Tanyard
Cemetery
Tanyard Cemetery, Mar
1870, "This cemetery is located in the northwest quadrant
of Red River County, Texas. Located on Tanyard Creek east and
north of Addielou on land owned by Sammy Andrews. This is private
land and any attempt to visit this cemetery should be coordinated
through the owner. On 19 Apr 2000 we were finally able to visit
the site of this old burial ground locally called Tanyard due
to the proximity to the old hide tanning facilities. We were
taken to the site by Boyd Harmening of Addielou Community. The
cemetery is located near the junction of Tanyard Creek and Pine
Creek atop a large bluff overlooking the area. It is also known
as Vickrey Cemetery since it is located on land historically
owned by that family. There is evidence of possibly 50 to 75
more burials in the area but only 3 markers were located after
a stay of an hour. One of the markers was discovered during our
probing of the area and is very incomplete and only partial data
was recovered. Another of the markers, Sallie Johnston, was a
daughter to Boyd's gg grandparents. Size of the cemetery is about
3/10 of an acre and is definitely in the abandoned category.
The oldest burial is questionably that of Stephen Bell, a confederate
veteran. His death is stated as March 1870 but he is not on the
1870 Mortality Schedule. He is shown with his family on the 1870
Federal Census taken in August of 1870. We will, however, show
his burial as the oldest in the cemetery."
