Gypsie Rea Mitcheltree Thompson

Gypsie Rea Thompson, 86, formerly of Buda, died of natural causes Tuesday, January 13, 2004 in Georgetown where she had resided for the last 16 months with her daughter and son-in-law, Karry and Roger Matson.

She was born March 15, 1917 in Burnet to Andrew and Coosa Mae Mitcheltree. Her family lived in the Luling and Prairie Lea area where she completed 11th grade at Luling High School in 1934.

She married Jalett Conner of Prairie Lea in 1934 and had two children, Connie and Toby. Jalett served in the U.S. Navy as a chief petty officer aboard the USS Ommaney Bay and was killed when his ship was hit by a kamikaze plane in the Leyte Gulf. In 1946, she married J. D. Thompson, a Silver Star recipient and a Pearl harbor survivor. They had four children: Judy, Karry Kay, Putt and Clay.

She is survived by her children Connie Armbruster of Brackettville, Toby Conner and wife Maureen of Schertz, Judy Powell of Austin, Karry Kay Matson and husband Roger of Georgetown, Putt Thompson and wife Jill of Crow Agency, Montana, and Clay Thompson and wife Calise of Bulverde, Texas. She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren.

Gypsie was the last of eight siblings and was also preceded in death by her parents; her former husband; and sons-in-law Ronnie Armbruster and Sammy Powell.

A celebration of life was held at the Buda United Methodist Church on Thursday, January 15, 2004 at 11 a.m.
