        1.  John² Thompson  (James¹) was born 28 January 1809 in Jefferson County, Kentucky, and died 19 November 1879 in Rockwall County, Texas.  He married Hannah Corilla Halbert 17 March 1828 in Owen County, Indiana, daughter of Thomas Halbert and Margaret Woodsmall.  She was born 30 January 1811 in Millwood, Nelson County, Kentucky, and died 17 June 1895 in Rockwall County, Texas.

Thompson Phillips and her family are listed right after them and Catherine Thompson Blake and her family are listed right before them. 

By the 1870 census for Kaufman, Texas, John and Hannah only have one child still at home but their daughter, Sarah Thompson Norman and her family are listed right after them in the census record (Roll: M5931-594, Page: 106A, Sheet: 76B, Image: 106 of 178, FHF: 553093, 4th of August, Line: 23, Dwelling/Family: 685/703).  John is sixty-three years old and a farmer.  He owns $4500 in real estate and $1500 in personal property.  He was born in Kentucky.  Hannah is fifty-nine years old and born in Kentucky.  Their son, William, is nineteen and at home.  He was born in Indiana.

John Thompson was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky, to James Thompson born 1777, and Anna Curry. James and Anna moved with their children to Owen County, Indiana when John was about 9 years old. Siblings born in Kentucky were: William, Sara, Margaret, Lucinda, James Jr., and Daniel. Siblings born in Indiana were: Keller and twin Allen, Susan and Ellen. Allen, Jane, Susan and Ellen did not live to maturity.

John met Hannah in Owen County, Indiana and was married March 17, 1828. All of their children were born in Indiana: Benjamin, Julia Ann, Margaret, Catherine, C. James, Thomas, Marion, his twin Milton Allen, Minerva Jane, Nancy E.., Susan, Sarah, Hanna Corilla, John Smith and William Cotton born July 15, 1851. The family came to Texas after the birth of William Cotton and were in Texas for the 1860 census. John's brothers, James Jr., and Daniel had come to Texas in 1848 and settled in Kaufman County where John later moved his family.

Julia Ann married A. J. Phillips and Catherine married Christopher C. Blake in a double wedding June 16, 1850 and both couples moved to Texas along with John's family. Benjamin married Amanda Elizabeth Baugh; Margaret married James A. Howeth January 23, 1855; C. James married Elizabeth Stanley and after her death he married Talitha Barton; Thomas Marion married Talitha Endemile Goss October 20, 1865; Milton Allen married Susan Harrison December 27, 1866; Minerva Jane married Wade M. Kyser January 11, 1860; Nancy E. married J. S. Tucker August 15, 1869; Susan married Alonzo Howard in a double wedding with her sister Minerva Jane; Sarah married Richard Norman January 16, 1869; John Smith married Tabitha A. Vance April 11, 1880; and William Cotton Thompson married Mary C. Buress November 30, 1876.

James, father of John Thompson, was born August 15, 1777 in Virginia and married Anna Curry, April 16,1799 in Jefferson County, Kentucky. Family records indicate that James' parents came from "near Edinburg, Scotland." John's brother, William Thompson was in the wedding agreements of many Thompson family members in both Jefferson County, Kentucky and in Owen County, Indiana. Due to William's age, researchers believe he was the brother to James. James and Anna lived to a ripe old age in Washington Township, Owen County, Indiana. Surviving is an original letter of James written to his son John in Rockwall, Texas which shows good penmanship and grammar, a strong argument that James was well educated. James was buried in McNutt Cemetery, on private land in Wayne Township, Owen County, Indiana. The marker indicates he was born August 15, 1777 and died January 30, 1861. McNutt Cemetery was owned by Mrs. Edythe Bonness, a relative. There is no marker in this cemetery for Anna and after James' death, she may have moved to Iowa with her son, Keller.

