10 and 12 years respectively, have been found, the younger
one dead, with bullet-holes through the head and breast, the
other in a pool of water, shot through the shoulder and arm,
but still alive."

Died on American SoilEagle Pass, Tex., March 10. - Mr. Calvin Bowles, a young man,
well-known on the frontier, was brought across the bridge
from Mexico to the United States yesterday while breathing
his last. He had been sick for some weeks and yesterday the
attending physician informed him that he had but a few
moments to live. He desired to be interred in his native
land, and as the shipment of a body out of Mexico is attended
with great delay and expense, he was tenderly carried across
the bridge while yet living, only to die as he touched
American soil. The body was shipped to his home in Uvalde.

5 April 1900 Dallas Morning News, p. 8Uvalde, Tex., April 4. - News has just reached town of the
finding of the dead body of J. A. Rogers, a well known
citizen of this place, about six miles below here. He died
from natural causes. Officers have gone to the scene and the
body will be brought in tonight.

Killed by LightningUvalde, Tex., July 24. - Douglas Bratton, about 21 or 22 years old, was
killed by lightning yesterday evening at the new asphalt mine, in this
county. The young man was employed by Dan Bogard to drive a team.
Three of the mules he was driving were also killed. Young Bratton
formerly lived at Gonzales. His mother was notified by wire.

4 January 1905 Dallas Morning News, p. 9COMFORT - Hillsboro, Tex., Jan. 2. - A. L. Smith received a
message from Uvalde today that Mrs. E. W. Comfort died there
at 7 a.m. She will be brought here in the morning for
burial. She went to Uvalde several months ago for her health.

Uvalde Banker DeadSan Antonio, Tex., Jan. 19. - Col. Simpson, aged about 70
years, died this morning. Deceased lived in Uvalde where he
was prominent. He was owner of the bank, waterworks system
and was a big stockman at that place. He is survived by a
wife and three children. Remains were sent to Uvalde for
interment.

Tailor Kills HimselfUvalde, Tex., March 23. - Mr. Gretzner, a tailor by trade,
shot and killed himself this morning. He left a letter
saying a tailoring company of San Antonio would pay his
burial expenses.

19 October 1906 Dallas Morning News, p. 14WARD - Taylor, Tex., Oct. 17. - A telephone message from
Uvalde announces the sudden death at his home there of James
Ward, a former citizen of Taylor, who fell dead there
yesterday from a stroke of paralysis. The deceased was a
brother of Mrs. R. H. Talley of Taylor, Mrs. J. T. Dalton of
Uvalde and John Ward of Waco.

Woman District ClerkSan Antonio, Tex., Nov. 17. - Official returns from Uvalde
show that Miss Zena Dalrymple was elected County and
District Clerk of that county. She was the Democratic
nominee and was opposed by Jake Milligan. Miss Dalrymple
will be the only woman ever elected to office in this State
by the qualified voters at a general election.

11 March 1909 Dallas Morning News, p. 13San Antonio, Tex., March 10. - Thevino Martinez, a well-
known ranchman of Uvalde County, was found dead today with
his head crushed and his body badly bruised. Martinez has
been missing from home since Saturday, and his body was
found accidentally in a pile of brush, which looked as if an
attempt had been made to burn the brush and cremate the
body. The police are investigating the matter. He formerly
lived in this city and was well-known here.

17 September 1912 Dallas Morning News, p. 9Uvalde, Tex., Sept. 16 - Morton Barnard was shot through the
breast by a night watchman here and is in very critical
condition. Moser claims his pistol went off accidentally.

Mrs. J. M. Wallis Obituary Click to see a copy of the obituary
On April 5, 1930, at 8:45 P. M.
there passed from this life into that
great beyond the soul of Mrs. J. M.
Wallis. Mrs. Wallis was before her
marriage, Miss Annie Robinson. She
was married early in life to James
M. Wallis who preceded her in death
about 1910. To this union was born
six children. Three girls and three
boys. Two sons, Virgil Wallis of
Rock Springs and W. A. Wallis of
Utopia, and several grand-children
survive. Mrs. Wallis was born in
Guinett county, Georgia, April 5,
1853, being 77 years of age the day
of her death. She came to Texas 36
years ago. Being of sturdy pioneer
stock she remained in West Texas
the closing years of her life. She
resided at Utopia since 1906. Mrs.
Wallis was a loyal wife and devoted
mother. In her death the family have
sustained a great loss. She possessed
that hospitality characteristic of the
southern home, and no friend or
stranger was unwelcome at her home.
She was a member of Utopia lodge
Order of Eastern Star. Funeral serv-
ices were conducted at the grave by
the Rev. J. C. Gibbons, pastor of the
Methodist church, assisted by the
Rev. J. R. Hilleman, pastor of the
Baptist church and by the Order of
the Eastern Star. The large crowd
present attested to the high esteem in
which she was held. The community
extends sympathy to the bereaved in
their sorrow.
