HOPEWELL CEMETERY
Our thanks go to the Upshur County Historical
Commission for allowing us to use their reading of Hopewell Cemetery. The
reading was done by: Thurman Hearn, Thurman Cagle, Durward Amos,
Finley Tucker, Garland Bullock, and Curtis Hart. It was completed
June 1, 2000. Thanks also go to Lea
Ann Tedford for the use of her partial reading. We have
merged the two to help insure no one was missed. There are many unmarked
graves, and graves marked only with native rocks.
Update: Thanks to Billy L Thompson,
Sue Kennington, and Fendley Tucker, Secretary/Treasurer of the Hopewell
Cemetery, for the recent update. This should make the listing
current through May 24, 2009.
Update: Thanks to Sandra L Spann & Geraldine L Braswell for completely
photographing the cemetery in April of 2008!
Thanks
to Kim Wolff & Sondra Petty Nicholson for the use of their pictures.

Note by
Ron Wade:
"Ola Latch, daughter of old-time Upshur Sheriff, L.A. "Daddy"
Latch for whom the Latch Community was named, was the 1st wife of
my grandfather, Harvey Wade. She died early in their marriage. My
grandfather told me often of the tales Daddy Latch told him of his
days with the Jesse James Gang. He said Mr. Latch said he was
"Old Jack" in the gang. I found a book "Desperate Men" by James
Horan mentioning James Latche verifying old Sheriff Latch's tales.
Seems though he was a "hanger-on" to the gang and led to Jesse's
killing or even assisted in killing Pinkerton Agent John W. Whicher
(see pages 94-97--Latche is recalled at top of page 96). Sheriff
Latch told my grandfather of Jesse coming through Upshur Co. once
and hiding loot in a small cave here. Years later my grandfather
used a map drawn by Daddy Latch and found the cave with a
broken-lid strong box but no treasure! Anyway, the book verifies
"Old Jack" was at least around Jesse James and wanted to be part of
the gang whether he was or not." |
