This cemetery is on FM 2088 about 2 1/2 miles W of Hwy 271, at the
Oak Hill Missionary Baptist Church. On Nov. 4, 1984, Carrie V. Johnson
deeded land to the Baptist Church at Oak Hill and their successors. The
earliest marked grave is Evalena Deen, b. 1870 d. 1870, daughter of J.L.
& M.E. Deen. On April 3, 1985, the Upshur County Oak Hill Cemetery
Association was incorporated as a non-profit, perpetual corporation. The
names of the incorporators are: J.M. Rutledge, Larry Johnson, June Johnson,
William Caldwell, L.E. Fannin, Grady Holmes, and Clyde Stracener.
Update March 2008 - Thanks go to Geraldine Little Braswell & Sandy
Spann for photographing the headstones in Oak Hill and allowing us to
post them online. This should make the cemetery transcription as
complete as possible through March 2008.
This information was compiled in 1997 by Cheyenne
Johnson and James Patterson. An update was done in March of 2000. This
information was kindly donated for our use by the Upshur County Historical
Commission.
Thanks to Nancy
Adams, JoAnn McBride, Jane Eubanks & Geraldine
Little Braswell for the pictures!
Thanks go to Anthony
J. Bacala, Jr. for the picture of the
JW Hackler headstone
