Some out of the windows, some under the stage, As stated, the two young ladies played on the piano the tune "Run, Nigger, Run" and the nigger did run. "The nigger run, the nigger flew, the nigger tore his shirt into. Run, nigger, run, you'd better get away." Clarksville was not only the educational center, but also the mother town of Presbyterianism in Texas. The first Presbyterian organization of Clarksville is now in service, having been operating since its organization in 1833. However, this church was first organized under a large oak tree four miles northeast of Clarksville at old Shiloh, and was subsequently moved into the City of Clarksville and consolidated with the Clarksville Cumberland Church in 1840. This old Presbyterian Church was organized in 1833 at old Shiloh by the pioneers of Texas, James Latimer, Rev. Milton Estill, and other prominent members of this early church -- the wife of James Latimer, Elizabeth, George and Margaret Bagby, Finley Moore and his wife, Sally. The tombs of most of these members can be found in the old Shiloh Cemetery about one mile west of Madras. This old Shiloh Church was constructed of hewed logs, split logs with wooden pegs in them for seats, and the Rev. Sam Corley was the first regularly |
