Hill were Presbyterian preachers, also Gilbert Clark, who often preached at this old log house, a kind of community church. This was done in the 1830's. Also Rev. Mansell W. Matthews preached here during the '30's. The charter members of this church were A. H. Latimer and his wife, Elizabeth; George Bagby and wife, Margaret; Finley Moore and wife, Sally. A. H. Latimer and George Bagby were the first ruling elders.

In 1840 the Shiloh congregation of the Cumberland Church was consolidated with the Clarksville church with representatives of the congregations at Clarksville, Shiloh, and Hopewell (Shamrock) congregations; this bringing about, under the Presbyterial laws, the continuity of the first organized Presbyterian Church at Shiloh in 1833, which organization is still of today. This church at Clarksville has the distinction of being the oldest Protestant church in Texas with continuous existence and organization.

Rev. Corley was made the pastor of this church in the year of the consolidation with the Shiloh church. The Rev. Sam Corley's charges extended from Helena, Arkansas, to Goliad, Texas, and six months were required to cover the territory under his charge. He was one of the most conspicuous figures in religious work in the early days. Owing to his force of character, his effective ability as a preacher, his sweetness of voice in song, he became quite a character in church work.
