Dr. Asbury V. Ginn

Dr. Asbury V. Ginn served in the Civil War, Company B, 8th Alabama Infantry. He enlisted as a private on 13 May 1861 and was made 1st Sergeant in September of 1883.

Dr. Ginn was married to Sarah Caroline Traylor. She was born 3 March 1844 and died 22 January 1902 at Guthrie, Texas. Sarah was the daughter of Robert Traylor and Cynthia Colquitt. The Colquitts were from Savanah and one became Governor of Texas on 17 January 1911.

Dr. Asbury Van Buren Ginn came to Young County to practice medicine beginning 16 October 1879.

In 1879, he practiced also in Throckmorton County as well. His family have an 1879 hand written receipt for $5 from the Sheriff of Throckmorton County who was the collector of taxes granting him the right to practice medicine in Throckmorton County for one year.

He moved to Jack County living in the Sparks Springs community after serving as a physician in Young County. Family stories say that he was on a trip to Lubbock to sell a herd of half-Merino sheep which he kept in addition to his medical practice.

"His wife, Sarah Caroline Ginn, called to his son, Tolbert Tombs Ginn, to put some wood on the fire and to get dressed. They continued to wait but he did not arrive. He was found sometime later, dead, beside the road. His hired hand who had accompanied him on the trip was missing as were the proceeds from the sale of the sheep" The 15 May 1884, Rural Citizen newspaper explains that "Dr. A.V. Ginn died last Friday on Willow Creek, four miles beyond Weatherford." The crime is still unsolved.

Dr. Ginn was buried in Parker county, Texas. Sarah Caroline, his wife, gave a deposition in Jack County that her husband died 11 May 1881, Parker County, Texas.

Sarah Ginn became a post mistress at Keechi, Jack County. Texas. She served in that capacity from 19 December 1896 to 31 May 1900 when the mail service was sent to Jacksboro. Their son, Tolbert Ginn went to work on Burk Burnett's 6666 ranch in King County. Tolbert worked for the ranch 14 years. Tolbert was born 12 August 1868 at Smith County, Texas and died 28 October 1937 in Aspermont, Stonewall County, Texas. He was married to Mary Irene Simpson. Mary was born 8 January 1875 in Dewitt County, Texas. She was the daugther of Robert A. Simpson and Lou Dickinson. Mary died on 21 March 1961 in Rotan, Texas.

Their daughter, Emma C. Ginn married Robert Ray. Tolbert's son, Asbury Burnett Ginn was born and raised in Stonewall County, Texas. He married Ruth Mary Stiffler and they moved to California in 1938. Asbury died in 1985 as did his wife, Ruth.
