HELVENSTON, Kathleen "Sis"

Tatum's own beloved "Sis" Kathleen Helvenston passed away Tuesday night in Longview. She had suffered through the surgery, treatments and pain. Throughout her few months battling cancer she fought for the chance to live. She will be greatly missed by the people of Tatum.
Sis was born in Tatum off a pioneer family. She became a school teacher, like her mother and sister. She retired from that profession and returned to her home town several years ago. Retired? No. She spent a full working day, each day, helping make life better for those who needed help.
She headed the Tatum Cemetery Association and was the dynamic leader of the Tatum Samaritan House. She was a member of the Tatum Housing Authority where she helped find housing for those with little or no income. She worked distributing surplus foods to the needy as long as that program survived. As head of the Samaritan House she distributed funds, food and clothing to the needy for the Interchurch Ministries.
Perhaps the most loving act for Kathleen Helvenston was the daily trek to a Longview nursing home to feed and comfort her sister, Clarice Helvenston Garrett.
Sis will be missed but she has left many tangible reminders of her time here. One of those remembrances that will remain after her is a memorial garden at the Tatum Samaritan House. The memorial was in progress before her death. A beautiful curved cement bench inscribed "Tatum's 'Sis'- Kathleen Helvenston" has been placed under a large pecan tree which is growing on land where she grew up and lived until her hospitalization. A magnolia tree, azaleas, gardenias and crape myrtle shrubs surround the bench.
The Tatum Beautification Committee is supervising the planting of the garden and it will be expanded if more donations are received. Anyone wishing to add to the memorial should make checks payable to Tatum Beautification Committee, P.O. Box 588, Tatum, TX 75691.
An obituary will be printed in this newspaper when it is received.
