William K. Arnold was born 23 November 1824 and moved to the Burnet County Texas area in about 1850 with his wife Sophie, and his father and stepmother, Elijah Arnold and Cynthia Duff. William built a home on the West side of the Colorado River that is now under about 37 feet of the Buchanan Lake waters. It was located about two miles northwest of the dam, and not far from the current Black Rock Park area. W. K. Arnold began raising herds of cattle numbering over 5,000 head. In 1871, he began making drives with cattle up the trail to Dodge City, Kansas, where he put them on the train and shipped them to Kansas City, Kansas. He made another drive in 1873 and two later drives. These drives went north through Vernon, Texas across the Red River through Altus, Oklahoma community and north through the Port, Oklahoma community and on north to Dodge City. Some of these drives took six months for a round trip. The papers required for these drives are now in possession of S. H. Arnold of Cordell. William died 18 October 1884. His grave was moved to the New Bluffton Cemetery in about 1931, before they started flooding the area with the lake waters. William's father and stepmother's (Elijah and Cynthia) graves were moved from Burnet to be buried in the same plot at the same time. Descendants of this Arnold family have started holding their Arnold Family Reunion in Burnet, Texas in June of each year. Burnet is a beautiful area and our family roots were well established there. |
