River which was the county seat of Miller County, Arkansas, covering what was then and now the same territory as Red River County.

Red River County today has a population of approximately 35,000 people, with a voting strength around 5,500.

STEPHENSBORO

Stephensboro, of Red River County, is an old town, now extinct, and was founded about 1864 by Obadiah Stephens, a sawmill man who built a large mill there and had quite a large trade at his commissary during the early seventies. The greater portion of the data of Stephensboro I obtained from Mr. B. M. Sport, now a citizen of Bagwell. Stephensboro at one time had four mercantile business establishments besides the furniture factory.

In the 1870's there was a furniture factory at Stephensboro under the direction of one of the best cabinet builders that ever came into this portion of the State, Jasper Longe, Sr., and the people had household furniture manufactured at Stephensboro in carload lots. I understand there is a cradle now in the museum at San Antonio manufactured by old man Jasper Longe, treasured as a work of art and of magnificent design. There live in Clarksville today several of the descendants of Jasper Longe, and his son, Jasper Longe, Jr., was well known throughout northeast Texas.