Anna Curry, John's mother, was born 1785 in Kentucky and was the daughter of Thomas Curry and Sarah McCarty, who were in Jefferson County, Kentucky in 1785. Children of Thomas and Sarah were: Mary Elizabeth who married Rodham Seaton August 13, 1787 in Jefferson County, Kentucky; Margaret married Bartlett Asher March 21, 1791; Jane was born February 19, 1776, and married John Asher October 17, 1793; Anna married James Thompson April 16, 1799; Sarah "Sally" married Isaac Brazier October 12, 1803; Catherine was born June 15, 1791 and married James Farr July 7, 1808. All of children of Thomas and Sarah were married in Jefferson County, Kentucky. Other children were: Thomas Curry, Jr. and Daniel Curry, Jr.

According to some researchers, Sarah McCarty was the daughter of Nicholas McCarty and Mary, though other researchers disagree. Nicholas McCarty was active in the affairs of Kentucky County and Nelson County, Virginia. Children of Nicholas and Mary were: Thomas was born 1747 and married Anna Scott September 4, 1774; Margaret was born 1755 and married Thomas Curry and others, though not proven; Richard; Michael; and Thaddeus. Several publications have carried the story of Margaret "Peggy" McCarty Chenoweth who was scalped during an Indiana raid. She lived many years after the incident without her hair.

In the early days, Kentucky was a county in the state of Virginia and didn't become a state until 1780. Many other present day states that surround Kentucky were part of the larger Virginia Territory before it was divided into states.

Thompson and thirty-six years old.  She and her parents were born in Georgia.  She can not read or write.  Milton A. is their sixteen year old son.  John O. is eleven years old.  Hannah D. is three years old.  Benjamin's mother, Hannah C. Thompson is living with them.   She is sixty-nine years old and a widow.   She was born in Kentucky and her parents were born in Virginia.  Elizabeth Dunaway is ninety years old and a widow.  She is listed as a boarder but she is related to Amanda.  She can not read or write.  Elizabeth and her parents were born in Georgia.  William F. Turnbough is a twenty-three year old farm laborer.  He was born in Texas; his father was born in Alabama; and  his mother was born in Georgia.

Thompson and thirty-six years old.  She and her parents were born in Georgia.  She can not read or write.  Milton A. is their sixteen year old son.  John O. is eleven years old.  Hannah D. is three years old.  Benjamin's mother, Hannah C. Amanda is listed wrong again in the 1900 census for Justice Precinct 7, Collin County, Texas (Roll: T623-1621, Page: 190A, Sheet: 13A, ED: 21, 19th of June, Line: 3, Dwelling/Family: 16/217).  Ben Thompson is seventy years old (June 1829).  Amanda is listed as Elizabeth P and they have been married for thirty seven years.  Ben was born in Indiana and his parents were born in Kentucky.  He is a farmer and out of work for twelve months.  Amanda is fifty-three years old (Oct 1846).  She has had fourteen children and only two are living.  Amanda and her parents were born in Georgia.  She can not read or write.  They are living with their son-in-law, George Hancock and daughter, Delmer Hannah Thompson Hancock.  George Hancock is thirty years old (Dec 1869).  He has been married to Delmer for four years.  He was born in Kansas.  George is a farmer and owns his farm with a mortgage.  Delmer is listed as Demer H. Hancock and twenty-three years old (Sept 1876).  She has had only two children.  Carl is listed as Carol A. Hancock and three years old (Jan 1897).  Ethel M. Hancock is ten months old.  Both children were born in Texas.

James Starks is a twenty-two year old boarder (May 1878).  He was born in Texas; his father was born in Kentucky; and his mother was born in Missouri.  James is a farm laborer.  His relationship to the family is not currently known.

Andrew made his living as a farmer in Owens Co. The family moved to Texas in 1858 by prairie schooners. They lived in Rockwell, Texas. They moved to McDonald County, Missouri in 1871. Julia and Andrew had 10 children by the time they came to McDonald Co. They lost 3 children at birth, and had two more children in McDonald Co., making 6 girls and 6 boys.

