of James A. and Elizabeth Smith. His parents brought him to America at the age of 18 months, landing in New York in 1856. Coming right on from New York to Chicago, he remained for three or four years. Dr. Smith was educated in Washington Medical College, St. Louis, Missouri, and finally landed in Texas in 1887, living awhile at Woodland, then finally settling at Detroit, and living there up to the present time.

In 1889 Dr. Smith married Miss Fannie Parks of Woodland. There were born to this family three children, two of whom are still living. Miss Eugene Smith now lives with her father at Detroit, Henry R. Smith, Jr., now lives at Clarksville, being now and for the past several years with the Paris Grocer Company. This son, Henry R., married the daughter of a very prominent family of Red River County, Miss Vera Stanley, the daughter of S. B. Stanley. Dr. Smith has always been prominent in the affairs of the town and county, working hand in hand with all others for civic improvements. Dr. Smith is hale and hearty at the present age of 82 years.

Mr. J. S. Kerbow of Detroit, Texas, is the son of Doc and Frances V. Kerbow, who came from Georgia. The father, Doc Kerbow, was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg. Mr. Kerbow was a Confederate soldier. The widow of Doc Kerbow had left to her five children, two girls and three boys as follows: John S., Mrs. Lummie Kerbow Grant, Mrs. John F. Hardin, J. S. Kerbow and D. S. Kerbow.
