821 Ga Militia CSA; Picture; Per Ronald Wade
- Joseph Berry Wade was born in Pendleton District, South Carolina, the
son of Telitha Wade. He traveled with his mother and two brothers,
David Alexander Wade and John Lawrence M. Wade from SC to Auraria,
Lumpkin County, Georgia to seek gold during the Gold Rush (the nation's
first) about 1838. He married Sarah Medely Odell on 6 Feb 1839 in
Auraria and they had nine children. A daughter, Emily was born in
Alabama in 1842 so one can only surmise that they had relatives there
and went for a visit or lived there a short time between census periods.
An 1846 deed shows Joseph as one of 3 trustees of the Auraria Episcopal
Methodist Church. An 1855 tax document shows he owned 2 acres of land
in Lumpkin County. Joseph had asthma but served in the 821 Georgia
Militia & Confederate Army "Home Guard" for Lumpkin Co., Ga during
the Civil War. By 1864 a tax document shows he suffered also from
deafness as a result of his war service. His son Whitfield told his
grandson Harvey S. Wade that he and his Dad, Joseph, slept out on the
cold hills of Georgia for months on end during the Civil War protecting
residents from "hog backs" or deserters and Yankees on the
Tennessee/Georgia border which is a high altitude. In 1869 he sold his
land for $1,000 and moved his family by ox-driven wagon train from
Georgia through Mobile, Alabama and across by flat-bottomed boat and up
the Mississippi River and eventually landed in Jefferson, Texas and on
to Kaufman County, Texas and finally Upshur County, Texas. His first
home in Upshur County was directly across from where there is now the
Little Mound Baptist Church location and just east of the current
community center (1911). |

W/o Joseph B; Per Ronald
Wade - Sarah Medely Odell was born the daughter of
John Prather Odell (1797-1860) and Elizabeth Mullinax Odell (1799-1883).
The Odells are shown still in Pickens, S.C. in the 1830 U.S. Census but
by 6 Mar 1839 Sarah was in Dahlonega, Lumpkin County, Georgia, site of
the first Gold Rush in the United States and the date she married Joseph
Berry Wade (1815-1877) whom she may have known in Pickens and who moved
to Lumpkin County with his family about the same time. The family made
their home a mile north and outside the gold-mining town of Auraria in
Lumpkin County and stayed there until 1869. After the Civil War there
was little to keep the family in Auraria and they made their way by
Ox-drawn wagon to East Texas settling in Upshur County and Kaufman
County. Following the death of her husband, Joseph, she lived with her
daughter Susan Gray in Van Zandt and Kaufman Counties where she died and
is buried in an unmarked grave in Oak Hill Cemetery in Edgewood, Tx.
next to her daughter and son-in-law. This memorial marker for Sarah has
been placed next to Joseph in Upshur County. |

Per Ronald
Wade - Whitfield Anthony Wade, son of Joseph Berry
Wade (1815-1877) and Sarah Medely Odell Wade (1922-1908).
Born in Auraria, Lumpkin Co., Georgia, he worked with his father in
the first Gold Rush in the United States in Lumpkin County.
He moved with his family to Texas in 1870 by ox-drawn wagon and
over flat-bottomed boats from Georgia arriving finally in Jefferson,
Texas and on to Little Mound, Upshur County. He eventually
bought a large farm in Rosewood where he raised his family of 12
children. He married Mirah Elizabeth Knight (1855-1885) 15 Oct
1874 in Upshur County and when she died after being thrown from a
horse after returning from the Rosewood Post Office he married her
sister, Area Addie E. Knight (1863-1929) on 14 Nov 1885). The
Knight sisters were the daughters of Thomas Jefferson Knight
(1827-1892) and Martha Ann Sanders Knight (1832-1880), buried
next to the Wades in the same cemetery. Whitfield, his father
Joseph and father-in-law Thomas J. Knight, were all Confederate
veterans. |
