Ronald Wade - Coneal Eli
Merrill Seago, born in Walla Walla, Pickens, Now Oconee, SC, the son of
Benjamin Wharton Seago (1792 ? 1857) and
Sarah Morgan (1784 ? 1857). He
married in 1858 to
Francis J Peteet (1826 ? 1880). Their
children included Eli Merrill Seago (1864 Ala. ? 1935
Collingsworth, Tx.). He and his wife were Charter
members of the First Baptist Church in 1876 in Big Sandy, Upshur,
Texas. During the Civil War
he enlisted as a Captain on and received his Commission in
Company F, 20th Infantry Regiment Georgia on 18 Jun 1861.
Promoted to Full Major on 29 May 1863. Promoted to Full
Lieutenant Colonel on 2 Jul 1863. An archive of letters between
Col. Seago and Ga. Gov. Joseph Brown offering to create a Company
of men for the Confederate Army is maintained in the Ga. State
Archives as "Governor's Incoming Correspondence, Civil War?
Governor Joseph E. Brown of Georgia. Morrow, Georgia: Georgia
State Archives." He was a Veteran of the Mexican American
War as well. Volunteered at Austin Texas as a Private in
Captain John J. Grumbles' Company, at the age of 24. He went to
Texas after his brother died in Matamoras Mexico during the
Mexican War on 6 Sep 1846. Enlisted at Austin TX on 24 Sep 1846
and was discharged on 23 Sep 1847. Texas Archives: Texas Veteran's
in the Mexican War by Charles D. Spurlin page 147 #42. He
bought much of the land around Big Sandy Creek and built the Seago
Box Factory, saw mill, and store which were in existence in 1876. |

1880), born in Ga., the daughter of
Simeon Peteer (1790 ? 1860) and
Matilda Jones (1807 ? 1901). First
she married in 1842 in Meriwether Co., Ga. to
Emanuel Sligh (1807 ? 1856).
Their children included John Solomon Sligh (1843 ? 1903), Simeon
Sligh (1846 ? 1904), Louzan Frances Sligh (1848 ? 1903), Mary
Matilda "Mattie" Sligh (1850 ? 1938), and James M. Sligh (1852 ?
1922). Following Mr. Sligh's death she married in 1858 to Coneal Eli
Merrill Seago (1821-1878). They had a son, Eli
Merrill Seago (1864 ? 1935). |

Allen Newton Waddell Smith, born in Laurel, Miss., the son of Maggie Ferguson. He married
in 1878 in Quitman, Clarke Co., Miss. to
Harriet Lucretia "Lou" Terral (1852-1927) and their children
included Leonidus Smith born 1879, Cecil H. Smith born about 1881,
Allene T. Smith born about 1889. He was a School
Superintendent. On 7 Apr 1862 at age 14 he enlisted in the
Confederate Army saying he was 18. He enlisted in Capt. Thomas
Bonner's 10th Texas Brigade in Cherokee County and served until
the war's end in 1865. |

Beverly Lafayette Smith, born in
Washington Co., Ark., the son of Burton Smith (born about 1811
Tenn.) and Susan Smith (born about
1818 Tennessee). In 1875 he moved to Big Sandy, Upshur Co.,
Texas according to his Confederate Pension application. He
married in 1863 in Ark. to Emily J. Smith (1846-1932) and their
children included
Lucy M. Smith (1877-1954 Upshur
Co., Tx. who was Lucy Smith Mack living in Big Sandy, Tx. in
1941.) During the Civil War he enlisted Apr 1861 in Co. A,
Adair's Arkansas Cherokee Cavalry Regiment as a Private for the
Quartermaster. He was discharged Apr 5 1865 in Indian
Territory in Oklahoma while with Gen. Cooper's Army. He
received a Confederate Soldier Pension #27363. A Confederate
headstone was applied for by his daughter and received but could
not be located on last survey. He was a Machinist in the
1880 census. |
