Huffstuttle Community

The Huffstuttle Community was located at the intersection of FM 578 and FM 1974 in the extreme southwest corner of Young County. It was six miles south of Murray, west of Eliasville and southeast of Woodson, Texas.

Huffstuttle was named for an early settler in the area. In addition to a cemetery, for a time this was the location of a one roomed school which later consolidated into the Woodson schools.

The school was located in the Nancy Morris Survey, A-1735, and ajoined the southeast corner of the Texas Emigration & Land Company Survey, A-854, five miles south of Murray. County records show the first school was No. 11 and called "Hole in Rock" School which organized on 1 August 1883 in the community. The first trustees were Posey Otts, John Herrington and J.W. Jones.

From my personal research, I find the following pioneer families lived in the Huffstuttle community: Baker, Beaty, Beckham, Bennett, Box, Campbell, Coon, Daniel, Duckworth, Fawks, Fisher, Foster, Hardin, Harty, Long, Stewart, Taylor, Martin, McCall, McCready, Moreland, Needham, Otts, Peacock, Pratt, Reger, Riggers, Thompson, Wade, Wood and Wade.

A large oak tree on the Gill Wood's place had a shade of 110 feet in circumference.

Nothing remains of this community except a cemetery and the last school building both located on private property. Oh, there's also a lot of memories.
