William
Carter Dibrell and
his wife, Margaret
Caroline Dibrell
and their
family, came to
Coleman County in 1883,
buying land northeast of
Coleman in the Camp
Colorado area.
They also built a house
in Coleman by 1888 at
114 South Frio Street,
on the lot east of his
son, James Carter
Dibrell. William
Carter Dibrell's son,
Frank Anthony Dibrell
built a house one block
north at 402 West Live Oak Street.
I have not learned which
house was built first.

In 1900, Margaret Caroline
(Jenkins) Dibrell, called "Maggie"
on the 1880 Galveston County, Texas
census, was living at 114 South Frio
Street, which would later become 402
West Live Oak Street. Her
niece, Nannie Jenkins (daughter of
Margaret's brother, James F.
Jenkins) was living with her.
Margaret's husband, William Carter
"W. C." Dibrell had died in
1898. In 1910 census, Margaret
was still at this location, and both
Nannie and her father, James F.
Jenkins, were living her.
Nannie had been living with her aunt
Margaret, probably from soon after
her birth, as she is shown living
with them at age 4 on the 1880
Galveston County, Texas census, as
Nannie Dibrell, daughter.
The Dibrell's owned Block
12, and much of the block north of
it. Margaret died in
1918. On the 1920 census, the
dwelling at 114 South Frio Street is
addressed on Pecan Street, as it
faced Pecan Street on the
south. Living at this
dwelling, in addition to Nannie
Jenkins, who owned the house, was George
Critz and his wife Ella, who
were renting, and were in their 70s
at the time. He was a retired
attorney. Margaret's niece, Nannie
Jenkins was still living at 114
South Frio Street on the 1930
census, lived in houses at 102
South Frio Streeton the
1930 census and 112
South Frio Street at various
times. Margaret's
granddaughter, Lotta and her
husband, Harry Wooldridge lived to
the west at 408
West Live Oak Street, next
door to her parents, Frank and Mary
Dibrell. Her grandson, Harry
Dibrell lived in the block east of
her house at 112
North Frio Street in
1929. Margaret Dibrell died in
1918.
Nannie
Jenkins was living at 114 South Frio
Street on the 1930 census, and at 102 South Frio
Street on the 1940 census. Both of
these censuses show that she owned both of
these homes. She must have inherited her
aunt's house, but later moved to the smaller
house at 102 South Frio Street.
After Nannie
had moved to 102 South Frio Street, which
the article I wrote below in 2016, the
locals knew it as the Nannie Jenkins home,
since she had lived there for over 40 years.

"In 1929, Miss Nannie Jenkins
was residing at 114 South Frio Street. She was
the owner of this dwelling. Also residing at this
address were Thomas W. Martin, and his wife
Jessie. He was a bookkeeper at
the Nehi Bottling Company.
Mrs. Jessie Martin, a teacher at South Ward
School." (Coleman
City Directory, 1929 - Hudspeth.)
114 South Frio Street showing the south (West
Pecan Street) side of the dwelling in
1947. It had been bricked
between 1930 and 1948.
It was purchased by Joe Stevens and was torn
down in 1955 to make way for the new Stevens
Funeral home, which faced south. The new
address was 400
West Pecan Street.

sides of 412 South Frio Street at the right
The 1948 map shows houses built at
106 South Frio Street, 106 1/2 South Frio
Street, 114 1/2 South Frio Street and 114
1/3 South Frio
Street between 1930 and 1948. They
were probably removed when Stevens
Funeral Home was built in 1955.
None of these addresses are shown in the
1962 Polk City Directory of Coleman, but
112 South Frio Street is shown
in this directory as vacant. 112
is probably the same as 114 1/3 on the
1948 map. This small brick
dwelling is now part of the Stevens
Funeral Home property. These
dwellings have been removed to make
room for Stevens Funeral Home vehicles
and parking lot.
