John Asbury Fain and his wife, Caladonia Fain are in the 1860 Young County census. John was 29 years old and born in Georgia about 1839. His wife, Caladonia Fain was 22 years old and was born in Tennessee about 1838. Living in their home was the Belknap school teacher, John H. Cochran as well as census enumerator in 1860. John Fain was a clerk in one of the Belknap stores. By 1863, John Fain was Senior Deacon of the Phoenix Masonic Lodge in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas. In the 1870 census, John Fain and his family were in Parker County, Texas possibly due to the hostilies in Young County on the frontier. The census shows J.A. Fain was 39 years old and working in the Exchange Banking business. His wife is Elizabeth P. Fain who is 39 years old and born in Kentucky about 1831. She is keeping house. Children living in this household are: Elizabeth Davis who is 15 years old and born in Louisiana. Helia H. Davis who is 13 years old and born in Louisiana. William H. Davis who is 11 years old and born in Louisiana. Charles M. Fain who is four years old and born in Texas. Leila P. Fain who is two years old and born in Texas. An adult, Jesse F.Evans is also living in the household. He is 22 years old and born in Tennessee. Mr. Evans is a school teacher in Parker County. From the census, an observation can be made that Caladonia Fain dies between 1860 and 1864, probably in Parker County, Texas. John A. Fain married Mrs. Elizabeth Peyton Hart Davis on 22 May 1865 in Louisiana. By 1871, John A. Fain becomes a partner with James Robertson "J.R." Couts and gave the name of their new firm as Couts and Fain Bank. The first bank was located on the Weatherford Courthouse Square. The bank was nationalized in 1882 under the name of The Citizens National Bank. A two story stone building was completed on the corner of the Courthouse Square and North Main Street in 1885. In the 1880 census, John Fain and family are living in Precinct 1, Denton, Denton County, Texas. John A. Fain is a dry goods merchant who is 49 years old. His wife, Elizabeth P. Fain is 49 years old and keeping house. There were four children living in the home: Charles M. Fain, 14 years, son, farm laborer Lula P. Fain, 12 years, daughter John Asbury Fain, [II], 9 years, son Mary E. Fain, 6 years, daughter William H. Davis, 21 years, step-son, herding stock Harriett G. Hart, 34 years, sister, teaching school Harriett E. Barton, 21 years, boarding, In that same census, living next door to the John A. Fain family. Eudoras L. Fain. He was 27 years old and born in Alabama. He was a dry goods merchant. HIs wife, Mattie E. Fain was 27 years old and born in Texas. Their children were: Lola F. Fain, 3 years, daughter, born Texas Eudoras L. Fain, born Sept 1879, 9/12 months, step-son, born Texas Eudoras Leonidas Fain was born about 1852 in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas. He married Mattie in Denton County, Texas. Eudoras died in 1931 at Lakeland, Florida. Eudoras L. Fain was the son of Abraham Fain and Mary Ann Cole. He was a half-brother of John Asbury Fain. There was Emmett C. Fain, a 22 year old boarder living in the home of Howard W. Shelton. Emmett was a clerk in a dry goods store having been born in Texas. His parents were born in Georgia. Emmett Curon Fain was born 14 November 1858 in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas. He died 16 June 1948 in Weatherford, Texas. He married Mary Frances Melugen in 1883 at Weatherford, Texas. Emmett Curon Fain was the son of Abraham Fain and Mary Ann Cole. He was the half-brother of John Asbury Fain and the youngest child of the family. In the 1900 Parker County census, John A. Fain is living with his wife, Elizabeth. John A. Fain, born January 1830 in Georiga, 70 years old and married 45 years. He is a merchant at this time. John's parents were born in Georiga. Elizabeth Peyton Fain, his wife, was born Aug 1830 in Kentucky, 70 years old and married 45 years. She indicates that she has no children which conflicts with the 1870 Parker County, Texas census. Her father was born in Georgia and her mother in Kentucky. Charles and John Fain are living in Parker county in 1900. By 1910 Coleman County Texas Census, John A. Fain's son, Charles Marvin Fain was living in Precinct 4 with his family. Charles Fain is 44 years old and was born in Texas. He had married Lizzie W. Fain in about 1902. Lizzie was born in Texas and had three children: William Hart Fain, son, 6 years, born Texas John Asbury Fain [III], son, 4 years, born Texas Elizabeth Peyton Fain, 2 years, born Texas Charles Marvin Fain graduated from Southwestern University at Georgetown, Texas. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. In 1888, he was a merchant at Coleman, Texas. Charles was born 15 March 1866 at Weatherford, Parker County, Texas. Charles married Elizabeth Wood. He died 16 April 1916 at Abilene, Taylor County, Texas. A sister, Leila Peyton Fain was born 12 April 1868 in Parker County, Texas. In the 1920 Auburn City, California census. Lelia Peyton Fain is married to Abram B. Reading. They have one child, Abram B. Reading, Jr. A brother, John Asbury Fain was born 15 August 1870 in Parker County, Texas. He was a graduate of Southwestern University at Georgetown, Texas. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. In 1892, John Fain was a lawyer in Lawton, Oklahoma. In the 1910 Lawton Oklahoma census, John A. Fain is the Lawton County attorney. He is living with his wife, Alecede J. Fain and children. John A. Fain is 40 years old and has been married 15 years. His wife is 38 years and the mother of two children. John Fain, son, 11 years, born Texas Charles Leslie Fain, son, 3 years, born Oklahoma Jessie M. Fain, cousin, 21 years, born Texas A sister, Mary Ellen Fain was born 9 July 1873 at Parker County, Texas. Their father, John Asbury Fain was born 21 January 1830 in Bibb County, Georgia. He died 13 March 1908 in Coleman County, Texas. John A. Fain was the son of Abraham Fain and Mary Bell. His first wife, Caledonia Fain died in 1863 or his second wife, Elizabeth Peyton Hart Davis Fain died in 1904. |
