Poor Farm Cemetery
Red River County

Poor Farm Cemetery,"This cemetery is located in the northwest quadrant of Red River County, Texas. For many years, as was the tradition of the time, Red River County operated a county farm or as it was popularly known, a poor farm. Persons that had reached a point in life where they could no longer take care of themselves of that were in bad health were sent to these county run facilities, generally for the duration of their lives. The poor farm was established in 1878, consisted of 57.5 acres of land and was finally sold in 1941 to Chas. T. Brooks for the amount of $1,625. During this period the farm was self sufficient and grew nearly all the foodstuffs used there. Also, there was established on the site two cemeteries, one for the black burials and one for the white burials, and two of the county death certificates specify burial on the county farm premises and gives the name of the person responsible for the burial there. We have not been able to locate the burial locations to this date other than on the grounds that were occupied by the poor farm just east of Bagwell."
