Davis Home - This house in Gilmer was built by Horace Vernon Davis,
Mayor of Gilmer for 3 or 4 terms, at the intersection of Butler
and Trinity Streets. Was sold to his brother, Henry Lee Davis
b. 1896, owner of Davis Dry Goods, Maberry Grocery, and
Gilmer Wholesale Grocery for 70 yrs. Henry Lee and Violet
Davis lived in this house when their two sons were born, i.e.:
Richard b.1924 and Thomas b. 1929. Housing in the area was
so scarce during the Kilgore oil boom that part of the house was
renovated to accommodate boarders working in Kilgore. Boarders
could also stay in the garage apartment behind the house.
This picture is not dated; however, the snow and icicles should
be a clue! Thanks to Jeanne
Truly Davis for this wonderful picture. |

Essex School Commencement Programs - 1896-1897 commencement program
for elementary students at the Essex School. F.L. McKinney, Principal;
Hattie Willard, Assistant; Directors: B. Davis, W.R. Arrington,
? Still. On the cover page it gives the name of the school
and the year. It was on land about 1 to 2 miles North of the
Rosewood Community. The lettering is a true medium green, on heavy
paper, almost like cardboard....but yet smooth......and the edges
of the paper are embossed.....easily felt on the original.
Note the hole in the upper left hand corner.....the 3 pages are
threaded together with a cord through those holes. The actual
size is about 3 to 3.5" by 6". Thanks to Sheila
Pool for letting us display this wonderful treasure. NOTE: This school was gone many years before the Rosewood school was built. |

Gilmer High School - Ca 1951 - Gilmer High School about 1951 when
it first opened as a "one-hall school". After the remodeling
in the mid-80s, the covered walk by the classroom windows you see
in this picture was removed. The windows were filled in with concrete
block in most cases, and the walk became what is now the first hall,
the original hall is the second, and a third hallway leads to classrooms,
the library and the cafeteria. The big structure to the right was
the auditorium, and is now the band hall. The large structure to
the left was and is a gymnasium. Thanks to Mary Kirby for this information. |