Andrew built and operated the first flour mill in Cyclone, McDonald Co., Missouri {part of the wall still stands}

Andrew died in 1875 from Pneumonia and 3 children died of smallpox while in McDonald County, Missouri

Julia Ann moved to Saginaw, Missouri with her children. Several producing mines were in operation. She managed a boarding house, and sawed wood between meals.  She was aided by some of her oldest children. While an older son took the wood to town and sold it. She lost 2 more children right after she moved to Saginaw, from smallpox. Julia lived in Saginaw for 38 years. Julia lost her daughter Margaret from pneumonia. Her son J.J. Phillips preceded her in death he died in 1915.William Bose and Amanda were her last living children. She was living with her son William Bose and Bertha Nixon when she died in 1916.

James Thompson is remarried again by the 1900 census.  The census shows that James and Mary have been married for seventeen years.  They are living in Justice Precinct 1, Rockwall County, Texas (Roll: T623-1667, Page: 25A, Sheet: 3A, ED: 84, Image: 5 of 22, 4th of June, Line: 1, Dwelling/Family: 25/25).  James is sixty-five years old (Sept 1834).  He was born in Indiana and his parents were born in Virginia.  He is a farmer and owns his farm free and clear.  Mary is thirty-eight years old (June 1861).   She has had six children and five are living.   She and her mother were born in Alabama and her father was born in Georgia.  Grover Thompson is fifteen years old (Feb 1885).  Sethe Thompson is eight years old (May 1892).  Hinton Thompson is four years old (Sept 1895).  Tritty Thompson is one year old (March 1899).  All of the children were born in Texas.  James's son, Whitfield is listed next in the census with his family followed by James's brother, John M and his family.

Trettie Thompson is their eleven year old daughter.  All of the children were born in Texas.

C. James "Jim" Thompson

C. James Thompson was born September 7, 1834, in Owen County, Indiana, to John Thompson born 1809 and Hannah Corilla Halbert.  Both John and Hannah are buried in the Thompson Cemetery.  James came with his family to Texas c. 1851.  He married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Stanley, by whom he had a son, Whitfield T. Thompson.  After Lizzie's death, James married Dialtha Keithan, by whom he had a daughter, Adalia Constance "Connie" Thompson.  After Dialtha died, James married Mary Elizabeth Clower, by whom he had Grover, Ona, Seth, Hinton and Trettie Thompson, all of whom grew up in Oklahoma.  Mary Elizabeth Clower was a sister to George Daniel Clower.  George married Ora Bell Thompson who was the niece of C. James Thompson and daughter of Thomas Marion Thompson and Talitha Endemile Goss.

C. James Thompson died February 1, 1917, and is interred in the Cedar Cemetery, Quinton, Oklahoma.

Eph never married. He went to Montana and staked out a claim. He had a ranch which he left to a neighbor who he was close to for many years, though it was not a romantic relationship. When Eph got old, he moved into the Elks Club in Billings or Livingston Montana. He was laid to rest in the Elk cemetery on the West side of a road coming out of and just outside Yellowstone park. His grave and marker are visible from the fence surrounding the cemetery. Curg and Mattie were visiting Eph in Montana when Curg died of a heart attack. I believe they were on a train when he died. Thompson is a prisoner in the United States Naval Prison in Vallejo, Solano County, California (Roll: T624-108, Page:  Sheet: 8B; ED: 194, Image: 16 of 35, 8th of April, Line: 92).  He is twenty-one years old.  He and his mother were born in Texas and his father was born in Missouri.  He was an apprentice seaman.

Wilmer has not been located in the 1920 census but in the 1930 census, he is a prisoner in the United States Penitentiary at McNeil Island, Pierce County, Washington (Roll: 2510, Page: 59B, Sheet: 1B, ED: 55, Image: 2 of 23, 3rd of April, Line: 87, Dwelling/Family: )  Wilmer V. Thompson is forty-one years old and single.  He and his parents were born in Texas.   He is a prisoner and laborer at the penal institution.  He is a veteran of World War I. 

In the 1942 World War II draft card, Wilmer lists his sister, Nannie Garrett at Route 3, Terrew, Rockwall County, Texas as a person who will always know his address.  He is listed as under the care of Dr. Powers due to an injury.  He was working for the Tracy Transfer Company. 

