Tennessee Army in 1863, returned to Texas and served in the coast guard until the close of the war. In 1881 he represented in the State Legislature, the County of Red River. On December 21, 1864, Mr. Burkes married Miss Isabella H. Hopkins, daughter of Capt. James E. and Rebecca (Gregg) Hopkins, who were among the very earliest settlers of this portion of Texas. Six children blessed this union: Joseph E., Rebecca, John C., Nannie, Willie H., and Hinton E.  Mr. Burkes was an honored member of the Masonic fraternity.

[The West Family]

Major Edward West, among the early prominent settlers of Red River County, married Miss Susan Jones. They lived about two and one-half miles northwest of Clarksville, having settled there in 1833 and having acquired a large tract of land [see map]. Maj. West, as formerly stated, was legally appointed the first sheriff of Red River County during the Republic of Texas.

This family comprised the following: Arabella, Adelle, Susan, Lucy, and two boys, John C. and Wade. Miss Arabella married W. P. Cornelius, Miss Susan married Capt. M. L. Sims [photo], Miss Adelle married Capt. L. D. Van Dyke, and Miss Lucy married Lindsay Lane. Wade West married a girl living in the Indian Territory, where he lived the remainder of his life, leaving two daughters, Misses Belle and Hettie West, formerly living at Muskogee, Oklahoma. John C. West married Miss Emma Winifred Burkes, a daughter of Col. John C. Burkes, Sr. To this union there remain the following
