Gay-Hagan Cemetery

This cemetery is located on the Gregg Co.-Upshur Co. line on N. Phillips Springs Rd, 4/10 of a mile E. of East Lake Dr. and 1 9/10 miles N. & W. from Gay Ave in Gladewater, TX. The cemetery is in very poor condition, no longer being maintained and has not been used for some time. Vandalism in the 1970's and 1980's has left it's mark, with several stones taken from the cemetery, some stones broken, and some graves actually disturbed. There are lots of graves marked with only native stones and others with just funeral home markers. UPDATE: 2010 - The road leading to the cemetery has been cleared by the county and much of the brush in the cemetery area has been cleared by the City of Gladewater.

UPDATE: You will find this to be a combination of three readings.

The first reading was done February 11, 1990 by Ryan and Thomas Coker for Ryan's Eagle Scout project. Thank you Ryan for allowing us to use your information on the Gregg County, TX GenWeb Project!  We have also had 2 other readings submitted to us.....each has a few different names than the other. Over time, with vandalizm and erosion of the stones, some stones were lost, accounting for the difference in the readings. What you will find here is a compilation of all three readings.

It was read again in March, 2001 by Sharon Pierce, Randy Pierce, and Eddie Phillips.
Thanks to Gayla Edwards Hart for sending in her recent pictures!

This cemetery is in very sad shape.  There are broken headstones, and headstones that have dissappeared since Ryan Coker read this cemetery in the early 1990's. Some of the earliest settlers of Gladewater were buried in this cemetery.

A Texas Medallion, due to the efforts of John Ben Shepperd, once graced this cemetery, dedicated to Elvey Shepperd.   The first one was stolen, it was then replaced, and the second one was stolen also. The police recovered the medallion and returned it to John Ben Shepperd in the early to mid 1980's.  It now resides at the John Ben Shepperd Cemetery.

It reads:  "Pioneer Mother Elvey Shepped 1779-1860 born in South Carolina, daughter of Elijah Anderson, a soldier of the American Revolution and Elvina Brack.  Married William Shepperd in Georgia on 1-22-1802.  Husband died 1828 in Alabama.  Led her family to Texas in 1845 where, with help of sons and slaves, she built one of the first log cabins in this area---a log cabin which stood for over 100 years."

Thanks go to Alan Shepperd for this information from his private files!  In Gay-Hagan Cem., a ? Shepperd (Broken) marker could be that of J. William Shepperd who was 1st born son of Alfred F (Fulton) Shepperd & Florence E (Elverse) Hardin Shepperd. Dates in my records are b.1845 d.?. Benjamin A. was 4th s/o Gemmette Shepperd (s/o Alfred F.) & Mildred O. Bozman Shepperd. Mildred was the d/o Benjamin Medea Bozman. Benjamin was a surveyor who came to Texas in 1839. He was 1st married to Mariah Phillips, d/o George Phillips and Elizabeth Talley and 2nd to Frances Brown, d/o Hitson Brown & Winifred Ray. Winifred was sister of Gabriel Ray.