        15.  William Cotton³ Thompson (John², James¹) was born 15 July 1851 in Owen County, Indiana⁵³, and died 15 September 1911 in Wichita Falls, Wichita County, Texas.  He married Mary Clementine Buress/Burrus 30 November 1876 in Rockwall County, Texas⁵⁴.  She was born 05 February 1856 in Arkansas^55,56, and died 24 November 1943 in Wichita Falls, Wichita County, Texas.

Thompson is forty-six years old (July 1853).  He was born in Indiana and his parents were born in Kentucky.  John is a freighter and owns his home free and clear.  Mary C. is forty-four years old (Feb 1856).  Mary has had seven children and six are living.  Arthur H. is nineteen years old (Sept 1880).  He is a freighter.  Lora E. is seventeen years old (Jul 1882).  John G. is sixteen years old (Feb 1884).  He is a farm laborer.  Orlando is thirteen years old (Jul 1886).  He is a farm laborer.  William C. is ten years old (Feb 1890).  All of the children were born in Texas.  

In the 1910 census shows the family having moved to Wichita Falls, Wichita County, Texas (Roll: T624-1597, Page: 306B, Sheet: 18B, ED: 227, Image: 35 of 41, 30th of April, Line: 71, Dwelling/Family: 233/318).  This census is really messed up.  The children listed as really grandchildren and in the 1920 census they show up in Mary's household correctly.  William is listed as W. C. Thompson and fifty-nine years old.  He was born in Indiana; his father was born in Missouri and his mother was born in Ohio (which is not correct for either parent).  He is a teamster for a transfer company.  The census shows that they have been married for twelve years instead of thirty-two years.  Mary is listed as forty-two years old instead of fifty-two years old.  She was born in Texas; her father was born in Arkansas; and her mother was born in Mexico.  Vera Thompson should be Vera Nix and seven years old.  Raymond Thompson is Raymond Nix and five years old.  Jewell Thompson should be Jewell Nix and two years old.  The grandchildren were born in Texas

Edith Kyser Smith original thought that the last record of William Cotton Thompson is from a photo of him and his brothers Back Milton-Allen Thomas-Marion Front Bill John Jim Ben and picture was taken on 28-Feb-1906  Not sure of the event at which the photo was taken.  But that is no longer true.  His death certificate and grave have been located since Edith's death in 2009.

WAR HERO IS BURIED HERE BY COMRADES

Every business house in Hedley was closed last Thursday afternoon, and one of the largest crowds ever assembled here attended the funeral of Wesley Adamson, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Adamson, who was killed in action in France October 8th, 1918, in the Argonne Meuse sector, in France.

Wesley was raised in Hedley, and was known and loved by all our people because of his sunny disposition and sterling character. He joined the Army soon after America got into the world war, being a private in Co. H, 142nd Infantry--the company organized at Clarendon and made up largely of Donley county boys. He was perhaps the youngest Donley county boy in active service, being less than 18 years old when he enlisted. He was highly esteemed by his comrades in arms, and did a true hero's part up to the time he made the supreme sacrifice.

The American Legion Post here, named for Wesley and another Hedley hero, had charge of the funeral, assisted by Aubyn E. Clark Post of Clarendon.

Capt. E. A. Simpson of Clarendon paid glowing tribute to Wesley's character, and spoke feelingly of splendid service to his country. Rev. Cal C. Wright made an eloquent and touching talk at the grave. The Ex Service Men, in charge of Capt. Nat S. Perrine, made the exercises beautifully impressive. Misses Mary Harris, Lola Kinsey, Annie Richey, Ima Moreman, Myrtle Reeves, Lola Baker and Ela Kirkpatrick, gowned in white, bore the lovely floral offerings. The pall bearers were Lake Dishman, Ceccil Williams, Ed Kinslow, Herman Kirkpatrick, Arthur Greer, Robt. Davis. Among those who took part, were Joe Holland, Harry Warren and Allen Beville. The funeral procession was said to have been about three miles long, many vehicles having reached the cemetery before others left the tabernacle where the funeral was held.

It was a sweetly solemn occasion, and there were few dry eyes among the vast throng of mourners. All Hedley joins us in expressions of deepest sympathy to the bereaved parents and other loved ones.

