Saints
Chapel
Red River County
Saints Chapel Cemetery,
31 Oct 1889,"This cemetery is located in the northwest quadrant
of Red River County, Texas. GPS COORDINATES: Datum WGS84: 33
Deg 48.814N, 95 Deg 10.354W. This cemetery was started by a splinter
group that had broken off from the church based in Salt Lake
City, Utah. As of 1999 there have finally been records found
by the LDS concerning this old church and burying ground in the
turn of the century era. This burying ground is located on my
old family land. From deed records which were never filed, William
Malachi Coble and wife gave an acre of ground to the Latter Day
Saints (Mormons) for a church and burying ground. There was a
stipulation that the land revert to the previous owners if and
when the church no longer existed. This cemetery is located 1.8
miles south of Manchester on CR 2235 which goes to Bagwell, (the
old Bagwell road). It is very badly overgrown and difficult to
spot even though it is directly off the road to the west. There
are over 50 burials here but the vast majority are unmarked and
in the edge of a pasture. The oldest marked burial is that of
James T. Gregory who died on 31 Oct 1889. This cemetery was surveyed
by Lawrence and Sue Dale on 19 Feb 1999. As of 8 Jan 2004 there
needs to be a cleanup day on this old cemetery. While we were
there we took the GPS coordinates and rechecked for any marker
changes."
