HOPEWELL CEMETERY
Our thanks go to the Upshur County Historical Commission
for allowing us to use their reading of Hopewell Cemetery. The reading
was done by: Thurman Hearn, Thurman Cagle, Durward Amos, Finley Tucker, Garland
Bullock, and Curtis Hart. It was completed June 1, 2000. Thanks also go to Lea
Ann Tedford for the use of her partial reading. We have merged
the two to help insure no one was missed. There are many unmarked graves,
and graves marked only with native rocks.
Update: Thanks to Billy L Thompson,
Sue Kennington, and Fendley Tucker, Secretary/Treasurer of the Hopewell
Cemetery, for the recent update. This should make the listing
current through May 24, 2009.
Thanks to Sandra L Spann & Geraldine L Braswell for completely
photographing the cemetery in April of 2008!
Thanks
to Kim Wolff & Sondra Petty Nicholson for the use of their pictures.

Photo; Photo couple; DS with Harvey S - Emma Maud Salter Wade - Born
in Mildred, Navarro Co., Tx., the daughter of
George Mercer Salter (1859-1920) and
Mary Lucy Love Salter
(1866-1962). She married
Harvey Surestus Wade at Chatfield, Navarro Co., Tx. on 15
Mar 1918 and died in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., Tx. As
a child her father took his family including Emma by wagon
to West
Texas to farm. She remembered
living in Dickens
County as a child in a soddy or Dug-out like in the photo
shown
here which is an actual photo of one in Dickens County in
the
1800's but not of the Salter's. The Salters went to
Dickens County
to farm. The early homes were called dug-outs. They would
dig into
the side of hill and finish the front part with lumber. I
don?t
think any of the dug-outs were actually sod using bricks
made from
dirt, that was mostly done in New Mexico. The first
settlers would
build their dug-outs and live in them till they could
finish a
regular home. The dug-outs had more protection than wagon
or
camping out. They would be one room with a stove pipe
sticking
out. The stove was used for heating and cooking and they
used cow
chips (manure) as fuel. Submitted by Ron Wade. |
