EARLY CLARKSVILLE MERCHANTS

James Clark added a room to his private residence in which he sold goods, the first sold in Clarksville. Among the early merchants were: A man by the name of Sofley, W. P. Cornelius, Hiram Patten, Levi Goldberg, George Silberberg, Steinline, Isador and Leopold Silberberg, a man by the name of Murphy, and a man by the name of Britan, who was a hardware merchant.

Charles M. Hardman of Georgia, the father of W. E. Hardman, came to Texas about 1851 and settled near Spring Hill, in what is now Bowie County. The father of the subject of this sketch was a planter in Georgia. Charles M. Hardman married Miss Mary E. Wooten, a sister of Judge William E. Wooten. To this union were born six children, three boys and three girls.

Joel Thomas Hardman married Miss Laura Beaty. He died in Red River County in 1900. Dora Hardman married M. C. Davis. She died in 1894. R. M. Hardman spent his life in Red River County and married Miss Lucy Dalby in 1883. He died in Red River County in 1924. His wife died in 1906. Georgia Hardman married Francis B.
