"...Captain Jesse Burnam was commissioned to gather and equip men for service in the army, ...under the command of General Sam Houston." * He also served for two years in a group helping to prepare and sustain the struggle with Mexico.

He moved to Burnet County in the 1850s where he established a large wheat farm and was the first to run sheep in the county.

He first married Temperance, with whom he had nine children. His second wife, Nancy Cummings Ross, bore him seven children.
