was especially the friend of the public schools and for a long time was an active member of the school board, and was wont to say that if he had any hobby it was education for the young. He headed the petition which resulted in the establishing of a system of graded schools in Clarksville. He took an active part in securing the Clarksville Carnegie Library. At one time he formed a partnership with Col. W. J. Swain, then Ex-Comptroller of the State of Texas, later was associated in the practice of law with Col. N. A. Shaw, and finally with Herbert I. Jones, now vice-president of the First National Bank in Clarksville. He was attorney for some time for the Texas & Pacific Railway in the Northeastern District of Texas. He was a member of the A. F. & A. M. Masonic Lodge of Clarksville, a member of the Odd Fellows, and also of the "Old School" Presbyterian Church here.

JOHN NANCE GARNER

December 19, 1890 Mr. Burdett was appointed by Judge McClellan as chairman of a committee to examine the application of John Nance Garner to practice law. The committee reported back to the Court that Garner was qualified for the practice of law and recommended that he be granted a license, which was done. He was widely known throughout this county and was loved and revered. He has acquired national fame and is now Vice-President of the United States.
