Elliott and Jerry Coxen. Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Martin, Steve Pittman, Mason Dickerson and Edward Yarborough.
  Viewing at the funeral home is today, Jan. 3. Visitation with the family was 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, and will be 6-8 p.m. today, Jan. 3.
