UPDATE:  Complete reading with photos November 2008 by Geraldine Little Braswell & Sandy Spann.
Read by W M Kellam and Dorothy Copeland  1997 & 1998 avd submitted by the Upshur County Historical Commission.
Thanks to Nancy Adams  and Tom Mitchell for sending in their pictures.

As hard as we all try, we are human and sometimes when reading a cemetery we miss a grave covered with leaves, fireants, or bushes. Sometimes the headstone has sunk and is mostly underground. Our area also has many graves only marked with iron ore rocks and even many unmarked graves. There are headstones that have long ago been destroyed by the elements or even vandalizm, and are hard to impossible to read the details. We would appreciate it if you would let us know if you did not find your relative which was buried here, and would appreciate your letting us use the information you know about them. With the combined efforts of us all, we can make the Upshur County website bigger and better.

Per Ronald Wade - George Buckner Swann - Born in SC.  He married Martha Sophia Menla Davis (1834-1943) and their children included Jane Swann born about 1867, George Neville Swann born about 1870, Florence Vane Swann born about 1872, Rose Bud Swann, Percival Reginald Swann born 1880.  On 15 Nov 1894 they were "legally" married and apparently had never been legally married before according to information in her confederate widow's pension application.  They had additional children, George B. Swann born about 1896 Menla Jane Swann, b. 27 December 1897 and John T. Swann born about 1899.    Mr. Swan enlisted 11 Nov 1861 in Bainbridge, Ga. into the Confederate Army and was a Sergeant in Co. I, 31st Georgia Infantry.  He was discharged in Richmond, Virginia 7 Jul 1862 due to disability.  After "several large battles in the 7 day fight" he suffered what might be called a mental breakdown which led to physical problems the remainder of his life.   His military papers describe him as 6 foot 2 inches ion height, of fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, and his occupation as a Planter.
