Orth, Texas

Orth is located on FM 3329, five miles south of Olney. J.A. Kemp of the Wichita Falls & Southern railway founded the town in 1908. Young County land records show a plat for January 19, 1909 when it was a train stop for the railroad. Orth was named for T.R.T. Orth, vice-present of the railroad. Records show the post office opened in Orth by 1908 in William VanZandt's mercantile store. Other stores in the town were: John Lowe's drug store, J.T. Routon's mercantile, two gins, and a medical doctor.

In 1910, the Baptist Church and First Christian church were established and built buildings. Orth had a substantial three room school house built in 1915 identified as School # 56. In 1931, Orth consolidated with the Olney schools. Shallow oil wells were drilled in the area by 1924, many being only 300-500 feet deep.

Families in the area include: Smedley, Gibbs, Bailey, Andrew, Jeffery and Routon.

A cemetery remains in the Orth community.

My dad, James A. Gibbs is in the front row fatherest to the right. Next to him is R.G. Daniel. On the back row, the fourth girl from the left is Lucille Gibbs, James' sister. The teacher was Mr. Lowe.
