Notes:
Mattie's grave
is outside the perimeter of the cyclone fence, which surrounds
the cemetery. Her grave is marked by white marble headstone and
footstone and is located on a mound about 20 - 30 feet from the
fence. The headstone has been broken and knocked over. We were
told that a few years ago two young bulls were fighting and caused
the damage. It is broken across the area where "Knight"
was engraved, making it unreadable, but we are certain that this
is Mattie's grave, as the name "Mattie" and the dates
correspond to our records, and the grave was pointed out many
times by Wade Knight (her son) to his daughter, Mabel Lucille
Knight Barnes. Near the cemetery, we were told, once stood a
school and a house. The old highway from English to Avery once
passed near the cemetery.
