The
Indians. Major Marshall, Austin, Texas:
Dear Sir--I send you a brief statement of the facts in regard to the killing of the Rev. Mr. Dancer, by the Indians on Monday last. The deceased resided about 25 miles S. W. of this place, in Llano county, frequently preached here, and was quite an acceptable preacher in the Methodist church. On Monday last he and his neighbors had agreed to meet and went out a road from their neighborhood to the new town of Llano. Early in the morning Mr. D. left home, leaving directions with his wife to tell his neighbors that he had gone toa designed place to commence work--the neighbors came to his house, Mrs. Dancer told them where her husband had gone to work, they immediately went to the designated spot, but did not find hem there. After remaining there some time and calling Mr. D., they returned home. Mr. D. did not return home on Monday night; on tuesday morning Mrs. D. being uneasy about the absent of her husband sent to her neighbors and got them to go in search for him--they went, and soon found his dead body, literally riddled with arrow shots! The same day Mr. Gallagher was shot and dangerously wounded by the Indians, though I learn he will probably recover. Mr. G. lives in the same neighborhood where the Rev. Mr. Dancer was killed. About twenty-five Indians were seen by others the same day driving some 30 or 40 head of horses. How much longer must our bleeding frontier suffer these fiendish forays? Respectfully, THOMAS MOORE |
