1900-1909

The year 1900 was the high point in the economic and social history of Clarksville and Red River County. The development which had gone on without pause since 1850 reached its peak then. A record-breaking crop of cotton was made and what was considered then a very satisfactory price was received.

All the money derived from the record crop was spent with local merchants and much trade was received from all over Southern Oklahoma and from Titus and Franklin Counties. Clarksville became noted the world over as a long-staple cotton market and was the only market in the county.

Our stores and saloons were well patronized by people from a radius of one hundred miles.

Five large wagon yards were constantly full of wagons from what were then great distances.

It was impossible for Clarksville people to trade anywhere else and local merchants were able to stock anything wanted or needed.

If there ever was a "Golden Age" for Clarksville and Red River County, when everything was lovely, it was the year 1900.

After 1900 things began to happen. Cotton prices went down to some extent and smaller crops
