Comments: Albert Henry Dudney's ancestors in the United States lived in Maryland, North Carolina, Georgia,and Texas. He worked as a coal miner, a railroad worker, and a farmer. He was lean, small in stature; and though he had no formal education, he could "cipher". He loved Prince Albert tobacco which often could be traced from room to room. It was not uncommon for his pipe to set his pockets on fire. His grandson who enjoyed fishing with him relates this story: "If you are from East Texas the trotline may be substituted for throw lines, jug lines or sethooks, (short heavy lines on hand cut willow poles set into the bank of a creek). If you were with Grandpa Dudney
you first had to go seine your bait, preferably hand size live perch to put on the lines then camp out on the creek bank under a mule drawn wagon. You had to get up about ever two hours and run the sethooks (check for catfish on the lines) go back to the camp and drink coffee made in a syrup bucket over the fire. No filters, but he did lay a small green limb across the bucket to keep it from boiling over. I didn't much like having to strain the grounds through my teeth, having millions of red
bugs (chiggers) covering my body, going without sleep at such a young age or wading muddy water up to my chest seining bait; but I was told it was enjoyable. The pay off was several large Opelousas or yellow cats (flathead catfish) and a community fish fry when we returned back to
Grandpa's house. Also Grandma's home made light bread yeast rolls baked in a wood cook stove with fresh churned butter and dewberry jelly weren't bad either."