We cannot find words to express our thanks to everyone who came to us when the sad hour came that brought back to our Nation and home the body of our much loved soldier son and brother. How much your words of sympathy helped us you will never know, and to every one who helped in any way to make our grief lighter, we thank you ever and ever again. To his cousin whom he loved as a sister, who came more than 200 miles to attend his funeral, we express our thanks. To the girls who place the such beautiful flowers on his casket; to the American Legion, who have a tender place in our hearts, and who labored so faithfully to make everything as it was for our benefit and to show honor to him who gave his life for the--we can never tell you how we thank you. To every society and individual who placed flowers over the form of our loved one, we offer our sincere thanks. May our Father who loves each one of you reward you with a Mansion "Over There."

By 1910 John has moved the family to Glazier, Hemphill Co. TX. Couldn't find a listing of Christopher & Mary still living with them at that time.  Christopher & Mary could have died somewhere between moving from McKinney to Glazier. (Do you have death dates for them??)  In 1920 there is a household of a John L. Blake and wife Ella N. Blake in Potter county, TX.

In the 1920 census, John and Ella have moved to Amarillo, Potter County, Texas (Roll: T625-1837, Page:  ?, Sheet: 1A, ED: 199, Image: 1 of 66, 2nd of January, Line: 25, Dwelling/Family: 3/7).  They are living at 200 South ?? Street.  John is sixty-eight years old and owns the house with a mortgage.  He is keeping a hotel.  Ella is fifty years old.  She is a cook of the hotel.  Loyd W. is twenty-five years old and a works for the lumber company.  James C Blake is twenty-two years old and a bookkeeper for the elevator company.  Ruby M. Blake is seventeen years old and a stenographer for the railroad.  Folsom R is indexed as Folson and fifteen years old.  He is a messenger boy for the telegraph.  David D. is nine years old.  J. H. Blake is six years old. All were born in Texas.

By the 1930 census, John has died and Ella is listed as Ellaree N. Blake and is the proprietor of a rooming house at 618 East 2nd Street in Amarillo, Potter County, Texas (Roll: 2384, Page: 121A, Sheet: 17A, ED: 16, Image: 33 of 65, 14th of April, Line: 20, Dwelling/Family: 309/395).  Ella owns the house that is valued at $8,000 and a radio.  She and her father were born in Missouri and her mother was born in Texas.  She is sixty years old.  Her son, Damon D. is nineteen years old and born in Texas.  J. H. Jr. is her seventeen year old son. He is a telegraph operator for the steam railroad.  Carl C. Blake and his family are also living with her.  Carl is forty years old and first married at the age of eighteen years old.  He is an agent for insurance.  Nell is Carl's wife and twenty-nine years old.  She was first married at the age of seventeen.  Nell was born in Texas; her father was born in Tennessee; and her mother was born in South Carolina.  They have two children.   Ellen L. Blake is ten years old and Betty is six years old. 

John and Ella ended up in Amarillo, Potter Co. TX and are buried in Llano Cemetery. See John & Ella's graves at findagrave.com. Also, their son Carl C. In the 1930 census, Emma F. Blake is listed as head of household but still married.  Winfield will not die for ten more years so, uncertain as to where he is in the 1930.  Emma along with her daughter and grandson are living at 686 13th Avenue North in Seattle, King County, Washington (Roll: 2497, Page: 243B, Sheet: 8B, ED: 91, Image: 16 of 63, 4th of April, Line: 57, Dwelling/Family: 86/122).  She rents an apartment for $40.00 a month.  Emma is sixty years old and a practical nurse for a private family.  Roma has taken back her maiden name and thirty-four years old.   She is a manager for a music store.  Jay B. Adams is Roma's son and sixteen years old.  He is a stock boy for the news company.

Trout 04 January 1888 in Rockwall County, Texas, daughter of Robert Trout and Sarah McDowell.  She was born 21 April 1868 in Georgia⁸⁵, and died 08 November 1894 in Rockwall County, Texas.  He married (2) Lucy Forrest Hawley 05 January 1896 in Rockwall County, Texas⁸⁶.  She was born 04 December 1875 in Texas⁸⁷, and died 10 July 1962 in Hunt County, Texas.
