Sherman County is in the High Plains region of the northern Panhandle on the Oklahoma border. The county's center lies at approximately 36.28 north latitude and -101.89 west longitude. The county, named for Sidney Sherman, a veteran of the Texas Revolution, was created by the Texas legislature in 1876 and the county government was organized in 1889. Stratford, the county seat, is in the northwestern part of the county eighty miles north of Amarillo at 36.33, -102.07.
